Hi everyone I am running my first Teenage Tarot Workshop in a couple of weeks and am really looking forward to it and hoping it fills up. Below is the blurb for the workshop:
"During the workshop you will learn how to use the Tarot to inspire a positive outlook and healthy self-
esteem. The interpretation and discussion of the cards will be presented in a way that is relevant to the
challenges and joys of this age group. Enchanting the cards with a spell and learning how to begin to
develop psychic abilities with the cards will be included. This will be a magical and fun-filled workshop."
I would love to hear from any teenagers, anyone who has been a teenager, Mums and Dads etc etc all your comments thoughts and ideas are truly welcome and appreciated gratefully :)
What do you think is appropriate? Inappropriate? Should be said or done or not? Approaches etc.
Many thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some questions come to mind:
Where are you holding this event?
Are you in a large city or a small town ?
Are you requiring parental permission ?

I'm in the city of Melbourne and the workshop will be held here:
www.spellbox.com
Of course we will be getting parental permission, this workshop came about because a teenager wanted to do my tarot course, but couldn't for many reasons. I then decided to run a Teenage Workshop, which is all above board and aware and not done unless we have the teenagers parents permission.
Sorry should of posted this info in my first post!

That sounds like the right way to go about it. In America it is likely that if you were planning on teaching tarot & spells to teens without their parents permission, you would be in a whole wasp's nest of trouble . Many people don't realize this though.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I tried to go to the website, but i keep getting messages saying it doesn't exist... are you sure that's the right link? I wasn't sure whether it was the wrong site or whether the site was just down.

Just curious, are you suppying the cards for the fee? How are you determining fees? Has there been any community concern/protest/opposition? What kind of books/handbooks/informational material are you providing?

The workshop requires you to bring your own deck and we have made it cheaper than the usual workshop price. Generally the shop decides the price, which we agree on together.
Spellbox is a well known haven in our city centre, people from all walks of life and many different cities come to the shop which manifests a very positive and creative enviroment which is also fun! Spellbox enjoys having great publicity which is very positive having recently been on TV here and often in the paper.
I will print out some info for the participants and will be using a spell from the shop. We sell a wide range of decks, books, spells etc. which can be purchased at a discount price by workshop participants.

Thanks for sharing that info. It is interesting to hear how tarot is received and shared in different areas.

Depending on how long the workshop is you might think about creating sheets with say either a few of the majors in B&W for participants to color and then talk about the meanings of the colors. Or create a sheat with a border for a card and the people color there own Fool card (or any card that you pick) then talk about each of their own cards that they drew and why.

Also you may want to create a list of teen friendly tarot items, you can do a search on Amazon for teen and tarot and you will come up with several books geared towards your audience. I know that there is a new tarot kit comming out any time now that includes a Los Scarbeo Universal deck and a tarot book for teens "Maria Shaw's Tarot Kit for Teens" ISBN: 0738705233 right now I think the set is only about $14.00 on Amazon for people that might have a strict budget it might be something to think about.

Greetings!
Well i'm a Tarot Teen - well i started off a tarot toddle and grew up :P The only bit of advice i can give you for the course is to treat teenagers as grown ups and like a usual tarot class with maybe a few 'modern' ways of helping them relate to the cards. I have never liked the teen wicca/paganism books on the market and teen tarot seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. Give us some credit!!!
Sorry that was a little rant there - but it does upset me that only since i turned 18 that my thoughts and opinions have counted.
I think you have to be careful with how your blurb is, because with any whiff of magick you are getting alot of sabrina type wiccans coming in who may not be as dedicated as the more skeptic teens out there who are looking for an adult but down to earth introduction.
Just wondering, how will you 'presented in a way that is relevant to the challenges and joys of this age group.'? Tarot has always been relevent in my life, pre/post and during puberty!
Sorry if this post seems abit antagonistic but the teen market really inferiates me sometimes - teens are normal people, who have brains.
I'm sure your workshop would be a great introduction for teens and parents alike.

How about a list of inexpensive decks like the Tarot to go (pocket Hansen Roberts set) which retails for only $7.95 US and the Tarot Nova set (maybe not the easiest to learn with but definitely worth a look)

dolphingirl thanks for your thoughts, the workshop is for 3 hours so probably won't have time to color in cards, but will keep it in mind for future workshops :)
inanna_tarot great to hear from a teen, I too was a teenage tarot girl. I will, of course be treating all participants as adults. We don't sell teen stuff in our shop and I will be recommending what I do adults in my workshops: decks, books etc.
I have no problem with Sabrina types turning up, each to their own is my motto. If you read my first post you will understand why the teen workshop has been put into place.
Talking about presented to the age group etc. and your comments about puberty are what is intended, doesn't it sound like that? Depending on the ages of participants I will work out what is appropriate for age groups. ie: Will they be around 14 or 16 or something else.
I, personally wish there had been a teen tarot workshop around when I was a teenager!

Hear hear! I have constantly found teenagers and children to be able to read the same Tarot books as adults, use the same Tarot decks as adults, with no difficulty.
One thing I would suggest though is informality. You'll find the people in the workshop will learn more if it's very informal, fun, and sociable. Get them doing lots of things practically, even if it's only a few Tarot games. Teenagers learn more through practice than through being talked at. :D
It will be useful for the participants in the workshop to see that there are others their age who are interested in Tarot. I remember how isolated I felt: hopefully your workshop will help alleviate that feeling.
Encourage silliness: if the teenage girl wants to find out if so-and-so fancies her (even though she's never spoken to him in her life) let her do the reading. It doesn't matter if it's a pointless reading- she'll get practice at interpreting the cards.
Other than that, have fun! Us teens are great company (honest!) and you'll find that those in your workshop will have a lot to share, no matter how much previous experience they've had with Tarot. I have learned so much about Tarot from beginners and young people. :D
Blessings,
Kiama

All this I plan to do, I am really looking forward to it and I love teenage energy :D :D :D

Hello,
I was just strolling around on the internet and found this site:
http://home.att.net/~jwricklef/
IT has some nice games, I think not childish at all, on learning tarot (see section games and humor). They seem quit useful in studying taort. Maybe something you could use in your course?

Because there are so many different backgrounds and people have heard different things, you might suggest what background you are teaching from, for instance,
"I find it best in a diverse group with many different learning levels to suggest my particular way of teaching. I'm working from a 78 card deck with pictures on each card. I'm following the Rider Waite Smith English style and have found Mary Greer is an excellent starting point...and my favorites to work on in class include the Universal Waite and others like it. However, if you have a different style deck, we can try to adopt..."
You might get RPG fanatics with the Vertigo or a Natalie Hertz Vampire or Lord of the Rings/Dragons Tarot or the fanciful Moon Garden/Whimsical style fans or anime tarotists who wonder what to do with their unusual decks...
Just a suggestion. You might want to bring a few different decks that you don't mind others handling in case some forget their decks...or perhaps their bookstore tarot might be one without pictures on the pips and they haven't a clue how to read without pictures.
Regards,
Cerulean Mari
