OK, this is a peeve of mine. Is it:
"TAR-o" (emphasis on the first syllable; dictionary supported version)
-or-
"tar-OH" (emphasis on the second syllable)
Which do you use? Of the six Friends, I'm channelling Monica right now ...

I used to use the second, but now I use the first, since it seems to be the prevailing one.
My Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary also pronounces it the first way you listed.
It took a while to break my old habit, and then the other night I heard a woman (who doesn't know tarot) pronounce it with an ending t-sound (as in carrot). That was a bit of a shock.

I usually pronounce it as rhyming with arrow. I have heard it pronounced Tay-ROT' . --Tao

Thanks for all your responses (I didn't think I was in a minority on this!). The "carrot" pronunciation is definitely the most cringe-inducing ....

Everybody knows tarot rhymes with antidisestablishmentarianism.
:)
...but seriously -- TARE-oh for me.

Now the shocked one it's me! hehehe in spanish we pronounce with the T at the end, like the "carrot" pronunciation but a softer "r" sound (carot?)

I always said it accent on first syllable...when I went into our local metaphysical shop and asked where the TAH' ro materials were, she said the word back to me at least 5 times with the accent on the second syllable. It's fine to me if people choose to say it the way they choose to say it!
But I was a bit annoyed, since I really felt she was "correcting" my
first syllable accented Tarot....
oh well...sigh....

Oh heck, say it both ways :D Thats what I do, depending on who I am speaking with. (Just don't say it like carrot *shudders*)

It seems to me to be a north/south thing. We up here in the north had a teacher from way down south and we'd never heard the ta - ROT before, she said it more like to - ROE. Since meeting more southeners it seems to be a trend. I'm of the TA - rot myself.

I'm with those of you who pronounce it like "arrow", with a bit of a softer "a" (as opposed to something like "aero-space"). I don't think I've heard of it pronounced with the emphasis on the last syllable, or like "carrot"! I suspect that it is a regional thing though - "tomayto/tomatto" -- whatever works for you! :)
