and am really getting itchy to buy another deck.
but my question is:
Is it better to buy a brand new deck that no-one has touched or are second hand ones okay too?

All of my decks have had me as the owner. Sometimes buying new is a matter of a few units of currency. I love the smell of a new deck. When break the celloplhane on a new deck it is exciting. I am not a collector--I find different decks have a different view. What seems great for you in this issue of new/gently used is up to you.--Tao

I don't have a problem with 'used' decks. Infact, when in old antique shops or boot fairs, I always keep my eye open for an old and battered up collectable. As much as I like the experience of unwrapping a new deck, there is something nice about having a bit of history connected with it too.
I only have a few used packs. I bought one that had already been opened and seemed to have been used quite a lot - Enoil Gavat - it smelt of very strong incense. But I loved the fact that it had helped people in the past and came to me with some experience. It was like it was meant to find me.
Also, I have been very kindly 'gifted' with decks from both 'Scorpion' and the '78th Fool'; both times, the decks were packaged beautifully and the cards were in perfect condition. Often, receiving from a friend adds a nice dimention to the deck.
Hope you find what you are looking for Katie.

I personally love the smell of a new deck.. so my preference is new of course. And then there is that wonderful sensation of excitement when tearing the cellophane off...:D
Not to say I haven't bought used decks.. I have several.. I have one that is from the 70's, there is something about getting an wonderful old find (I have a few antiques- non tarot related), and I frequent the antique show at the fairgrounds and flea markets to look for old things. I have never come across a tarot deck yet though.
Preferance is entirely personal.

I just love getting tarot packs, period. I have used ones, I have new ones, gifted ones.....they are all good!!!
For certain decks, I have appreciated the age that went with it being used.

I really appreciate the history, and wonderment of where they have been, and what stories they have told.

I'm not sure what the price in your area is, or availability, but the

Sharman-Caselli Tarot : Aeclectic Tarot
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/sharman-caselli/
Review by Christopher Butler
I cannot praise this deck highly enough, not just for its outstanding artwork but for the numerous practicalities of its presentation. Indeed, all involved deserve a lot of praise. The deck can only be bought as part of a fairly lavish package, titled the Beginners Guide to the Tarot. In simple terms, if you want the deck, you have to buy the deck and book set - bad news on the wallet, I hear many people say, particularly experienced readers who really don't need another introductory book to add to their collection. The great news here is that not only would the book still be an asset to anyone's Tarot library, no matter how advanced, the whole glorious package retails for around the price of a standard U.S. Games tarot deck, making it in my book just about the best bargain I've ever added to my collection.

I like new things that no one else has "messed" up since I take good care of my things, BUT it depends. I have a used Greenwood b/c my desire to have that deck outweighed my preference for things to be perfect. I'm only anal about the condition of art & books.
