For me if I read for myself I find that particular cards represent particular personal meanings, for example particular people. In this deck the 9 and 10 of coins have a personal meaning for me.They depict the same person and once I did a spread a number of times to find the same cards being displayed- these 2.Ok if that is correct then there are at least 2 layers of meaning when one does a reading for another. They also have personalised cards. So, without going off the map there must be a third layer and so on.By the way all this is theory for me as I am still I think on a basic level!

Personlizing the cards is an important step in being a good reader. When you see some one you know in a certain card, especially the court cards, then you make a mental connection with the card. Am I getting what you wrote correctly?

For example, when I see the Queen of Swords, I see some one who went to school with me. She was a strong willed, devious person who I respected for her brains, but always thought ten times before trusting her!!! Now, when this cards comes up in a reading, I think of her and interpret it accordingly. Of course, it depends on the querent, the question and the surrounding cards, but thats it basically.

What you've done is an important step. Removing the Tarot from the realm of basic "meanings" and elevating it to a higher level. :)

I definately agree :)

For me, the Star is a specific person who can also be the Queen of Cups. I tend to read cards like the Seven of Cups as getting my head out of the clouds. Meanings can jump out at you and you just have to grab it an go. I think there's a level of over-analysing where a card can have so many meanings that there's too many open roads and not enough clarity. Sometimes, you have to block out possible meanings, too, if you find too many open ends.
