If someone gave you $500 U.S. [alright, i know that's not much for many of you out there :)] on the condition that you had to spend it on tarot and oracle decks, what tarot or oracle decks would you buy?
Edited to add: You need to allocate the money to specific decks now. No gift certificates. :)

First on my list would be the limited edition Gilded Tarot. :)
And then I would purchase the Bosch, the Golden Tarot. I would also purchase the Gothic Tarot by Vargo, and the Madame Endora Fortune cards. Oh, and the Sola Busca. I am not sure with how much money that would leave me with? Around $150? I would save that for later decks that might catch my eye.

The most exquisite Tarot de Marseille, that is so old no one can remember when it was first bought.... and its been in the same family for years..... and has been loved and cherished and shuffled to perfection. And really its worth thousands of $$$ but the seller really wants me to have it so is willing to let it go just for the $500 that Rusty has given me to buy it... for me... mine... all mine!

Ooooh - don't know whether to get my entire wishlist of easy to get, in print decks or to head straight for the 5-Star Salon on Tarotgarden.com.
I think the latter - after all, in-print, $20 decks can be built up slowly and all the time.
I have to own the Rock n Roll Tarot by Chris Paradis. If I have anything left, it goes on Samantha's Tarot.

The first deck I would get is the Dali. I've been wanting one for years.
After that, I'd get a Vertigo for my husband, who is a collector of comics, especially the Sandman series. He loves Dave McKean's work and I think he would be very happy to have the Vertigo tarot.
I'd get a Mantegna for my medievalist sister-in-law (though she might already have it, I'll have to ask her). I'd also get her a Baroque Bohemian Cats. She's such a cat person, I think she would love it.
A BBCats for myself, also. With what money is left over, I'd look for rare or out of print decks and just whatever catches my eye. I don't want a lot of decks for myself, so I might look for ones that I can pass on to appreciative fellow tarot lovers.
Edited to say: I told my husband about this thread ("I thought of you second!" :D) and he was very happy that I would get him a Vertigo with my hypothetical money. ("The one that's out of print? Thank you!")

I'd definitely want a Gilded. Having recently sniffed out Marseilles after "Thirteen" recommended the deck, I'd also have to have one of the most luscious versions of that too.
I'd keep back enough spare change to get me a MacDonald's choccy milkshake (sooo addicted to them!) to sup whilst I sat back and admired my new purchases. (Oh, and a little silk pouch for each deck to sleep in).
That would indeed be a good day.

Well, with $500, I am in line with Centaur and JulieG for that limited Gilded Tarot! And then.....I really like the Tarot 2000-ThePagan Tarot, and wouldn't mind having the Bosch Tarot either. Maybe a Quest Tarot deck and a Radiant Rider-Waite(cuz it's just prettier than the regular) could go home in my shopping bag too. Am I outta $$$$ yet? Can I borrow someone else's $500?

I would agree with popuar concesus and get the Gilded, and then the International Icon Tarot....I would take the remaining money and see if I could get the wheels rolling on the pirate deck I was to make.

Limited edition of the Gilded, yes indeed. Lessee that's $355, right?
A copy of the Greenwood tarot. Let's estimate, $150.
That leaves $95.
A copy of the Norse, though I'll bet $95 wouldn't cover it even if I could find a copy.

That Story of the City of Ferrara Tarot. Is there an original RWS with the box signed by Waite? Or a Thoth signed by Crowley? Those would be, er, actually no, I would be afraid to use them. I'll stick to my first choice, and rest on 'ordinary' prints.

Weeeeeell.......
No question about it.....the limited editon Gilded first....$355.
And if I could get the Folchi Citta di Ferrara (before Happiness does ;) ), for the low price of $145....that would make me very VERY happy!!!! :D:D:D

If I had $500 that I had to spend on a deck, I would see if I could commission Andreas Schroter to do a limited print of the Aquatic Tarot for me.

Limited Edition Gilded...and Rock and Roll...would $500 be enough?
And if there's money left over...Menegazzi's Puppet deck.

I think we are all thinking alike here!
My picks would be the Animal Tarot by Paula Gibby, and the limited edition Gilded Tarot. That would leave me with about $45 which is not enough for the Illuminated. :(
So, I would use it to get a published copy of the Gilded when it comes out in September!

Oh, I would want the original 1927 edition of the Knapp Hall. It went for 500 dollars or so recently, on e-bay.
Aoife's idea is tempting too... an old old old used and worn Tarot of Marseille.

It's coming out in September, now? Did they move the date? I'm not sure I can hold on to my extra shopping spree $$$$ for that long, but I will try :D :D

First, let me clearly point out that the people who frequent this forum seem to be obsessed with buying tarot decks. Case in point - A thread entitled "What decks do you have in your collection" another one called "What decks are on your wish list" and now, THIS!
OK, so, now that I got that out of the way in a pathetic attempt to appear as if I wasn't going to take the bait :D ...
...$500 just isn't enough - it would be easier to list the decks that I don't want ;)

How many are there exactly? I have been looking for a decent cat deck for a while. The only one I know of is the Tarot of the Cat People, but I think the images are too harsh..I mean cats are suppposed to be fluffy and cute.

In addition to the Baroque Bohemian Cats Tarot, there's several others, many of which are listed at TarotGarden. They have a database search here. Select 'Cats' under the entry 'Category/Theme' and hit 'Search', and it'll list them for you :)
The Medieval Cat Tarot is apparently coming out soon - I've just preordered it from Amazon.com. I'll tell you what it's like when I get it :)
I'm also trying to get my paws on the Tarot du Chat. It's a full 78 card deck and it looks very readable; again, if I do get my paws on it, I'll give you a mewl :) Until then, there are reviews at the following links:
http://www.tarotpassages.com/catsedillot.htm
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/du-chat
I have the Tarot for Cats, and it's a lighthearted majors-only deck which works quite well, imo. Some reviews are here:
http://www.tarotpassages.com/cats.htm
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tarot-for-cats/
http://www.wicce.com/davis1.html
http://www.wicce.com/tarotforcats.html
The three black-and-white decks are beautiful but not decks that I would read with; more decks I would look at from time to time and just admire, or frame. (I have one of the three and I've never read with it.) Here are even more reviews:
http://www.wicce.com/gatti.html <-- the 'I Gatti' by O. Menegazzi
http://www.tarotpassages.com/gbuffi.htm <-- the 'I Gatti Buffi' by O. Menegazzi
http://www.tarotpassages.com/gattiopg.htm <-- the 'I Gatti Originali' by Evelyne Nicod
All but the Medieval Cat Tarot are hard to find. Your best bet would be eBay, Amazon, TarotGarden, or alidastore.
Evelyne Nicod has also done a regular playing card deck where the court cards and aces have cats on them in the style of the I Gatti Originali. I have it and it's very cute :)
Hope that helps :)

I'd spend it on anything that caught my eye. Right now I need to save my money but I'm living in the city now and found a hoard of underpriced tarot decks at Hastings. I'm going back today and I'm afraid of what might happen :D

Hi Nycelle,
Does it matter if it is his second edition run, opened, but never shuffled/used/abused and only looked at once? It is signed by him and it's #204 out of 500. The cards are in perfect condition and have been kept in a velvet bag ever since being looked at once. Would this deck fulfill your dream?
Joy to you,
Maralee

I'd probably buy the Limited Edition Gilded and the Large Samantha's Tarot.. That should just about kill the entire $500.. :D
