There are different kinds of 'schools', too, which should perhaps be taken into consideration.
For example, the BOTA, though it may very well classify itself as a 'school', is really a Golden Dawn derivative with its own peculiar views on both Tarot and Qabalah - neither of which I personally agree with, even though much that they do and the way they do it I would support.
Other 'schools' tend to also have very strict or narrow ways of introducing Tarot, and usually use either the Waite Colman Smith deck (at times abbreviated to RW, RWS, or WCS), the Crowley Harris 'Thoth' deck, or the Wirth deck. Again, the particular views are more a reflection of those particular 'schools' then they are of the Tarot per se.
In many ways, there is probably more within these Forums than the 'courses' have - and at least here you will also generally have the various views mentioned!
Of some of the correspondence courses which I have heard or perused, I am very critical...

Hi linabeet,
Here are some that I would personally reccomend.
This one, by Joan Bunning, is free and is exceptionally well done.
http://learntarot.org/course.htm
If you ask me, this is the only one you need. It does not offer any type of certificate, but the information is good.
Kris Hadar's site is another one for free that teaches based on the Marseille deck and is excellent! The amount of time and attention and knowledge is very commendable. It is Kris Hadar's site and you can find it here. You take it one course at at time, and have to wait for them to post the lesson, but it is very good.

If you do want a certificate, I would also reccomend the Tarot School in NYC. I have not taken any of their courses, but I have taken some of their workshops, and can say that they are good, genuine people that are very knowledgable in Tarot and Golden Dawn. Their courses do have a substantial fee, and do provide you with a certification saying you have completed the course.
here is their site http://www.tarotschool.com/
These are the only ones I know enough about to reccomend. There are many others, but I do not have first hand knowledge.
Hope you find one right for you!

The Barnes & Noble site offers classes too, one of them a Rider Waite beginners class. It usually runs every 3 months, so you have to check the dates. But it's free.

that's what I was thinking....and to add to that...
Everyone has a different way of learning.
Taking/attending a course/school only {IMO} restricts an individual from learning in the manner that works best for them.
Here at the forums, learning is achieved quickly because of the ability to go with a personal inspertion. Information is retained easier when one 'dictates' thier own lessons.

Greetings!
Someone posted about the
www.learntarot.com course! WELL, TABI the Tarot Association for the British Isles, holds FREE i said FREE training groups following most of this course, with tutors and fellow students to help progress with tarot! You do not need to be a member of TABI, but after the course you probably will want to! If you complete the course, you get a certificate too!
I have been a tarot reader for AGES, but this course has helped me leaps and bounds.
check out the tabi website www.tabi.org.uk and click course! My group's course has only a few weeks left before we pass/fail/get chucked out, so they will be looking for new students!
Feel free to email me with any questions, and i'll put you through to the organisers.
OH and you dont have to be from the UK to join the courses, one of the tutors i'm learning with is from New Zealand!
Blessings
Sezo
