Well I have had 4 people so far give me money for readings. i don't even charge! They were strangers and were just recommended by a couple of friends. Even some of my friends book a reading, and will exchange it for a gift, taking me out for lunch or whatever.
Although I don't charge, I will still accept whatever is given. It's like a donation, or exchange. I find my readings are more insightful. We have to learn to receive as well.
They have all given $20 which is fine with me. It's like the universe has set the price. I'd rather do it as a donation for the time being, until I feel that I'm alot more experienced and can put a price on it.

The first reader I ever went to had people pay what they felt the reading was worth to them. She did business in a vegetarian restaurant in San Diego, called The Prophet. This was maybe twenty-two years ago. I think I paid her $5. I like this method, as a customer, though I'm not sure it's practical for anyone who hopes to supplement their income with Tarot. Anyway, I appreciated her willingness to do that, since my income was rather meager at the time.
I seem to recall that the reading was accurate. I'm remembering the theme had something to do with my career, and I did get a major upswing in the job department, as she predicted, very soon after. But I sure don't remember the cards. I was brand-spanking new to Tarot, then. I think she used the 1JJ Swiss.
Phoenix Rising, you must be doing great readings, if you don't charge and people still insist on paying you. :)

Well they seem to be very happy with it. I'm also very friendly I give them a cup of coffee and they all give me a big hug. Also I say to them if there's anything specific they want to know, to just ring me and I'll take a quick look. I don't look at them as a paying customer, but new friends.

I was recently approached with the idea of reading at a local coffeeshop, and I explained that I was uncomfortable charging for readings (especially because I read there for free so often anyway). They're setting up a small room that would be easy to "decorate" for readings, etc., though, and seem to think it would draw in business.
I think that I'm just going to put a tip jar out and people can leave what they like. I would be at the coffeeshop anyway, writing or reading, so it's not a huge infringement on my time.
Has anyone seen this setup before?
xoxo,
Sea

i think it's a nice idea to ask people to pay what they think the reading was worth. I think i can understand why a 'free' reading as opposed to a 'lucrative' reading would give better results too. I think it's nice that there are people around like you guys who are kind enough to donate your time and energy and resources to help someone else in their life :)
