Music and rituals when reading

When I read with my Vargo Gothic Tarot I always play dark gothic music to help set the mood. I also read on dark velvet or my alter cloth with the purple and blakc pentacle on it. I almost never read in the day time... It never felt right to read with that deck in the day light. What other things could be done while reading?

Hello, Well, I have to agree with you that my best time for reading is when it gets dark outside :-) I usually light a candle, play some new age music and burn some myrhe. I ask for guidance, concentrate on my question and pull the cards.

Inscense frees my mind... and makes people wonder what else was being smoked. (I swear, one whiff of inscense and people think pot automatically. Geez.) My gypsy godmother would always read with two cups besides her: One filled with water, and one filled with scotch (It used to be wine, but she swore off wine and switched to scotch) And I also try to insist on a private place away from people (Its your reading, not everyone's) and lately I've developed this wierd habit where I Kiss my first two fingers, press it to their forehead, then to the cards. I clean the area where I am about to read. I prefer smooth surfaces rather than cloth, and nothing is smoother than my glass tabletop. I clear the table of all clutter and clean the area with windex, making sure all the smudges from my hands are off the table and it's nice and shiny. If it's cold I'll light a candle, but if it's warm in the room I won't. I usually do read after dark, but it's mostly for privacy rather than to set an atmosphere.

I like to read using background music from certain Putumayo CDs those music selections are easy to hear and don't distract me during the reading process. I always wash my hands and face before starting the reading, optional rituals include incense and the use of a piece of velvety paper in black color as a background for the cards, I love the contrast of the cards against the paper.
