I had the strangest dream the other night. I can't remember it all but at one point, the sad man in the black cloak from the 5 of cups (RWS) was standing behind me and put his hand on my shoulder. It felt like this heavy, melancholy weight had settled on my shoulders.
Has anyone else had characters from tarot appear in their dreams?

Yes, but not specifically like that. If I were you I would meditate on that card to see what message that man(in the black cloak) has for you. It must be for some current situation in your life.
My tarot dreams have included having people I know in my life whether causually or not, give me specific cards telling me to emulate them. I've also had a dream where I walked into an antique shop and seen a large painting of the Devil card. I think I was shown it this way because I always get nervous when I get that card in my readings and was too scared to meditate on it for a long time.
I've also read tarot spreads in my dreams (I guess they were for me because the cards flipped over by themselves.)
I had halluncinatory tarot dreams when I was given Demoral on a hospital visit also.
I've also had scenes playing out where for example, the five of wands would come up at the end, like a capsulisation of the dream.

That's interesting. I've had people ask me to read for them in dreams too, but there was always something not-quite-right about the cards or the way I read them, but I guess that's just normal-dream-strangeness.

Edited to add: Thanks, I'll take your advice on meditating on the meaning of the black-cloak man, celeste.

I've had dreams that involve tarot - I've always dreamed in kind of a story/movie format and in several of them I've either been a tarot reader as part of the story, or tarot has been involved in some way.
I also had a dream once about a specific tarot deck, the Witchy tarot, that had been getting very mixed reviews, and in my dream one of the cards came to life and said something to the effect of "Lighten up, don't take us so seriously!" with the appropriate eyeroll, LOL.

Didn't think I'd post this because I thought you would all think I was going mad (I've been there a while now, it's not so bad:joke: ) but I'll post it anyway!
Remember at the beggining of this thread I mentioned a dream where the man from the 5 of Cups (RWS) came and put his hand on my shoulder? Well it seems he's always somewhere behind me now, in the shadows. Not in a scary way, just as if he's watching me. I've had this feeling a couple of times now. What does everyone think? I'm not going mad but I think I've gotten this card stuck in my head and I'm not sure why or if I want to get rid of it.

The man in the five of cups represents a part of you, just as every card in a spread you do for yourself represents a part of you. I really think you should take this card out and dialogue with
it. I think he has an important message for you that you haven't gotten yet. Or sleep with the card under your pillow and try dream incubation. Before you go to sleep ask what message he has for you and to tell you CLEARLY. Try it for a few nights if nothing happens right away and see what happens.
I get the Temperance card frequently in my readings for myself (Ineed to practice balance and moderation in my expectations of myself and others I think.). I slept with this card just once and the dream blew me away. I spent several days after pondering its message. Other cards arn't so prolific. Since this one seems to
be coming up-try it-it can't hurt.
The other thing you could do is a spread asking what message it has for you. I'm sure you would learn something interesting from that too.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thankyou Celeste~ I'll try that. The only problem is, it's hard to dialouge with it because the man on the card is facing away from me! Worth a go though. You're right- I need to work out what this card is trying to teach me.

Why didn't I think of that?
Thanks,

He will still answer you even if his back is turned.

I did a three card reading last night to find out what the significance of this card is.
1. Why the character from this card is in my thoughts
2. What he symbolises
3. What he is trying to teach me
While I was shuffling the 2 of Swords jumped out.
I drew:
1. 4 Pentacles reversed
2. 3 Swords reversed
3. Queen of Cups reversed
I think the 4 of pentacles is pointing out that I the fear loss and pain that this card stands for and the reversed three of swords symbolises the deep heart ache and prolonged pain that this figure stands for.
I've always though of the Queen of Cups as a really weepy, depressed person, so mabey this character is there to tell me not to be like that~ I get hurt and upset very easily by people close to me and have been lately.
The jumping card (2 swords) is my need for balance, peace of mind.;)
Thanks for the idea to do a reading about it, Celeste. :)It's cleared alot of things up. Do you have any thoughts on this? Anything I've missed?
I tried sleeping with the card and ended up having dreams in which my mother came to terms with my interest in tarot and asked me why it interests me instead of just condemning it as "silly"~ something she would never do in real life.

It sounds to me that you are having trouble leaving the readings on the table so to speak. When you are finished reading, do a mental ritual that regrounds you or cleans your aura or something to get rid of the others worries and thoughts.
When we read, we open ourselves up to the querents worries and fears, afterward you need to let their troubles go.

Thanks Ace, but it was more of a personal reading that I "carried" the card with me from.
Good idea about trying to "let it go" after a reading, though. You're probably right- it is hard to get rid of the thoughts I pick up during a reading. I'll try some sort of mental ritual as you said after involving readings in future! :)
Thanks,
Raeven

It's sounds to me like your reading and dream work around this card struck some sort of chord in you whereby you realized how hurt you were by your mother's attitude regarding your interest in tarot. To me that was what the two of swords was about:You are sitting between a rock and a hard place. One part of you doesn't want to go into the murky waters of your unconcious. You might find unpleasnt feelings towards her there. The other part of you wants to stand up for yourself and your beliefs. This is an uncomfortable place to be.
Maybe you were not aknowlaging how much this hurt you out of loyalty to her. I'm not you so I can only guess. Only you know the answer to that. I find when issues come up in a reading or dreamwork and they hurt it's like a sting at first and It takes awhile sometimes to process what I've learned about myself.
I know with the Temperance dream I was in denial with what the dream was trying to tell me for a week, then I thought "ok, I am like this". Just accepting it was work but brought me peace ultimately.
I think you've done some hard work here. Isn't it funny that the man in the black cloak pursued you until you aknowlegded him and what he represented to you in your unconcious. It's funny how tarot works sometimes.
You can choose to pursue this further with more dream work on the same card or let it go for now if you've had enough. I think the most important message was given to you. Congratulations!

Thanks Celeste! :)
Might let it go for a while now~ more dream work will take it's toll, my mind is screaming at me to give it some real sleep. LOL :joke:
