another negative post, I'm afraid (and it's only my second!) anyway, I just have another question about doing the reading itself. Already, I have little routine that I do (close my curtains, put on the music that I was listening to when I did my first reading, shuffle my deck, pray to the God and Goddess to bless and protect the cards and the reading and then form the question properly in my mind) but, the thing is, I'm scared that I'm either missing out something REALLY important or doing something wrong. For example, when I ask a question that I haven't found a spread for, I just, well, make it up, with each card representing part of the question. My readings seem to be fairly accurate, thought. Anyway, what I'm asking is for either reassurance that I'm doing OK, or advice as to what to do.
Thankyou,
Blessed be. Laura. xxx

Sounds like you are doing everything fine. Besides, it is whether it feels right to you which is important. I do not do half the things that you do and most of the time, my readings are comfortable and pretty accurate. I wouldn't worry. This is the time to have fun and 'go with it', enjoy it. As many have said here in the boards have said, the magik is inside you, not the cards, so as long as you are in a calm environment with no interuptions and you respect the tarot, it should all be fine. There are no hard and fast rules. Go for it!
Best of luck and wishes

There really is no one 'right' way to do Tarot. Everyone has to find what works for them. Personally I find that tarot works for me when I treat it very playfully, like a game. Others find that a more spiritual approach is better for them. Similarly, some people like a lot of ritual, others don't.
The only thing that really matters is that what you do feels right and comfortable for you. It's as simple as that.
(I like your name, by the way :) )

You need more confidence in the cards.Handle your chosen deck more.Even without a reading. Look at individual cards. Really get to like them. Carry out 3 card readings for people you know on your own. Try and connect the cards to what you know about them. Finally go back to the cards in your thoughts.

Relax. :) That's one of the best things about tarot - it's not like math, there isn't only one right answer.
Just enjoy using the cards, and discovering what works the best for you. Do a lot of readings. Get comfortable with your cards. Have fun.

Hi rainbow faerie!
Welcome to AT.
Gareth and the others all have great points, and I don't really have anything new to add other than to encourage you to make sure your chosen deck really is speaking to you. By that I mean do you really like the images and do they call to you personally?
You really will get more comfortable with your deck as time goes by and it isn't about the candle or the cloth or the music! It's about you being comfortable with tapping into the enrgy and information that the cards represent. So put aside your fears and understand you are starting out on a wonderful journey.
The whole Tarot journey will delight and surprise you, but this beginning time is very special. I remember all the times I would do readings for myself in those first days and just be blown away by what my cards were saying. Don't forget to write down these first few readings and then keep writing...Have fun and
Blessed Be,
Claudia

rainbowfaerie, I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Does something feel wrong to you?
90% of the time, I don't do any of the things you do. I just try to find a clean table, and hope for a few minutes peace, and I'm usually very happy with my results.
I do like candles, however. I may try to work in a candle ...

I found out this is the best way for me to do a reading - but it took me a while before I realized it worked better this way.
When I thought...wait a minute...this spread does not answer the questions I want answers to...then I started doing my own, and it has all become so much clearer and more focused.

To do something wrong when it is working for you. Tarot reading relies on more than just a sequence of actions or a particular kind of music. It is all in the way you are able to focus on the cards and the message.--Tao

Don't worry Laura. The only thing you are doing wrong is being scared.
My advice is to keep doing what you are doing. Except for the being scared. You are doing great!!!!
