When I receive a new deck of cards, I begin to shuffle and spread. My only question is "What do you want me to know?" I may spread and shuffle several times. Soon a message begins to form. Sometime I begin with a single face down card and ask the other cards to explain it! The cards begin to bring a story. They offer insight to the meaning of the card. This can be a way of becoming more aware of your Tarot cards.--Tao

um, I know it looks like I edited tao51's post. She had accidently inserted many many carriage returns and there was about 4 inches of blank space at the end of her post.

ps if it turns out you really wanted that for effect, just put them back in.

tao51, yes, letting the cards lead is method that I also follow occasionally. It can be difficult to tell what the universe wants some days especially, and what you describe is a gentle and effective method of doing that.

That's very similar to what I do, too. I ground and center, pull a card, and see what it's telling me.
It helps me decide whether or not the deck is for me.

a deck will try to communciate to you but it is difficult sometimes to understand. If the deck does not communicate then allow it several chances. It will eventually find its way to you.--Tao

Really, Tao? I have the Witches Tarot (Reed, Cannon) and I simply cannot do a thing with it. The pictures mean NOTHiNG to me! I wonder if it is me or them?

I would first try asking it to help you understand it. Pull one card from the deck, then place 4 cards around it. Then study the four cards in relation to the first card drawn. If that does not work then ask a trusted deck to help you understand the new deck. Follow the same proceedure but this time use four cards from the trusted deck to explain the card. You may have to persist but it will eventually open to you.;--Tao

Tao, what a fabulous idea!
I am familliar with and have done the new deck spread.
And when I get a card I don't understand in a reading, I'll draw others to clarify it.
But I'd never thought of using this method to learn a deck!
Splendid!
Here, here!
