A reminder that this month's Tarot Meetup Day is Sunday, November 14 at 3:00 pm, your local time. Perhaps your locality has a group with sufficient numbers for a go-ahead.

Looking forward to attending the meeting in Montreal. There will be three of us from Ottawa meeting up with some o four Montreal area members...

For those not familiar with Canadian geography, Ottawa is only about 2 hours from Montreal, well worth the trip for the vast richness of cultural and shopping exeperinces we just don't have in the Nation's Capital.....

Yes, I'm looking forward to meeting up in Montreal.

À demain!

:) Bring money. Before the meeting, we'll be hitting some tarot stores in the Plateau and Quartier Latin areas.

The meeting itself is being held in a Metaphysical store if that interests you at all....they have a vast selection of Tarot decks AND they have binders full of pictures of cards from different decks...if I'm not mistaken there are at least 3 big binders up in the book section of the store...that's where you will find the decks too although they keep some behind the counter too...
I hope you enjoy the store...it's one of my favorite places and you get such a sense of serenity as you walk up the stairs to get there.

Hope I can make it...it's still up in the air for me yet.

OakDragon  13 Nov 2004
I've been thinking of going to the one in Jacksonville, but only one other person has RSVP'd so far. :(

ah...you should take a vacation next month and come freeze your butt off in Montreal or Ottawa...wouldn't cost you much with the exchange being what it is.

Indeed, but my favourite Montreal tarot store haunts are the ones on rue St-Denis (in the Plateau and in the Latin Quarter).

WhiteRaven  13 Nov 2004
hmmmm..I'm trying to place where you're talking about...St Denis near deMaisonneuve has a NewAge Bookstore that carries decks...
Then there is that one on Grandpre...or something like that...never been there YET...emphasize "yet"...Sun Tarot has zippo as far as I'm concerned...Wyntergreene usually has the listings...you're missing a great but small store in the West Island called Tresor Magique. They have some and can order just about anything you can think of and it doesn't take long to come in...

WhiteRaven  13 Nov 2004
Ottawa is very limited as far as I know...I know of one Metaphysical store on Dalhousie? That's where I bought my Ex her Medicine Cards a couple of years ago...can't think of another place...is there another store in Ottawa like that?

Rusty Neon  13 Nov 2004
WhiteRaven ... I like Librairie Nouvel-Âge on St-Denis in the Latin Quarter. There is Le Valet, Boule de Cristal and Biosfaire on St-Denis in the Plateau. I think Biosfaire is closed on Sundays now. As well, there are lots of used bookstores all along on St-Denis but I won't be visiting any tomorrow.

Are there any other interesting stores (besides those and Mélange Magique) in the central core of Montreal to check out?

I wouldn't mind that, actually, but I can't afford to take time off from work. I visted Toronto, ah, let's see, 3 years ago, I guess for the first RushCon. I fell in love with Toronto immediately. It's a wonderful city. I've been trying to find an excuse to move there. Immigration ain't the easiest thing in the world, though.

WhiteRaven ... The store to definitely check out in Ottawa for tarot decks is Sunnyside Books, a metaphysical bookstore in the Byward Market area in Ottawa. It has in the neighbourhood of at least 70 demo tarot decks to browse through and copies of them and other decks are for sale. However, the stores on St-Denis have decks, from France, that Sunnyside doesn't have.

Oh Man...if you fell in love with Toronto I wonder what you would feel about Montreal...Montreal is unique..and it's Summer's can't be beat. It's such a diverse city...it's amazing...and this is someone that fell in love with the West and is moving there...but will always have roots planted here in Montreal...

I'll keep that one in mind...the one I'm speaking of isn't far from the market either...wonder if it's the same and I'm just getting the streets wrong...hmmm

I can't think of any other centrally located stores of interest other than the ones you mentioned...WAIT...did you mention Charme & Sortilege...
4933 de Grand-Pre
One block west of St Denis, corner of Blvd St Joseph

Rusty Neon  13 Nov 2004
WhiteRaven ... The store on Dalhousie is called Crystal Dawn. Sunnyside Bookstore is at 113 Murray Street, about 2 blocks walk.

I've never been to the store on de Grand-Pré. I should check it out. I need to find boul. St-Joseph and de Grand-Pré on the map, though. :)

WhiteRaven  13 Nov 2004
Just walk up St Denis...you'll cross it. Plateau area

annik  13 Nov 2004
For the few times I got to Le Valet d'coeur, it was more for books on D&D games and also looking for an anime as a gift. The tarot corner had a few interesting decks (got my tarot of the cats people there). I didn't found a lot of tarot deck there but maybe I didn't had a good look (and now, I know a bit more about collecting decks! lol).

And I think it is a very bad idea to go shopping for deck, especially so near christmas. I wonder if I will be able to have an hold on myself! (-:

WolfyJames  14 Nov 2004
I won't be shopping with you guys, I'm broke! I bought three sibillas this month and that's enough. As for the shops here in Montréal, I think you know more shops than I do. ;) I try not to shop much. Easier on my wallet. ;)

Yet another reason for U S citizens to flee to Canada ;)

I agree there are many shops here, and due to our language (French), we get easy access to Tarot de Marseille decks and books on them as well. I got a Hadar for Punchinella a few months ago, simply took it from the bookshelf of a bookstore, as simple as that. I heard it's very hard for Americans to get it, and Punchinella is Canadian, not very far away from here. I think though that Tarot Garden recently got the Hadar in stock. It must have made many happy.

annik  14 Nov 2004
Yes, we are lucky to have access to these easily, WolfyJames. And now that I have my Giger tarot, I don't have no tarot deck that I Really want to get. But I know that if I start to look at tarot cards, I may go on impulsive purchase. which may not be a good idea for me so near christmas! I want some money left for my christmas gifts! lol

Cerulean  14 Nov 2004
Five that met last month met again, this time in the Peninsula Bay Area, closer to San Jose than San Francisco.

I really enjoyed seeing people's picks: someone brought Lisa Hunt's Shapeshifter; another brought Joseph Martin's Quest, the Fantasy Showcase, and A. Caselli's Art Nouveau; someone brought her art tarot cards as a gift; and I brought Jane Lyle's 22 cards/78 cards, the Vachetta and Druidcraft. The Druidcraft made a big hit--three of the five really loved the bigger size, the beautiful paintings and the Celtic feel to the symbols. One student who does astrology and tarot liked the Quest's comprehensive feel.

Lots of things were brought up, but it seems the beauty of the Druidcraft and the Swords courts in the course of the discussion made me feel happy...the large cards made an impact and Will Worthington's art really shined.

Regards,

Cerulean

I couldn't make it today...maybe next time

annik  14 Nov 2004
It was fun! There were great people with a variety of marvelous decks!
Of course, there is always the chance to meet again. If it wasn't this time, it will be the next time!

Rusty Neon  14 Nov 2004
It was a wonderful day in Montreal; a sunny afternoon in the Plateau :); it was great to meet the new folks in Montreal :); I got ahold of a used copy of Edmond Delcamp's _Le Tarot initiatique et ésotérique_ [sitting there waiting for me where i left in the summer in the store] and a new copy of the out-of-print Kalevala Tarot deck :).

WolfyJames  15 Nov 2004
Annik brought her Giger Tarot and I was finally capable to see it for real. What an awesome deck! And not as weird as I thought. Another deck to add to my wishlist.

Rusty showed me his Tarot de Marseille decks, one Conver and I don't remember the other one, but they were both pretty. Obviously, spending time with the Fournier has made me a softy towards Tarot de Marseille. Who knows, I might get the decks he got at some point. ;)

It was indeed fun and I'm eager to meet you guys again! :)

SongDeva  15 Nov 2004
3 of the Mass Tarot Circle (massachusetts) met on Sat. 11/13.
We'll meet again in December, with a possible Weds. night or two thrown in.
We're accessible at meetup.com as well: http://tarot.meetup.com/211/

We welcome any and all levels of knowedge/no knowledge, and all types of readers. :) Plus we generally meet at Borders where there are books and decks and treats to be had. :)

Sunnyside is definitely *the* place to go in Ottawa for anything Tarot related - very large collection decks and they can order just about anything in.

However, on Main Street, right next to the Green Door Restaurant, is "Singing Pebble Books" and it is very nice, too.

There used to be a place in Kanata called "Pagan Playground" but I can't find it the phone book any more. It might have closed down or gone underground, as it supposedly had a large supply of magic supplies, a la the store we met at in Montreal yesterday. But I can't confirm...because I can't find it....

Alta  15 Nov 2004
Yes, it was a fun afternoon. I was very intrigued to see for myself both the Giger and the Gothic (Vargo).. thanks annik and WolfyJames for bringing them.
I got a copy of the Ukiyoe and a Heron Conver TdM, which was interesting. Plus met some of Montreal tarot group. Thanks for setting it up!

WhiteRaven  15 Nov 2004
The name rings a bell...I'm going to have to check out the other two places mentioned in this thread when I get out to Ottawa.....both places sound like they are near the market and that's where I usually head first when in Ottawa..."Curry in a Hurry" can't be found here and Montreal and their sandwich/whatever they call it....the chicken tandori onen (sp?)...is delicious!

Hi SongDeva ... With weekend meetings and weeknight meetings, your group is definitely an active one. :)

Hi WolfyJames ... Both of the Marseille decks that I brought were Conver patterns. The first one was the Héron Conver. The second one was the one from the "Tarot Set" which you can get at Chapters/Indigo Bookstore in the "clearance/vente/rabais" section of the store for $14.99 CAN. The ISBN number for the deck/book is ISBN 0-7537-0714-4. The book is RWS-oriented and therefore isn't useful for the Marseille, but $14.99 is a good price for the deck.

Thunder Bay Press / Lyle "Tarot Set"

The cards look brighter in person than in the scans.

Personnally, I liked looking at the Heron Conver TdM.
The Ukiyoe is quite nice. I must admit that I like more the art of the Ukiyoe than reading with it! lol
I can't wait for next time and to be able to see the Gilded!

WolfyJames  15 Nov 2004
Thanks Rusty for these informations, I will definitively check out that deck, at that price, I'd be a fool for not taking it. :)
