Can anyone give a fair assessment of how to arrive a timeline or time span within a reading.. I have been asked before "how long do I have to wait". I attempt to use my senses and feeling.. but sometimes find it difficult to get a reasonable asessment..
many thanks to all..
hugs.

I don't think it's possible to make an accurate prediction of time with Tarot... instead of asking time, maybe the question should be about possibilities. You know, not "when am I going to get a promotion?", but more like "do I have any chances to get a promotion whitin the next year?" or something like that. Then you see that the event may or may not happen depending on how the person acts or approaches the situation. But well, I don't think there is such thing as "fate" or a prewritten design for us. If there is, then what's the point of doing anything at all? If my fate says that I'll be married next year, I could just as well sit on my bedroom day and night, and then something will magically occur and I'll find myself married, without any effort from my part. No, I think there's countless possibilities forming at every second, and it depends on us which one we should take. Tarot might give us a pretty close depiction of what our life may be if we choose on this or that possibility. But predictions? I don't think so.

Now, if you already know the consultant has possibilities, you could Zen them a bit and teach them to grow some patience :) Like that guy who went to learn the art of being a swordman, and he asked how long would it take him to master the art. "10 years", the master said. "But that is too long!". "Then it'll be 20 years!". If he asks again, add another 10 years, and explain that without patience, we can't really archieve things, specially on professional fields.

That's just me, of course. You're more than welcome to disagree with me or think I'm just babbling nonsense in here.

What is "time"? Clocks, calendars -- these are tools to mark events or passing segments of time (non-events) against a measuring scale. But, time in terms of achieving something may not be linear like a clock or calendar.

Let's look at the question, "When will I get a big promotion at work"? Now, let us look at what has to happen for that to occur. 1) You need to fulfill your responsibilities and get a good job review when that occurs -- typically, once every six months or even yearly. 2) You need to been seen in a larger role -- this can occur by going to school or taking training in a specialty area or by assuming a special task or volunteering for a project or by making a practice out of helping others. 3) You have to be recognized for this added achievement. 4) There may have to be a change in the organizational structure due to increased sales, movement of personal higher up on the organization ladder, key people leaving and which need to be replaced, etc.

So, with all that said, how do you tell "when"? Easy. You first design a spread that recognizes/includes these general "steps along the way" as well as some other helpful cards such as "what do I need to prepare for being recognized for my abilities" and "what type of opportunity should I prepare for". When you do the spread and lay out the cards you will get answers that are appropriate. Then, all you have to do is keep track of your progress and the progress of events that move you along the steps you have laid out. It won't give you a future date, but it might just show you your rate of progress and what remains to be done. Then you can judge "when" you'll reach your goals.

Dave.
Edited to add: Of course, Astrology is an excellent timing device, as good as tarot is in terms of answering specific questions.

In some spread such as the Celtic cross, the future and outcome positions are read as time also. Major arcana means there are things still changing around, cups are days (when next to pentacles) or summer, wands are weeks or spring, swords are months or fall, and pentacles are years or several months (more than swords) or also winter. Court cards mean it is in someone else's hands. In the celtic cross i changed the 9 positions to "what you have to go through to get to result" and that is also a good indicator. If you do a cover spread where you place a card on top of another one for clarification, this may also add to time accuracy. Ex, If future adn result are two wands cards, a cup card, and a major, i would say something happened in either summer or spring (querent decides which one is correct) and after you go through major, result may be in summer or spring (whichever was not used). Hope that helps, remember that when depends on if they do it. If you ask when you will win the lottery, you are given a time, *but you still have to get the ticket*.

Time lines...if I'm thinking that something is going to happen in the unforeseeable future, it seems to happen about as soon as I get my cards put away. Other times that I think it might happen fairly soon, and have a long wait. I gave up trying to do time readings, and concentrate more on what I need to do, more introspective work rather than when something will happen.
Look at the cards and see what astrological correspondence it has, it might be a person with that influence or maybe something will happen under that influence. Honestly, I don't know.

Oh ick. I hate timing in readings, but so often people want to know "when" I try to explain, as nicely as possible, that time is fluid, there are so many variables that can delay things, or bring things sooner, and it's difficult to really guage time. Spirit perceives time differently than we do. A thousand years is like a day sort of thing...
