I did readings for a group of girls this weekend, most of them are cousins and close friends, most of the readings were about career because a lot of them just finished the college and are searching for the 1st job or working in thesis.
I had no problem doing several readings using the RWS and the Hanson Roberts decks, then one girl asked for a general reading about her thesis, she wanted to know what does she need to finish it, the cards:
The Emperor / Death / 9 of Swords
Her body language showed discomfort for the cards and I was unable to read for her, I explained the transformation meaning of Death but my reading was really mediocre to say the least, after that I stopped reading.
Later on I learn from one of the girl's friends that she has just passed a suicidal crisis and is under therapy 2 times a week, did Tarot showed her inner state and that is why I couldn't get any message from cards regarding her thesis?
Have you experienced something like this? how did you overcome this block?

Flavio: As does occur, sometimes a querent will ask a question but there is an underlying issue or situation that takes the forefront rather than that asked. The difference between the question presented & the one not could hinder a reading.
It seems she reacted intuitively to the particular cards. May be sensitive to what the cards could reveal (especially given the recent history & if the information given by another is accurate).
Whence one has nothing else to go by, best to listen to the instincts & not read. In that sense, it may have been prudent to note the body language or other nuances.
In viewing the throw as a spread of Past/The Emperor, Present/Death, Future/9-Swords, I can see where it could apply to both the theis & personal circumstances.
Where the thesis is concerned, it could indicate the present as being a problematic time to focus the attention on the writing as she is undergoing changes (Death). Her worry about the outcome (9-Swords) could stem from the academic pressure (The Emperor) & fears that she will not successfully complete the thesis.
Interesting the juxtaposition of The Emperor (4) & Death (13 = 1+3 = 4). Life versus Death. Passages. The end of a stable period or the end of an old pattern which gives rise to concern or conflict. May refer to the need of &/or interest in stability & the challenges to acquire same.
