Mother's Day--a neat experience

I took my very first trip to Borders Books today (living in the big city now, never have before). Well I went browsing for tarot decks of course :D and had my first public experience with another onlooker. She was somewhat older than me, and wasn't a tarot reader herself, but was very interested in getting a deck for her mother. It felt so odd to be browsing the shelves for tarot decks with a stranger  but it was nice. Most people don't know I read tarot--maybe my boyfriend, mother, grandma, and a friend or two and that's it. I've never really conversed in person about it with another individual before. We chatted, and when I found the rest of the decks I let her know and ended up helping her understand the difference between tarot and oracles and choosing a deck for her mother. She recognized the Rider-Waite cards as ones her mother had used once and picked up a set, but didn't like the pictures so much (like me) so I directed her to the Universal Waite set, which she liked much better. She thanked me for my help and left happily.

Just wanted to share that and ask:

a) What was your first public experience with another reader/interest (good or bad)? and...

b) Did anyone else get a deck for Mother's Day? :)

I got a deck of Karma cards from my own family. And I bought a deck called "The Answer Deck" for myself for Mother's Day. But it didn't get here yet... :(

The first time I remember talking to someone else about Tarot stuff, out of my family, was a belly dancer I was working with a few summers ago. I was hired to do henna skin designs, and she was also there for entertainment.

We started talking about reading Tarot (I could either do henna or Tarot... I chose henna, too loud and gnarly for reading). She read cards too, but prefered not to read there either. And she asked me what deck I had.

It was the strangest feeling.... I went blank for a moment... someone was talking Tarot to me.... someone I barely knew... who was wearing very little clothing.....

"Ohhh, ummm a Universal Waite...." :D

Alyssa, you rock! Belly dancing, henna, Tarot...gosh, we're almost like spiritual sisters! :)
This weekend I went to a belly dance workshop and bazaar and did henna designs to earn some 'play' money. My first customers were a tribal-style troupe who also just happened to be Wiccans too! Talk about synchronicity!
Sometimes it's cool how stuff like that happens... (sorry I guess this is off topic!)

Cool stories guys. Come on I'd really like to hear more! I'm sure you all have one. Or can at least tell me which decks you got for Mother's Day ;)

I think my first public experiences came when I put up my tarot display at work. :)

I got a lot of comments, and all but two were very positive. A few people actually came in wanting to talk to me about where I got some of my decks.

Probably the best one was the woman whose friend read with the Voyager tarot. She was quite tickled to see I had a copy in my display, and we talked about the different types of tarot for quite a while.

No Decks for Mother's Day though. :P

I'm still in the Tarot closet, so to speak...I haven't made it real public that I read.
But...I did talk my sweetie into letting me use his Ebay account to get a new deck and won! So that was my Mother's Day present, a new Legends deck. The bummer is having to wait on USPS Snail Mail another couple weeks before it actually gets into my hot little hands.

hi deadstar,

my story goes sth like yours. i was at the bookstore checking if there were any new decks on display. there was another girl looking at the decks as well, and she asked me for advice on picking a suitable beginners' deck. i recommended the Rider Waite of course and told her that most beginner's guider books use RWS meanings. Didnt really have much of a discussion with her about tarot though.

my friends and immediately family know i read the tarot too. my family is thankfully supportive ( my father even asked me for a reading abt a work situation once, which is very unlike him), most of my friends as well except the staunch christians.
