Tarot reading is like groping in the dark.

I just realized this when I did an online reading for a friend. She gave me a question, and of course it was up to me to figure out the answer WITHOUT KNOWING THE DETAILS. So there I was, reading whatever the cards were telling me and mixing them with my own intuition. When I was done and I gave my answer to my friend, I was surprised with how accurate I was without knowing the background of the story at all. Reading the cards was like groping in the dark. I had nothing to go by except the cards and my own sixth sense. I guess that's the mystery and wonder of the tarot.
I'm sure more experienced readers have realized this already. Well, just wanted to share that anyway. :) Y'all have fun!

Great story, Kittaine :)
I have had more than one reading where I've read through the whole spread, and got to the end, and said... "Well.. I hope that made sense to you. Because, honestly, it made no sense to me." This is, I admit, sometimes offered in an apologetic way.
But, I often hear them say, "Oh ... it made sense alright," or something of the like.
(Then I go... Whew~! :D )
It's a bit like playing the Fool isn't it? Walking right off that cliff, and not knowing what might happen next.

LOL! I haven't done that many readings, but I know how that feels, and the big "OH THANK GOD!!! I'M PSYCHIC AFTER ALL!" kind of relief I get if I got the reading right. :D

Great analogy! When I was still ignorant to tarot, I had this really great reading done for me. At the time I had the misconception that when I asked a question, the reader would automatically know the background of the story and would be able to piece together all the details on his own. I thought he was "psychic" like that! Well, now I know how it really feels! The querents look to us and think we know all, but sometimes we're prolly more clueless than they are!

Perhaps another analogy is trying to piece together bits of a puzzle without having seen the picture on the box. A good tarot reader will be able to get pieces to fit together, but it doesn't mean they make any sense to anyone but the querent, who is the only person who's seen the whole story...

After your in the dark a while you realize it is just a reflection of light. It's also like a blind person figuring things out. Some of them can see with no sight!
Something like that anyway.

 this one's happened to me. A long, long time ago I bought one of those great big 5000 piece puzzles. The picture on the box wasn't the right one...

Not having experience with the specific lingo, wouldn't what you have described be called a "cold reading"? In any case, these are the only kind of readings i've done up until now, limited details, e-mail kinds...and because they are more obscure, and in some ways more difficult, I think they have really helped me develop/refine my tarot reading skills/abillity....One day I may get confident/brave to read live/in person....
