How we met

Hello.
Although this isn't my first post, I thought I'd tell this little tale, as a kind of introduction!
It is about how I met my Thoth cards. & I was wondering how you had met your decks?

It was the beginning of January, 1984. And it is snowing! I am fast asleep dreaming that I am being led down a dark corridor. I'm wearing my nightdress, & have a long pink ribbon tied to my neck...I cannot see the face of the person leading me, I can just hear him laughing.
Anyway, we come to a hall, like a school hall...all the curtains are drawn & it is dark inside. My ribbon is tied to a post, & I understand it is to stop me floating away!!
Three figures approach me, a man, a woman & a hooded figure. The man wants to get rid of me, but the woman says no, & the hooded figure points to the floor.
I look at it and realise that I am standing upon some curious tiles. the women whispers to me "This is where we play chess" & then I'm aware my guide has returned & is laughing at me again!
I start to float upwards, tear my ribbon away & of I go into space, wake up hearing the laughing!!

So, that day I am shopping & come across a stall selling fake moustaches & itching powder. But there is also a deck of Thoth cards, & I've heard of them, but never seen them. (I've had the Rider Waite deck a few years). Something compells me to buy them , although I'm worried about Alastair Crowley (!!). When I open them up, I see the tiles of my dream floor on their backs, in the little booklet I read the words about chess, & I recognise the Fool as my laughing guide!

This was accompanied by dread & I wanted to throw them away! It took me days to pull myself together & look at them without superstition!
Then, the first card I pulled was the Princess of Cups 'here is snow' & I looked out the window & so it was! That was the final hook & I was caught!

How did the rest of you meet your cards?

Well, I'm a fan of film, so I eventually stumbled upon the works of Alejandro Jodorowsky. I became a fan of him, so it was only a matter of time for me to get some of his books. In two of them he spoke a lot of Tarot, mentioning details about some cards, or using them as examples of what he was talking about at the moment. I wasn't really interested in it, tho.

Then one day, by some odds of destiny, I met a stranger at a local market. It was an old man sitting on a table, with a Tarot deck by his side. I have no idea what drove me to ask him if that was in fact a Tarot deck - I wasn't really interested in it - and the man said that yes, it was, and that I could have it if I wanted it. Now, I have a lot of theories on why he wanted to give the deck away, but none of them really convinces me... but anyways, I didn't say anything, but I involuntarely nodded. So he stood up from his chair, handed me the deck with a smile, and walked away. I've gone to that market several times since then, hoping to find him, but nothing.

So, without really wanting one, I found myself with a gorgeous Marseilles deck, as restored by Kris Hadar. Something in the back of my head told me this was not a coincidence, so then I started getting into the subject. Just a few days later I found this forums, and now I'm here, reading a lot and trying to learn... and to see if I can figure out why this deck landed in my hands.

I think that's a very beautiful story, thanks for sharing it.:-) All I can tell you is that I have always found that kind of experience in my life profoundly beautiful, and it has never scared me at all. Quite to opposite, I find it awesome when that kind of thing happens, just stunningly stunningly beautiful.

To me that is how the universe (or call it G-d if you like) communicates with us when it was a message it needs us to see. I love knowing that we're not alone. Knowing the universe is there to help us when we need it, to protect us from making mistakes, and doesn't let us miss out on things that could be profoundly important in our life. I find it really comforting.

Anyway, to answer your question, from what I see most people seem to have been led to Tarot from some kind of prompt from the universe. :-) Me too, and Tarot was definitely what I most needed at the time when I found it.

I was in a rather large emotional crisis at the time. I was at a crossroads with a very important issue in my life and I was totally unable to decide what to do. So what I was doing was going online every night and doing the online rune readings at facade.com. About 50% of the time, the answer kept coming up the same. The Runes kept saying that I was "misunderstanding the will of G-d". And it was like I knew there was something wrong in my attitude, but I was not sure what. Then one day, on that site, there was an ad for this site (AT) and I read up on Tarot cards, and I just felt a big jolt inside, a knowledge that I needed to get some Tarot cards and learn how to use them.

And the rest is History. I came on AT, found the deck with the artwork I most loved (My first was the Haindl) and they have been much much more to me that I could have ever expected. BTW, my first few Tarot readings told me the same as the runes, that I was misundertanding and was ona wrong path. But it did not take them long it explain to me what I needed to change, and the more I follow the changes they suggested, the more positive the results of my readings have become.:-)

I'm with you, your getting that deck in that way was not a coincidence. These things never are. You were meant to have it and to learn Tarot and there is something you were meant to learn from it that is imporotant in your life.

When the time is right, you will see something Tarot did for you that changed your life in an important and positive way. That your life would have taken a different path without it and then you will know why.:-)

What a great story, tzuki.

Mine is rather a short tale;
one night while browsing the tarot database on the site, i noticed there was a LOTR set around. Being a bit of a LOTR afficinado, I thought to myself, "oh, i've got to have it...i MUST have it!!" of course, i didn't hold out much hope of finding it, owing to my town of residence. About a week later [id given up hope of ever obtaining the thing...yeah, i give up quickly :p] I happened to be shopping in town with a friend when we went into the bookstore, and lo and behold, there was a copy of the LOTR deck and card set. Not only that, the box was a little damaged, and the sales assistant was kind enough to give me a $20 discount, which meant I had just enough to buy it!! I was so excited when i saw the deck, i litterally screamed, and my friend thought it was hilarious... i was rushing around like an idiot, telling her not to put it down, hold onto it while i go to the ATM across the street... I was reaaaaallly happy about that deck!!

I don't think my story is quite as interesting as some of yours...

I got mine at a young age...I was 13, I believe. I'm not sure...horrible with time, really...

But I hadn't really thought about tarot much. I'd heard of it before, but for a long time, I didn't even know they were real. I'm still not sure when I realized they were in fact something I could get, but my mother came home unexpectedly with the Mythic Tarot set.

I personally find that strange, because my mother hates anything that seems odd, and I hadn't even brought them up to her. So for her to go out and buy them for me, for no reason...That's a little strange for her (and she still can't stand them, so I giggle everytime I think about how she's the one who got me into them in the first place).

The rest is pretty much history. The deck and I didn't get on all that great at first, and so I bought another deck (as I had suddenly found them all in Barnes & Noble) and learned how to read on that one. About a year ago, I brought out The Mythic Tarot to use for some Samhain readings, and it worked beautifully.

And that's pretty much it.

From what I can see your story fits in perfectly with everyone else's. There seemed to be something out of the ordinary in everyone's experience. In yours as well, with our mother doing something so uncharacteristic of her. These are the times in life when you see the hand of fate, it was something we were all destined to do. There was something we each needed to learn from it, and when fate/destiny steps in and sends us what we need for me I always find that beautiful.:-)

Which deck is LOTR? I presume the "T" is for Tarot. :-)

LOTR--Lord of the Rings, one of the best fantasies of all time written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

As a major LOTR fan, I have to say that the deck is a poor exploitation of the movie images, when it could have been a fabulous tarot deck, true to the mythic qualities of the books.

Wow, all these interesting stories. My first deck was a gift (RWS) but I never got into them, and gave them away. Later I bought a Universal Waite and a Mythic deck and started using them, but only a little bit.

One day I found the AT site, and discovered the Golden Tarot. Finally I found a deck that suits me perfectly, and within a week of using it I had phone calls from people asking for readings. I guess that a big YES from the universe heh.

I've gotten a couple decks since, and have studied them, but the Golden is still the one for me.

Oh, I know!!! *giggles* I am actually surprised when I run across someone who doesn't know what LOTR stands for. Or FOTR, TTT, ROTK for that matter (the abreviated titles of the three books of the trilogy). Lurea=Tolkien geek.

I got my cards because a book told me to. :) Once I'd moved away from home and was a little more free to explore my tendencies toward 'alternative spirituality'... I started reading a book called "Positive Magic" that recommended getting Tarot cards. Since I was working in a bookstore in the Heartland at the time, I secretly ordered them, found a friend who wouldn't ask questions to ring them up for me and took them home. They were RiderWaiteSmith cards and I still have them, seventeen years later. :D
