I suppose it depends on how fancy you wish to be or if you have a specific material that feels best to you...personally I prefer either cotton or a light canvas because everything else just seems to slip slide around. The best and easiest spread cloth I have come up with so far is a simple cotton bandana. These can be found in many different stores.
I picked up a bright pink tie-dyed bandana from Hobby Lobby for less than a dollar and it has been a great spread cloth for me! :)

vhrsn: Welcome to Aeclectic Tarot!
A material with a texture or nap to it such as felt, velvet or velveteen may work.

I picked up some black velvet in the remnents section really cheap and its been a great cloth to spread and lay my cards out on. I also made myself tarot bags out of it aswell, all for 50p

I made recently my first spreadcloth. I wanted to use black felt but when I went there, I fell in love with a cloth with a cute Halloween motif on it, with witches and black cats. I found the cloth to be too thin though, slipping around, but I decided to buy it anyway and to buy the black felt and to put it under it. I hate sewing so I bought a special glue to glue the borders of the cloth, then I glued the borders of the cloth and the black felt together (the felt being under). So now I can enjoy the cute Halloween motif and have the thickness of felt, and the cloth doesn't slip around.
