Halloween Party ~ Tarot Readings

After reading Going Pro thread started by The 78th Fool, I was wondering what ideas everyone had for giving readings for Halloween.

How we could have a party on Halloween, advertise it some how to promote tarot readings. Even plan some kind of a party to invite people to experience the tarot. Oct. 31 is on Sunday this year so Saturday night is perfect!

~ if we charged we could say we were donating the money to something.

~ decorate

~ have colourful drinks

~ costumes

~ have pot luck

~ send invitations with RSVP so we knew who were showing up & if they were bringing a friend.

Halloween is only 2 months and a few days away so maybe we could get ideas together and help anyone who would like to promote "their tarot path"

Ideas please!

Well, I'm a Pagan and we take Halloween (Samhain) pretty seriously.
This year I'll be attending a ritual & party with members of my Dianic (women's only) circle. We'll do a lot of different things, but I'll be doing readings, like past-life readings etc. for the other women.
Usually we try to do some sort of divination every Samhain.
Good luck with your party!

Some thoughts on tarot-ing up my fave holiday.

Costume: My first suggestion would be to go for an elaborate Renaissace Gypsy costume but a Swami or witch/wizard look could also work.

Maybe have a jack-o-lantern with a tarot theme.... take an image form the international icon tarot (they are very siple and would be easy to carve). Maybe the fool or the devil.

Charity donation sounds good. Halloween charity events almost always benefit some sort of children's organization, perhaps there's a program in your area that helps kids with cancer or maybe just donate the money to a children's hospital. You can pass out business cards to all who attend so that they can call you when theywant to pay for a reading in the future. If the turn out isn't too huge consider giving 2 cards to each person so they can refer a friend.

Music - now there are a lot of good halloween music cd's out there my favorites being produced by Elvira, but for this particular event you might choose to go for a more ominous but soothing musical selection. I would recommend Azam Ali's (of Vas) Portals of Grace a beautiful selection of 12th - 14th century chants. Loreena McKennit might be another good choice for the evening or Trina Malia's Shores of Avalon.

You might consider doing a simple ritual of "parting the veil". This can be just about anything you think people will be comfortable with. If you think people would go for it an ofering to spirits woud be good. If that sounds like too much maybe a simple call for everyone to be in alignment with their higher self.

If people didn't feel up to hosting such an event themselves there are probably charity events going on in the area that would be happy to have a fortune-teller around. It would probably still be ok to distribute business cards although I'd be leary about giving my cards to children. I know my town has a haunted house that local teens and preteens put together at the rec center every year and once I was too old to build and act in it I began doing readings for people in line.

There are a lot of Halloween-related fortune-telling superstitions, involving apple peels thrown over the shoulder and such.

You could use those for advertising.

I go to a Halloween party every year (always in costume of course) that has a volunteer Tarot Reader. She doesn't chage, but she does give out business cards. Last year, I donated some of my Caring Psychic Family majors only decks to hand out to everyone who had a reading as a souvenir. (Last year, that was EVERYONE at the party) As a reminder of the reading, if a major arcana card showed prominently in the reading, she (the reader) placed that card from the donated deck on the top, and tied it up with a bit of string so the sitter could see it easily and be able to think about it.

Just something I thought was neat and worth sharing......:P

Last year we had a Halloween party a a friends house who has a thirty three acre farm. We brought our pop up camper and did readings at the table all night long. What an amazing experience! For over six hours ( which seemed to be only a minute) I read cards and could not believe the accuracy. These people I barely knew, which is a great way to read cards because you can't be swayed by what you know about a person.
We lit some candles, burned some incense and really had a great time. I didn't charge any money, but the experience really outweighed and was worth so much more that any amount of money could provide. Good idea and I hope you go for it, you won't be sorry!
