**NOT** counting Family, Work, and Friends.... what hobby or interest do you feel competes the most with your tarot time? Is there something you enjoy (*gasp*) doing more.. or something that just competes with the time you would otherwise devote to Tarot. .. perhaps readings certain books, or drawing, or painting..
I know we are all busy and enjoy many interests.. I'm just curious to see what may cause one to put down the cards.
For me, lately, it has been knitting. I am finding this to be my main hobby (while I am a true beginner) and I am turning to it first lately.... I suppose things just go in cycles sometimes...

Oh now dolphinprincess.. you are no longer a beginer.. you have been at it for more than six months now if memory serves me.
For me it has been knitting too that has pulled from my tarot time.. I have been busy for months getting ready for Christmas.
All of my co-workers are getting a hand-knitted original (meaning I do not use a pattern) scarf from me for Christmas.
Plus a little crocheting has been thrown in to boot. After crocheting, my hands can barely shuffle that beautiful huge new DruidCraft I just got ;)

LOL - Okay, I'm not a *true* beginner... but I have only made scarves.. ..granted, lots of them! There are so many beautiful yarns out there.. I have had more fun designing simple scarves - like you, I find that they make great gifts!
But, I'm finally trying to 'advance' my studies and learn some more complicated items.. so I guess I still consider myself a beginner. I have trouble with those patterns!

A year ago I would have said needlepoint.... but now... it's reading..
If I'm not reading cards I'm reading books. I go to the library every two weeks and pick up 6.
Other than that it would be trying to keep my house in some sort of order, there seems to always be something to do or someone to tidy up behind!

I am studying a lot which demands a lot of my time. I have also resumed tapestry making in the last two months and have managed to finish two tapestry cushions and begin another. I try to do at least half an hour every day. I also try to fit in tutorials, a part-time job and an exercise class as well as normal every day things like housework (boring!).
Of course, demanding children goes without saying ;)

It's the opposite, I'm afraid, with me. I'm a writer, and I find that Tarot, and all my other interests, pull on my writing time, which too often suffers from a fragile ability to maintain my focus.
I love needlework, such as knitting, embroidery and handmade lace. I also love drawing and watercolor. Books take a lot of my time, and my spiritual reading, which I do for pleasure as well as serious study.
But really, I have to confess, the pull is more toward Tarot than away from it. :)

Personally, when reading the cards there are often times I pick up some really funky energy...mostly when working with those I don't know very well...bouncy type energy that just won't settle...I put the cards away and go for a long walk outdoors to reconnect with Mother Earth and to reground myself in a very physical way...sometimes I won't touch them for the rest of the day...I'll work on some sort of "earthy" project or I'll come back down to the almighty "practical" world for a spell...it's often needed. Reconnecting is very good because when you come back for a fresh reading you, yourself are "freshened" up in a very real way...something like re-energizing your crystal quartz only you're doing it to yourself. You have to admit that not all readings are all happy happy joy joy and for the most part when someone asks you to read it's because they have an issue...issue for me equals negative energy...

Writing stories...which has been waning recently. TV - I'm sure in some ppl's minds this doesn't qualify as a hobby, but I'm something of a soap opera and classic TV fan, recently re-discovered Amerian Movie Classics and Turner Classic Movies (the latter seems to be better these days, somewhere along the way American Movie Classics became a commercial station and Turner seems to run older stuff...even if I have issues with Ted Turner LOL!). Not to mention my obsession with Court TV. My newer job has "normal" hours, which results in my free time being even less, so I have old Twilight Zone tapes sitting there collecting dust...but thanks to AT it's easier to spend more time at least thinking about and talking about Tarot, even when I'm not in a position to read.

I'm in graduate school, and I have tons of stuff to in so little time. There are also the household chores and other family responsibilities which take up a lot of time, but which I love to do. There are times really when all I could do is just merely glance at my cards, or just shuffle them, no readings. I do my best not to neglect my tarot studies with my "earthly" studies.

For me it is the online 'trial' versions of Slots
I get to win and lose without actually spending any money at all.
Great fun, and surprisingly this is taking up more of my time than initially anticipated.

For me, it is knitting too, before this I had a phase of doing a lot of crocheting, I made a lot of tarot bags and cushions. A few big ones that go on the floor and smaller matching ones on the couch.
I also just like spending time outside, I try to find time to go for long walks where I can go to my favourite spots in the forest and see how they are changing with the seasons. If I don't have time for that I often go to the garden with an excuse to "play with the cats" - they don't really need me there, it is just an excuse for me ;) .
And I am reading Ann Moura's Green Witch series; I also have fiction books lying around but somehow I can't get into them right now.

I put on standby my japanese language studying activities (school and practice at home) until beginning next year because of my Tarot course, I'm not worried because I've been studying japanese the last 6 years so taking a break for a couple of months will not cause a great effect (I hope so :D)
Another activity put aside because increasing time for Tarot is reading, I used to read a lot of fiction, classics, SF and other themes but now the only reading I do is Tarot related material, at least I keep the reading habit...

Nevada and Shalott, you're writers, too, huh? Me too, although this last couple of months has been so hectic I haven't gotten much done. :D
Reading sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, romance--pulls away from Tarot time.
Demanding kidlets, too. :) And hubby. I think sometimes that hubby has a low-grade sensitivity to pschic energy because no matter how engrossed I may think he is in a computer game or tv show--let me pick up my cards and get halfway through a reading and Bam! Here he comes, to see what I'm doing.

Writers? Wonderful! In between school and dancing and violin and reading and writing (rather pathetic) fantasy adventure which is most of what I read, too, there's just (Shock!) hardly any time for tarot!
Oh, and I forgot exams. Did I mention I have exams? Evil exams!!! })
If only there was more time!
