LWB Surprises!

Umbrae, please close your ears and eyes, since I know you may not have access to all of those LWB's for your decks. })

In general, after I read through the LWB that comes with a deck, I move forward and occasionally refer to it. What I have come to notice as I explore various decks in this, my beginning stages of Tarot study, is that, occasionally, I am pleasantly surprised by at least part of what I read for a particular card.

For example, I always look first at the meanings for

Three of Swords
Ten of Swords
Five of Pentacles

These are a few of the ones that I usually find are too "negative" or similar in interpretation for me. I'm not saying that I disagree with some of the aspects of distress some cards can present. I just want a broader prospective:

So...the other day, as I read through the LWB for the Bruegel Tarot, which gives all of the meanings in the form of Proverbs, I found a couple of gems: (Please dont' take this to mean I love the WHOLE LWB...I am just finding little treasures here and there and asking you to share some you may have found).

Bruegel:
Quote:

Three of Swords: (Pain) Great pain is silent. (Those who truly suffer don't tell anyone how much they suffer.)

Five of Pentacles: Courage. Loss. Those who wear armor hang the harness bell on the cat. (Those who must fight leave silly things at home).

Morgan-Greer Tarot:

Quote:

Three of Swords: Sorrow, delay and disappointment. One who chooses power over emotion.
(Like the last part)

Quote:

Five of Pentacles: Spiritual warmth comforts those suffering financial or physical hardships.

I own the Bosch and like the Bruegel, the LWB descriptions (and cards) are very different from the RWS concepts, the new approach is fresh causing surprise :) in the Bosch LWB card meanings are traditional proverbsm, maybe also for the Bruegel.

Loved the 5 of Pentacles from the Morgan Greer!

I do not tend to refer to the LWB with any particular deck. Infact, there are some of my decks that I have never looked at the accompanying LWB.

But...

There have been some exceptions...

I do like the Bosch LWB. And the Fournier LWB is also fairly useful.

The Secret Tarot LWB is also very interesting; it includes the story of the land of Secrets, which I found to be quite helpful when using this deck.

I'm not anti-book, but I hardly ever use the LWBs per se...so I may be missing out on stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Also, love yer signature line!

S.L.MacGregor Mathers wrote a little book, before he went
completely off the deep end with the Golden Dawn crowd.
I think he gleaned most of his divinatory meanings from
sources such as Levi (who mostly borrowed from his Granny).
But, of the 5 of Pentacles he wrote:
"Lover or Mistress, Love, Sweetness, Affection, Pure and
Chaste Love. Reversed: Disgraceful Love, Imprudence,
License, Profligacy."

That's the kind of "mining" I was looking for, Fulgour.

I don't "use" the LWBs. I first look at certain cards. I always read them through, then I put most of them in a group together. I just think that some of them have some "gems" of difference within the meanings and was curious if anyone found any "gems" they liked.

I like "power over emotion" for 3 Swords and I always like to see "spiritual comfort" as part of 5 Pents. Thank you for sharing this one.

I liked getting the game rules....I just got Flornoy's print-out on that as well, as part of my order of the Dodal and Noblet decks.

I got the Tarot Balbi a week or so ago, and all there is in
the world is the fold up lwb ~ and this deck is complex!
Funny thing is, it's just nice to have ~ the cards "speak."
