Hi, I've just introduced myself on the newcomings thread. I went on a 6 week course to learn Tarot before Christmas. It was the first class the lady had done and although I did learn quite a bit, all but about 4 of us just wanted to have their readings done and not really learn. She taught us that swords were emotions, cups love, wands work and pentacles money but when I read the booklet with my cards (Tarot of the Ages) the meaings are different. This is a bit confusing.
We did readings for each other and mine were usually quite good, but a lady came in on the last evening and I did two readings for her and they were so accurately. I didn't think I had learn anything as I didn't practice much so was very surprised-just went with the flow really and the answers just jumped up at me. My major problem is that I have no one to practice on-what can I do? I don't go work due to disabilities and only have one friend who believes in Tarot. I've joined the free class on this site.

Hi Silver Falcon,
Well I've only been doing this for only 8 weeks too. I tend to see cups as love and emotions, swords as the mental intellect and thoughts, pentacles as the practical (i.e. finances, health and day to day things) and wands as passion, creativity, fire and energy. But then its all down to personal interpretation of the reader.
You're actually ahead of me cos I haven't done any courses yet. I've signed up with TABI to do their online one and can't wait for that. You will learn a lot from being on here, I feel I have. I'm sure you will find lots of people to practice on and swap readings with here. And if you want to do your self-readings you can always post them in the "Your readings" section and ask for help with the interpretation to see what others come up with.
Ooh and I've just noticed your favourite deck is the one I have, Tarot of the Old Path. Isn't it lovely. I only have the one deck at the moment, but my wishlist grows ever longer!!
Blessings

I've usually understood Swords to be words and actions, Cups as emotions, Wands as living life and Pentacles as material goods and acquiring them (though there are exceptions here and there). But maybe her deck was set up a bit differently, each deck does have some learning curve to it.
You can practice here. You'll need 25 postings to ask for a reading, but I don't think you're required to wait till you reach 25 of them to actually give a reading--so go ahead and offer to do some readings here on the board. There's a 'readings' section after all & you'll get some good practice.
Have you looked at the learntarot.com site? They run a free course. There's a new one up every 2 months or so over at the Barnes & NOble bookstore's site also which is free. And don't forget Thirteen's meanings up on the main Aeclectic Tarot site (click on the logo name in the upper left hand of the screen, you'll find her stuff there - www.aeclectic.net/tarot/basics is the url I think).
Be flexible, there are multiple meanings and shifts in meanings on the different decks, lots to learn! Some decks are more different than others and though many things do overlap, not all of it does.

Welcome to AT Silver Falcon,
Spend some time reading and joining in on the Forums. After you have 25 posts, you can exchange readings with others for practice. Good luck.

I am 4 weeks into the TABI course. I can't praise it enough. The group in strictly limited in numbers (unlike the Barnes & Noble course, which had about 8 million people doing it at once!!!). The tutors / mentors are very dedicated and make you work!!!! It's a great way to learn.
Regards,
Ian
