Hello all,
Just wondering if you ever picked out cards for people without their knowledge, involvement or request.
I've been doing it but I'm wondering the tarot ethics of it!

I put this into a similar thread that brought up this topic: I had a problem with someone famous. Suffice it to say, when the only way I could get answers on the situation was with the Tarot, yes, I did *spy*. It's a matter of why are you interested? Since I was being *really* put through something for many years by this man, I felt no compunctions about going after whatever info I could get on him. So that's one answer.

Oooohhhh you see it as spying, hmm that's not great.
I do it just because I don't have very much confidence in my skills but want to work with the cards. I've no idea if they're being accurate or not so it's not the best to learn anyway.

Well, he spied on me to get my phone-number - he was calling me & hanging up on me - or just sitting there - for YEARS!! Several different #'s. I don't think it's exactly spying - I'm just afrait that that's what *others* would call it. That's all I meant. :)

I don't normally do it because I don't have much interest in peering into others souls (unless specifically asked or paid for by them). The only exception would be if I were having an on-going problem with them-then I don't see it as "spying" at all-just trying to understand thier point of view.

In order to learn, you can do readings for yourself, a daily 3 card reading and see how those cards appear in your day. Another great way to learn is doing readings about your past, you already know your previous decisions, solutions and worries, so you can see how the cards describe them today.
You can also offer readings in the "Readings exchange" and let everybody know if for practice and you need feedback to learn.
Recently I posted this thread hope you find it interesting if decide to take a look.
Edited to correct the link.

I did when I first learned to read. Back then, I was in high school, and I was trying to think of ways to practice reading. So I did readings for favorite celebrities.
I didn't really think of it as "spying" since the only items that I'd have had any familiarity with, and could verify, were ones that were public knowledge anyhow. (I think that was part of why I chose favorite celebrities: so there'd be some way to check at least some of the results against things I knew or things that might appear in the news in the future.)
Ditto for news stories, which was another way that my friends (also in HS) and I got a lot of reading practice. Again, though the people involved in said news stories were total strangers to us, the only parts of the readings that we could verify were the ones where corroborating information was appearing in the news anyway. So it's not like we were knowingly unearthing information that we had no right to pry into; these stories were already public knowledge, and so were any parts of them that we could identify as having come up in our readings.
Having said all that: do I perform readings on NON-public persons without their knowledge or consent? No. I wouldn't be at ease doing that, unless what I was actually reading about was a SITUATION that directly involved either me or the person asking me to do the reading.

You and Danubhe were ahead of your time! recently I saw a magazine for teen girls and have Tarot readings sections for celebrities, those are not the best readings in the world but certainly connect very well with the content of the magazines.

Celtophile, you sound like you've a very interesting story there! Please don't think I was judging you as a 'spy', I was just taking it personal with regard to my original question.
Flavio, thanks for the tips, I'll give them a whirl. But your thread left me out in some other website altogether.
Celeste, what a good idea for understanding people you've issues with, pity I didn't have tarot around in prior spats.
Shelikestoread, another good idea and good way of checking if your skills are working.
Thanks guys

I have a horrid habit of 'spying' on friends by doing readings about them because I am nosy like that. They know I do this from time to time and if they have a problem with it I don't do it.

I spy to study or learn for myself. I do this when I am having trouble with people or a situation I don't know how to handle.
I think about the cards and then wait to see what comes to pass.
Great learning device.
BUT... becareful
what you send out will be return.
I use it for self knowledge only!

I only think it is *spying* if that is your intention. I read cards for people without their involvement but I don't think of it as spying. Im not really trying to learn their secrets, im just trying to see how they are affected by things that happened between us. Since I only do this when I am somehow involved, it's like an extension of a reading I would do for myself.

Yes, I have an interesting story - thank God it's finally *over*!! But as to Tarot 101: I have an interesting case right now. I work at a library, & we get to know everyone in town (the place is *tiny*!! :) ). A girl came in who was telling a story about how her brother disappeared: they know who he is with, but not where he is. This reminds me of the beginning of that Angelina Jolie movie, wasn't it called "Killing"? This kid has some kind of hold over the brother; the brother wouldn't *ever* normally run away, do anything to get in trouble, do drugs, etc. But he is obviously being coerced into cooperation with the jailbird he's with. This might be interesting to take to the readings board - in fact, I think I will! Well, we profiled a serial killer there, & that's the kind of thing where it's *definitely* acceptable to do such readings. Off to the Readings board!
