I was just thinking about reversals AGAIN.
Sometimes I use them by their meanings, sometimes use them as blocked energy and then use another card to see how to unblock that cards meaning & sometimes I just read them as if they were upright. If I don't use them I take note of how many are reversed.
Would we be able to say that the reversed card is energy in our life that will be brought to the surface some time soon? It's right there in our subconscious but we can't see it.
This would take some of the negativity out of the reversals and then be used as unaware energy that surrounds us.
Just wondering if anyone does this in their readings.

Hi Ros,
That's exactly how I interpret some reversed cards - the energy is there but not yet or maybe it has been there and now it's on the wane.
Often I see the answer I'm looking for in a reversed card, if only it were upright. My challenge is then to get the energies of the card the right way up.
Don't know if that made sense - sometimes I get a blockage between brain and typing fingers :)
Love
Sulis xx

Thanks!
I think this is how I am changing my reading habits but just couldn't voice it properly. I would like to read the energy instead of the positive and the negative. This way I think I could get the message to flow better. The cards wouldn't be so structured.
I don't know either. LOL I can't voice it all at this time, but I know what I mean.

There are several books that reference the "Five D's" -- I'm sorry but I don't know the originator. However, they represent: Diminuation, Delay, Denial, Dark side and Direction.
One or more of these can be applied to a reversed card -- the context of the spread, the other cards, the question, and the position in the spread will generally favor one/more and not the others. I have used these guide words to lead me into a richer understanding and statement about the card for the querent. You might want to try this approach. Dave.

I tend to interpret most reversed cards as Sulis described, trying to discern if the energy is waxing or waning, and also considering if the energy is completely absent (this is what you need).
On the other hand, sometimes you have to listen to what pops up in your head. Yesterday I pulled a 5 of Wands x as my son's card of the day. Typically, I might interpret this as lack of competition or a minor quarrel escalating to something more serious. In this case, however, the phrase "playing field is not level; unfairness" is what came into my mind.
Sure enough, someone in my son's classroom reported to me that they didn't know how he could be expected to complete his work as he was being treated unfairly. Sometimes I hate it when the cards are right. :(
I also haven't heard of the 5 D's before.

Ros, Joan Bunnings book "Learning Tarot Reversals" might be of help to you.
She sees the energy of the reversals as in different phases.
Absent- energy does not seem present at all.
Early- energy is somewhat present, but strong phase lies ahead.
Late- energy is somewhat present, but strong phase is past.

In Mary Greer's "The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals", page 32, she cites James Ricklef as the originator of the five "D"'s.
* DELAY of the original effect.
* DIMINUTION of the original effect.
* DIRECT OPPOSITE of the original meaning.
* DARK SIDE of the original meaning.
* DIRECTION change.
For those interested. Dave.

Dadsnook,
Can you give an example of Direction Change. I don't totally get this one. Thanks, EAB.

I often see them this way, as delayed, blocked, maybe even stagnant possibilities, or sometimes even as something new bubbling under the surface, like a seed about to sprout, a pregnant situation.
But I'm also more and more seeing them as an internal energy, something that is present and acting on the situtation but is hidden, not expressed.
edited to add:
Dadsnook's Direction change reminds me of I Ching, how moving lines can turn the hexagram into the next permutation to develop.

Answer to EminemsAngelBaby.
Let us say that you have a question about dealing with a project manager in your ofice that wishes to assign you to a new (and deadend) project. You do a spread and in the position that suggests "actions to consider" you find the Knight of Swords Rx.
Upright this card might suggest that a frank discussion or an immediate counter proposal is required. Reversed, you might read this card as suggesting that a budget or limited resource needed for the project be first discussed before launching the project. These intermediate steps can actually be used to stonewall (halt) the project or create the overall consensus that it is not a well thought out proposal at this point.
In other words you have changed (or seen that) the direction of the project and your role in it is being diverted or delayed by first considering other issues that can be used to bring the project's validity into question. Dave.
