A new pack.Tarot of the Imagination. After a time does one only buy a pack if there is a frission an electric spark ( not picking one up in monetary terms on e-bay cos cheap!).I now have to have a sense of excitement a sense of electricity to acquire a new pack as I feel I need to be emotionally attached to it ( I keep them downstairs in suitable "homes").Question -- Do you need an emotional reaction to add to your collection and what is the feeling? When you pick one what do you need to feel?

I know what you mean Gareth.
After having what I consider a large collection I have managed to get it down to a size which is more realistic (?) [well... better than it was anyway :d]. I find that I am being more particular in my likes and dislikes now. That means that I have to have either a 'click' of some sort with the artwork, the theme or an interest in the story behind the deck before I consider it to be added to my collection.
It's so hard being strict with myself though...

Feeling the same over here.
Mainly, I go with some specific themes. But there is a few tarot that I had acquired because I really liked the artwork. The aesthetic is pretty important to me. I must like the deck.
When there is excitement over one deck, it's the best sign!

Picking and adding is indeed very different these days than it once was.
I have looked at a lot of decks in the last couple of days, just because I have been in areas where there have been a lot of tarot shops and shops selling decks.
When I look these days, it is not often that I am ever interested in new packs, unless they have some significance to where my interest in tarot now lies. My interest has grown more in the areas of the ancient italian decks and the Marsielles decks, so when I add, if I do, it has to be something that helps my knowledge of those kind of packs grow. I have really enjoyed my Thoth deck in previous months, but on the whole, the older cards with non-scenic minors are the ones that are working for me. I hardly ever look at modern decks and have pretty much said goodbye to all RWS imagery - I did trade recently for the 'Gay Tarot' (which is great), but generally, that is a 'one off'. After losing a card from my Soprafino (which I have still not found), I picked up the 'Ancient Italian', which is great and feels very warm. I also have the Grimaud as a consistant partner as I love the courts, which I studied in some detail after receiving it.
When starting my tarot journey, I was open to pretty much anything, but now, things are much more specific. It may sound silly, but I don't feel content with the more modern tarots and enjoy working with decks that have an aged feel. Since I have little money these days, I am quite pleased that a lot of newer decks do not interest me as much as they once did and that I feel I have all I need in the reproductions of the older-styled ones.
Not sure if I have answered this post correctly. It just came along when I had already started to feel this way. As much as I respect everyone's desires for their chosen decks, a lot less decks inspire me than they did. Of course, the Tarot is something that is within us, so what I read from an older styled deck is no more significant than what another reader reads from a modern one. I think that what I am feeling is probably something that a lot of people go through after a number of years of being exposed to a lot of decks.

Thanks for the feedback. Its just that Ifind the reason one acquires a new deck interesting.I must say I can only now do so if I can see myself reading with them.I once met someone (in fact my first and possibly my best reading with me as the querient) whose cards were so well used and well so old that they felt very different.I commented on this and she said it was the oils from her hands (and no doubt other hands!).They had a sheen that made them feel thicker than the original card they were made from. One day I hope my Morgan Greer pack will feel like that!

Yes, Gareth; I understand your last post perfectly.
I would love to have a worn out old deck that I put put a lot of time into and had gotton a lot back from years later; showing it's age. I am pretty much staying with the decks I have got now so that one day, I will have that same feelings. Lovely description and something I am looking forward to. I am trying to not aquire any more decks so that one day, I will have that kind of relationship with hopefully, just the one.
