I can't believe I ate the whole thing....

I came into some money recently, and was very stern and serious and adult with most of it--bought a vaccum that worked, and a new computer and printer, and promised myself 1 new tarot deck......

So far I've bought 10 new decks, and am thinking about what a nice, round number 13 is............

No! NO! BAAAAAD Magpie! Put that deck down!!Right now!! Just back away from the deck............my pretty....

Has anybody else here ever gone this far overbord, or do I hold bragging rights on extreme excess?

And is there a known cure, other than a return to oh-so-familiar poverty??

HELP! HELP! I'M sinkiiiiiiiiiing..........

Well, magpie, you are not all alone. I go through this state every so often, particularly when I find myself splurging on all sorts of goods, including tarot decks, as of late, when I come across some $$$.

This is not all bad, if you attend to the basic or not-so-basic necessities first, and putting some money aside just in case, making sure that you will not go hungry or needy in the near future or by the time your next paycheck comes through .

If you need to borrow money by then, you will definitely know that something/someone has gone wrong - and it is probably you ( been there, done that of course, myself - I ordered eight decks in the last couple of days )

So, moderation and a good calculating brain are the keys for curbing this behavior for us , as , but who can resist a fine deck or two or ten, anyway, I wonder.....!

Magpie, it could be worse. Just think, you could be collecting race horses.

Jewel-ry  23 May 2004
There is no known cure. Just go with the flow ;)

Ravenswing  23 May 2004
magpie--

if you don't mind pre-owned, there's LOT of great decks inthe trading section......

fly well

Don't worry, I do the same thing. I recently doubled the size of my collection. Perhaps we can go to therapy for retail therapy together! :)

Ebony Rose*  23 May 2004
Hi, I'm going to be in the same boat in the near future and I hope I don't fall overboard when it happens. :)

Dakota  23 May 2004
LOL!! Yeah, I can relate; I went from 3 decks to 11 with 2 more in the mail and one more being bid on in the three weeks since I discovered eBay...............

Put DOWN the mouse and move AWAY from the computer......... Take a couple of deep breaths and play with the decks you already have until you are sure what you want next. (not sure if I am talking to myself or you here!!!) I have attempted to put myself on an eBay and Amazon "budget" and have slowed my acquisition pace, but as for stopping??!! uhhhhhhh.........

Rhiannon  23 May 2004
I feel a bout of this coming on the near future, several decks I've been waiting to be published are due out near the end of the year.....

R :)

VGimlet  23 May 2004
Heh heh, No cure.

I am going to be coming into a bit of money someday, and each month it gets a bit larger. (retroactive pay raise for 1 1/2 years so far...ugh!)

Whenever I get it, in addition to responsible things, I'm planning to splurge and get all the published decks under 100.00 in my wanted collection. If it takes long enough I have already bought them (and it might) I might buy a deck or even two from my over 100.00 list.

magpie9  23 May 2004
I suspected there was no cure..............and at least its not racehorses (thank you, Firemaiden, for pointing lthat out--I feel better already,)

Is there a tarotholic support grroup, somewnere...or is this it?? One of AT's many functions?

I've been doing ok with the practicalities, I'm just a little nervious about continuing to go overboard----

*Magpie walks the plank, weighed down with an old circus trunk filled with tarot decks. "Death before dishonor," she sobs.
"but wait,...Nobody's trying to dishonor me, it's just the decks they want!"I can save myself still!"
she turns towards the Pirates and says, "Anybody want a reading??How about I come back and give you a nice free reading . ALL of you, it's no trouble, really, It'll be fun!" she looks at a particulary seedy looking wretch and adds, " I can see you'll have a bright future, perhaps a new wooden leg, just let me get a deck out..."*

Ahhh, but wich deck? Suggestions? I've got some great ones....hee hee hee...

Dakota  23 May 2004
hahahahahaa yes, how to choose............ have you posted your list of decks yet for us to see??

sigh.............. I discovered today that even the MALL is not safe for us! I figured the mall was safe "non-tarot" ground when I agreed to take my daughters there this afternoon. Unwittingly, my footsteps turned toward the bookstore, but surely a mall bookstore could not have anything to tempt me....... ACK, there in the middle of their miserable little tarot section was one of the decks on my LIST!! (Mythic Tarot by Juliet Sharman-Burke) So, now I have 15 decks and a new one to be opened and enjoyed this evening........... hehehehe

Rhiannon, which "soon to be published" decks are you waiting for?

:D

Star Spirit  23 May 2004
I just went through this...I started out with one deck...bought 2 more just before Xmas...and now, somehow I have 9 and one on the way. I've told myself to calm down and stop it now, because I need time to work with what I have :) Although I'm anxious about getting a Tarot of Prague before they all sell out, yet I'm in a big city and haven't found one in any of the book stores, not even big ones (Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc). Barnes & Noble didn't have many decks at ALL that I saw, and I was disappointed and wondering if they were hiding somewhere. I tried to ask but no one would help and I had to leave. (Little off topic here--does anyone know of where I could find one? I'm in Boise, Idaho and there are tons of bookstores here and I haven't seen it anywhere. I can't easily order online right now :()

Dakota  23 May 2004
Dead Star, many eBay sellers will take money orders or personal checks; why not see if some of the ones who DO are selling some of the decks you are looking for? Obviously, delivery will take a bit longer since they will probably wait for a money order to arrive or a check to clear before they ship but that will give you time to work up a fever of anticipation......... :D

Are the Tarot of Prague decks really going to sell out? That deck is on my "gotta get" list but maybe I should bump it up a bit.........

Arnaud  23 May 2004
Dakota, i can tell you, the t-shirt shop is not safe enough for me either :-D Just was in town today to buy some cloths and then ... hoho .. next to the cloth shop, a magic store :-D Hehe, two more Tarot books, and i didnt buy a new deck only because the shop was closing and i would not have enough time to choose one :-D

Arnaud (argh .. 6 decks already, and it has been only two months since i discovered this site :-))

Mimers  23 May 2004
my tax return. Going........going........gone

but my list is doubled and none left over for the BBC this June! :|

What to do!?

Dakota  23 May 2004
Mimers, what's the BBC in June?

Mimers  23 May 2004

magpie9  23 May 2004
Dakota, you're an outright genius....How can you help me choose the right deck without the list?
Here is the list of new decks:

Roots of Asia
New Vision/Vica-Versa
Goddesses of the Light
Celtic Shamans Pack
RWS pocsket size
World Spirit tarot
Journey to the Orient/Marco Polo
Kalevala tarot
LS Celtic tarot
LS Fairy Tarot

Also the Elemental Tarot, but maybe that dosn't count, since it is a gift for some one else..I do have one, however.

OK Dakota--which one would you choose to read while walking the plank?
:D

Dakota  24 May 2004
OMG, Mimers!! Okay, my next paycheck is assigned......... Once I saw The Fool up on his rooftop, I was THERE....... Gee, a tarot addiction really simplifies life choices, doesn't it??

New Tarot Deck or food?
New Tarot Deck or shoes for the kiddies?
no contest.........

heheheheehe

Are we doing group orders for the free deck??

(That brings up a philosophical aside: how many "sets" does one really need? Seems to me more and more that they boil down to a few interesting chapters on the history and/or symbology of that deck and once they morph into a catalogue of card meanings I put them back on the shelf and there they stay.)

Magpie, hmmmmmmm, "plank-walking" tarot, just about says it all, doesn't it? All I can say is that one must consult one's heart. Ponder your list and practice eliminating decks from it. When you hit a deck and your heart screams "NO, No, no......", that MIGHT just be your next deck. LOL

miss_apples  24 May 2004
I just came in contact with $600 in extra cash and I spent $70 at my local metaphysical store. I woulda spent more but I woulda got major moans and groans from my significant other since I had already boughten myself a $40 jade ring the night before. I only got 2 tarot decks though, and one wasnt even for me. The one I got for myself was the Winged Spirit Tarot. Then I got the Whimsical tarot for my friend for her birthday. The rest of the $70 included a book by Doreen Virtue, an elephant carved from rose quartz, and a pair of earrings with the sun and the entire zodiac on them.

You have the Kalevala Tarot as well? *bounces* (Sorry, big fan of Finnish things.. :D )

magpie9  25 May 2004
Yes, Hedgecub, I have it, and am fascinated by it, but don't know the legend it's based on. Finland has always interested me, tho I don't know a thing about it..the deck has really interesting illustrations, and fits the RWS template reasonably well. Even not knowing its myth, I think it will be a easy reader.
