do tarot cards suffer mental blocks like people sometimes do.
as in when you are doing a reading for someone, but it doesnt make sense to you or the person you are reading for...
if so how do you handle it?

As a reader, I'm not sure that I have to initially understand the story that I am providing to the querent. My first task is to read the cards and frame the story in an open-ended manner such that the querent can respond or ask for amplification. The cards say what the cards say.
Its only after the question (if there is one) and the first pass at the reading ocurrs that I believe a reader can feel at a loss. This probably happens most due to the question and the reading not seeming to match up. When this ocurrs, the reader can ask a question -- "Do the card's story, as I've expressed it, address your question or is there another question that was unasked?"
Dialog is important at this point. Some who ask for a reading are smug and private, they don't want to initially express a concern but are more interested in first establishing your capability. This is shallow on their part but common. Dave.

I always say.
"Please just take that with you because the energy may need time to manifest itself in the days or months to come."
And I feel a sense of excitement for them, because tarot has given them a little glimps into the future.
Sometimes they come back a week or a month later and they're all bubbly becuase the meaning opened up to them and they understood it in a way that they never would have if they wouldn't of had a reading.
But I first take the route dadsnook described.
Sadly some people do hide the real concern just to test you.

I have had that happen several times to me. Once when reading a person on rather heavy doses of Prosac (she said she couldn't drive on it, it make her dizzy or something, THAT heavy. They don't prescribe such large doses anymore, I think). I picked up the cards and couldn't make out what they said! "OK," I thought, "here is the Fool, what does that mean?" in the end, I gave her the meaning of the cards, but not any real information. I just couldn't see it!
This has happened since, usually with people that don't really want to get read and block you out. One was a TV news guy, doing a story on the psychic fair I worked with. He sat down for a reading, and I was getting stuff, then suddenly all I could say was "this means ...." but no information. He had shut down when he saw it was REAL. Don't judge them, they are frightened, but you might say something to them if you deem it appropriate.

Oh ya Ace that is so true!
Or people who come for a reading after they have drank alot.
It's like looking into a black hole.
Some people get very scared when you hit on a truth they have kept hidden.
And shut the energy flow off between you.

Absolutely! And very irritating. They wanted to prove it didn't work. Well, it does. LIVE WITH IT!
Astra gave me a good suggestion for dealing with drunks: focus on their hand, and move back down the askasic record a few hours to before they got drunk. They still won't be able to understand the reading too good, but at least it will be accurate!

That is so funny!
Well I'll try that.
Usually at that point I just do the reading for my own amusement since they are weaving back and forth in the chair with a silly grin on their face, nodding at everything I say.

There are two people in my life that my cards just refuse to read for. The readings come out all scrambled and confusing over and over again for these people, and I can make nothing out of the cards. I have yet to try a different deck with these people, to see if that makes a difference, but Im not going to fret it. If my beloved decks just don't *like* these people, then that is their perogative.

It may be them, it may be the cards or...... it may be YOU. How do you feel about these people? are you too close to be able to read them well?
The key here is if someone else does it and they get read fine, it may be you. If others can't read them either, they are blocking.

I agree that it could very well be my own energy blocking the readings. But I also believe that it is impossible for tarot readers to *connect* with everyone on the planet. I think some people's energies just clash and don't work well together.
One of the people who I have trouble with is someone I love very dearly and whom I have a good relationship with. However, he does not believe in tarot. He asked me to read for him in the past only because he knew I liked to read and he thought he was doing me a favor by offering himself. I think it is very possible that his disbelief in the whole thing blocks my *sight* when I read for him, because I know he isn't really all that interested in the first place. And, like you said Ace, maybe it is just because we are too close and blocks are put up unconciously out of fear.
The other person I have trouble reading for is someone I don't know very well. An aquaintence I guess you could say. This is one of those situations where I believe it is just a clash of energies, a *bad*chemistry, though I don't mean that in a negative way. Like I said, I just think there are some people you will not connect with, no matter how good a reader you are or how open/closed they are to the reading.

I can see that. I know someone exactly like that: She is a very private person and I have never been able to read her. the cards simply made no sense when I tried. I just was wondering if you have some perhaps unacknowledged negative feelings about them. The original message that I responded to had a slightly angry tone (TO MY EAR) but I have been wrong before.......I think......once.....maybe. ;)

I could never read for men I was romantically involved with, or had a crush on. Mostly because I was afraid the reading would be biased, but also because if I was not in the cards for the person, I would be hurt, and my cards never wanted to hurt me.

Nope, no negative feelings with either of them, though I could definately see how that would impede a reading! :)
