As a bit of OT humour, I ran across this (again). It appears, with embellishments, from time to time. Friends, I give you, the ultimate Country Song:

I got drunk the day my Ma got out of prison
As I drove down to the station in the rain
But I never got to meet her in my pickup
'Cos she upped and drove her truck into a train

Hmmm... Moon, Eight of Swords, Chariot, Three of Swords etc. etc. })

Everybody, sing along :D

"And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standing in the rain
And you don't have to call me darlin
Darlinnnnn
You never even call me by my name"

(now this song will be stuck in my head for at least 24 hours) ;P

He said I was in my early forties
with a lot of life before me
when a moment came that stopped me on a dime
and I spent most of the next days
looking at the x-rays
Talking bout the options
and talking bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
that this might really be the real end
how's it hit you when you get that kinda news
man what'd you do

and he said
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named BluManchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

Or that scene in one of the finest movies of all time, “The Blues Brothers”, when they walk into the bar…

“What kind of music do you have here?”

“Both kinds – Country and Western”

Let’s see now, is that the Two of Swords…?

Take This Job and Shove It, sung by Johnny Paycheck:

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.
My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

I've been workin' in this fact'ry,
For nigh on fifteen years.
All this time, I watched my woman,
Drownin' in a pool of tears.
An I've seen a lot of my good folk die,
Had a lot of bills to pay.
I'd give the shirt right off of my back,
If I had the guts to say.

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.
My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

Well, that foreman, he's a regular dog,
The line boss is a fool.
Got a brand new flat-top haircut;
Lord, he thinks he's cool.
One of these days, I'm gonna blow my top,
And sucker, he's gonna pay
Lord, I can't wait to see their faces,
When I get the nerve to say:

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.
My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

Take this job and shove it.

Written by Harlan Howard and Hank Cochran
(As recorded by Jim Reeves, November 21, 1961)

I fall to pieces
Each time I see you again
I fall to pieces
How can I be just your friend

You want me to act like we've never kissed
You want me to forget, pretend we've never met
And I've tried and I've tried but I haven't yet
You walk by, and I fall to pieces

I fall to pieces
Each time someone speaks your name
I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame

You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who'll love me, too, the way you used to do
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces

(I fall to pieces)
Each time someone speaks your name
(I fall to pieces)
Time only adds to the flame

You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who'll love me too, the way you used to do
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces

Yankees. Yankees ever'where.

* Cards? Y'll wanna play cards whin yr' Dawg is runned over? No wonda' yo wife left ya fer a man who owns his Own trailer on the other side of the county line, just past the Honkytonk, where he plays git-tar.*

Moongold  17 Sep 2004
magpie9 - you inspired this :D. It's very Moonish, don't you think?

Beware of dog

I been lying around the whole damn day
Come on baby it's time to play
Can't you hear me scratching at your back door
Don't tell me to hush, it's time to howl

Don't tell me to sit, it's time to prowl
Don't throw me no bones, 'cause, baby, tonight I need a little something more
I'm headed down to the kennel club
Gonna lap some beer and scarf some grub
Maybe I'll chase some cars on down the street
I got an itch and I'm scratching it
Like it led to both kibble and bit

Baby, I am one stone mongrel mutt in the throes of a Texas heat
I'd be better, but I'm too bad
I'd be saner, but I'm too mad
If you wanna play it safe, I think you had
Best beware of dog
I been lying around the whole damn day
Come on, baby, it's time to play
Let's forget that leash, least for now
I won't beg and I won't whine
But I might roll over if so inclined
I'm a real good boy, I think it's time that you found out just how

CHORUS
I'd be better, but I'm too bad
I'd be saner, but I'm too mad
If you wanna play it safe, I think you had it all

Best beware of dog
Best beware of dog
Best beware of dog

Well I caught my wife with another man
And it cost me ninety nine
On a prison farm in Georgia
Close to the Florida line
Well I'd been here for 2 long years
I finally made the warden my friend
And so he sentenced me to a life of ease
Taking care of Ol Red

Now Ol' Red he's the damnedest dog that I've ever seen
Got a nose that can smell a two day trail
He's a four legged tracking machine
You can consider yourself mighty lucky
To get past the gators and the quicksand beds
But all these years that I've been here
Ain't nobody got past Red

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Well I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter
To my cousin up in Tennessee
Oh and he brought down a blue tick hound
She was pretty as she could be
Well they penned her up in the swampland
'Bout a mile just south of the gate
And I'd take Ol' Red for his evening run
I'd just drop him off and wait

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Now Ol' Red got real used to seeing
His lady every night
And so I kept him away for three or four days
And waited till the time got right
Well I made my run with the evenin' sun
And I smiled when I heard 'em turn Red out
'Cause I was headed north to Tennessee
And Ol' Red was headed south

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Now there's red haired blue ticks all in the South
Love got me in here and love got me out

Yup, How could I have forgotten Dawgs? })

Just for them (and people attached to chains)

The beast in me, is caged by frail and fragile bars
restless by day and by night rants and rages at the stars
God help the beast in me.
The beast in me, has had to live with pain
And how to shelter from the rain
And in the twinkling of an eye
Might have to be restrained
God help the best in me.

by Johnny Cash

And I even used the song title in my Tarot notes...;)

HAPPINESS IS YOU
Recorded by: Johnny Cash
Written by: Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash

Way down the mountain, I chased a moonbeam
On the beach, I built sand castles, too
My moonbeams faded, my castles tumbled
All of this was meaningless, 'cause happiness is you

CHORUS:
No more chasin' moonbeams or catchin' falling stars
I know now my pot of gold is anywhere you are
My heart won't miss you; my heart goes with you
Loneliness is emptiness, but happiness is you

I tried to doubt you, and live without you
Tried to deny that I love you like I do
But I realize now, and I'll admit it
You'll always be a part of me, 'cause happiness is you

A few months ago, I put this song on a mixed CD for my S.O. because of what it communicated about finding a person who helps you move beyond your illusory fantasies and connects you to something much more real.

So in this song, the narrator moves from The Moon, inspired by the Two of Cups and/or The Lovers, to the Ten of Cups... Any other cards I'm missing? Maybe The Tower, representing transition, the revelation that blows apart the wall of ideas and habits one has built around oneself? Would anyone use different cards to illustrate the arc of events in this song?

MeeWah  17 Sep 2004
Noby: Not familiar with this Johnny Cash song, but how about:

8-Cups, R (down the mountain); The Moon (chasing moonbeams), Page-Cups (beach & sandcastles); The Tower (all meaningless); 2-Cups (happiness is you).

Pickup Man by Joe Diffie
(Kerry Kurt Phillips/Howard Perdew)

Well I got my first truck, when I was three,
Drove a hundred thousand miles on my knees
Hauled marbles and rocks, and thought twice before
I hauled a Barbie Doll bed for the girl next door
When she paid me with a kiss I began to understand,
There's just something women like about a PickUp Man

When I turned sixteen, I saved a few hundred bucks
My first car was a Pickup Truck
Started cruisin' the town and the first girl I seen
Was Bobbie Jo Gentry the homecoming queen
She flagged me down and climbed up in the cab, and said
"I never knew you were a Pickup Man!"

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

Most Friday nights, I can be found
In the back of my truck on an old chaise lounge
Backed into my spot at the drive-in show
You know a cargo light gives off a romantic glow
I never have to wait in line at the popcorn stand,
There's just something women like about a pickup Man

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

A bucket of rust, or a brand new machine
Once around the block and you'll know what I mean

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

6 of cups, Star, 9 of cups chorus: Knight of Pentacles
