On page #170 in the October, 2004 Prevention Magazine
is the following: "Many Reiki masters are also registered nurses
sensible women with superior hand-washing skills, not flaky
tarot card readers.."
My question is: Do you think you are a flaky tarot card reader?
What is your opinion on the above quote. The article was
about Reiki healing. It had nothing to do with tarot cards or
readers. Yet Tarot Card Readers are being picked on.

Well, for one thing, it sounds like they're saying that tarot card readers have dirty hands!

That statement seems insulting on many levels. Begs me to question if all nurses or reiki masters are women? All nurses sensible? All tarot readers flaky? What about the nurse who is a reiki master and tarot reader? What does any of that have to do with hand washing? Also, you don't even need to touch a person to do reiki.
Was the article about hygeine? Or about trying to state that reiki isn't a "weirdo" thing like tarot?
Sheesh!

I agree with you lunar rabbit, it is very insulting. I can't stand all of the stereotypes out there in regards to tarot. I don't like it when we are put into the category of being "gypsy" imposters, who will lie and cheat to get money. We do what we do to help others and find out answers within ourselves. This doesnt make reiki any better than tarot or vice versa. I think Prevention Magazine needs to do a little research before judging us tarot readers.

Superior hand-washing?
Hmm.
Lemme try that again... distinguished hand-washing? Deluxe handwashing? Maybe paramount, I daresay PREMIUM hand-washing!
I think the Tarot stereotype worries me less than the sounds of a language gurgling in agony. :)
Or maybe they meant 'superior' in another way... as in a haughty hand-washing!
There we go. Much better.

ROFL!! Yes, yes. I think that may be the most offensive part of the whole bit!

The article was about energy healing and trying to make
it mainstream. The tarot card remark came from left field.,
It had nothing to do with the article. That is why I found it
offensive.

Is the article online?
Also, is there a contact email address where we might respond to that particular choice of words? I think they'd benefit from some honest feedback. Diplomatic feedback, of course -- one wouldn't want to be dismissed as flaky when responding to the article's content. ;)

Just *exactly* what *I* was thinking!! Now if someone would just provide a link to the article in question - then, we could e-mail them to death!! (Only in the sense of the card, of course!)

What is flaky?
My dictionary talks about snow-flakes, chips and cocaine.
I am not a snow-flake although it is going to snow pretty low down in Switzerland tonight (1500 meters).
I am not prone to eating chips because they make me put on weight and at my age I have to watch out for my weight.
And I have never ever sniffed cocaine - although I had plenty of occasions to do so in my wild youth. I found the whole business extremely distasteful.
So flaky it seems I am not.

I'm no flaky tarot reader!
I drink lots of water, and wash may hands after every client just to refresh myself. I thought that was being professional.
Flaky???

Maybe this person thinks that Tarot readers have dry skin. You know - isn't there an expression "flaky skin?"
Now maybe the author went to a reader who never used hand-cream and has this memory of flaky bits of skin floating around on the cards. If so, this probably traumatised her.
I wouldn't bother about writing to this person. I think there are more important things to do. But if anyone does write, please don't be aggressive about it. She obviously doesn't know better and is just ignorant.

I think of fish as flaky, when it's ultra-fresh and cooked just right. Maybe they're saying Tarot readers are . . . yummy? :D
Seriously I think whoever wrote that is flaky, at least regarding things Tarot. It was an irresponsible thing for the writer and editor to allow into print.
You would think anyone who is open to the energetics of Reiki would be open to things like Tarot.
Edited to add: I just emailed them with my complaint. Here's a link to the article online:

My suspicion is that the comment says a lot about the ignorance and narrow mindedness of the writer, and very little about us.

The 'hand-washing' bit is missing from a copy of the article that I can access. So my email to the editor was as follows:
Dear Editor,
I really had to smile while reading your article "May The Force Field
Be With You", when I read:
"But what really got my attention was that so many of the Reiki
masters I read about were also registered nurses--sensible women with
superior skills, not flaky tarot card readers."
I'm sure that many nurses are indeed sensible women with superior
skills - although what skills and what they are superior to, your
journalist omitted to say. And I'm sure that some tarot card readers
are "flaky" although that isn't a designation I would personally use
of anybody.
It does seem a shame though to single out tarot readers as an example
of flakiness. Many tarot readers are thoughtful, sensible people, who
believe that using tarot cards is a way to look at a situation from a
new perspective. Many follow the ideas of Jung concerning archetypes.
Some use tarot cards as an adjunct to other counselling practices and
may be highly qualified in that field.
How about an article on the "non-flakiness" of some tarot readers to
redress the balance? I think that your readers would find it
interesting.
With all good wishes,

"flaky tarot card readers"
So does anyone know where to find this "flaky tarot".
It's not on any of the online stores I know of...

I guess that the Flaky Tarot belongs on one of the "Bad Ideas for a Tarot Deck" threads that were active on the forum not long ago. The Flaky Tarot's main flaw is that the cards keep disintegrating mid-reading, which annoys the reader mightily and is quite unnerving and distressing for the querent. ;)

This made me laugh and also got my fur up!
I just shared a booth at an expo with a nurse Reiki Master.
And she did wash her hands, albeit with wipes, after every person! >g<
Half the people who came to my booth for a reading were nurse Reiki Masters, and none of them even gave an encouraging nod to my roommate.
Oh yeah, and none of them asked me to wash my hands or felt the need to check me for flakiness.....

Well, since some of us are e-mailing our displeasure with the article, myself included, there might be some future mention of tarot card readers in a more positive light! Now wouldn't that be nice!

Ah, yes. That would explain why they're no longer being sold aswell as the fact that there are none sold on ebay..
Though y'think it's the former flaky tarot that are being used as fanning powder?
If they were to flake finely enough that could work.
I can see the discovery of it in my mind..
The Flaky Tarot has finished disintergrating and lies in a powdery mass on the table so the reader takes out the old and rugged backupdeck that she really did not want to use what with it being so sticky and worn.
After the first reading with it, the cards seem to shuffle easier, and it gets easier by the reading. The powder that gets on the card has made the surface less clingy. And now, the entire stock of the Flaky Tarot has been shuffled to "fanning powder" and is being sold in magic stores all over the world.
:D

Maybe a Flaky Tarot deck would self-destruct at the end of every reading, like the old Mission: Impossible tapes....
