what people have near their decks

I'd be curious to know what people keep on the table they do their reading, or whereever they do them.

I have a green tablecloth, reminds me of nature, a scented candle that I light when I do a reading, a stone taken from a beach in the country, a wish pyramid (little glass pyramid with a door in the side that opens, you put your wish in there and read it every day for a week of so and then burn it and it is supposed to come true) AND this one I invented myself, tell me what you think of this:

I keep a compass on my table where I do my readings. Symbolically, it represents my moral compass that I always want to keep track of when reading, and as the needle points north (north as upwards, as heaven) it represents what I hope to connect to in my readings, a power beyond myself. Just got that last one recently.:-)

And of course all my decks are there. :-)

Hello SunChariot

The compass sounds like an effective symbol for staying on course. It reminds me most of all of the althiometer in the Philip Pullman trilogy of novels His Dark Materials. The althiometer was like a compass, but moved according to a form of spiritual energy, resting its pointer on the various archetypes. It is a very close analogy to the Tarot itself. There is a picture here: http://www.bridgetothestars.net/images/alethiometer.jpg, courtesy of WolfSpirit's research.
A smaller picture with descriptions of the 35 archetypes is located here: http://www.randomhouse.com/features...eter/index.html

I keep my cards in wooden boxes and/or velvet bags near the reading table. The table is covered with what I call the purple-blue velvet "fabric of the Inner Beloved" which has special significance to me and is the backdrop to my website title page and to my avatar, under the dagger and rose. I always burn incense when reading and light from one to three candles. There is a small shelf above the table which acts as a kind of altar for the candles and incense, but sometimes I place them on the reading cloth. I treat reading as a sacred activity. :)

Blessings

What a great question! I have become much more ritualistic in my readings over the course of the past 6 months; I now keep 3 stones near me when I do readings. One is a purple stone that says: "dream", the other 2 stones were gifts created by an artist friend who gave them to me at my father's passing last March. One is purple and marbled with the saying: "No Journey is Alone"; the other is mystic blue with purple and gold and it reads: "Peace be with you." In addition to these stones, I burn incense and light candles, and have some of my celtic crosses around my reading area. One thing I am enjoying is the ambience I have created in the room where I do most of my readings. The walls are deep purple and I have surrounded myself with art that is sensual and mystical. I have found that making a special environment and creating the right setting has helped me get into my readings. It certainly feels more spiritual to me, which I find greatly rewarding.
Blessings,
Indigo Rose :)

I'm having one of those Rosanna Rosanna Danna Days. When I first saw this thread, I thought it said what people do you have near your decks and wondered why anyone would keep people near their deck unless they were someone they wanted around or to read for and many other laughable thoughts, and then I looked at the post itself. Uhhh...never mind.

I live in a small house, so everything is near everything else. So my pillow is next to my decks on the bookshelf/headboard, if they were any closer I'd be sleeping with them.

Wow, I really want one of those alethiometers. LOL To bad it exists only in books.:-(

I'm with you on that, reading is definitely a sacred activity for me too.

Don't worry we all have those days. LOL

I keep my decks in the evolving diorama of my tarot cupboard (formerly the linen closet), and they have spilled over onto a bookshelf, where they are surrounded by books.

The decks I keep by my computer for daily draws switch around but they are kept company by the "Extended Characters & Values" chart for keying in ASCII characters on my numeric keypad. I know, the anticipation of needing to consult that in conjunction with a daily draw is exciting, but wait. . . next to that I've got the chart "How the Time of Day Differs Around the World" which shows time zones and cities around the globe.

If that isn't enough for the cards, they can read my print-out called "Strengthening Your Creative Resolve." I also have a thesaurus, dictionary, and dictionary of quotations on a stool by my computer so the cards can hop down and decide if they are feeling "churlish," merely "ungracious" or simply needing to be fed peanut butter.

At the minute, the Phantasmagoric Theater Tarot is opting for the peanut butter option, but they want none of that icing sugar whipped jazz, they want the organic stuff, and they get surly, rude and hard to manage if they don't get the real deal.

Oh look, it's 16:24 in South Africa! Somebody's deciding whether to feed the kids peanut butter sandwiches for dinner or whip up a festive salad with chick peas, feta cheese, lettuce and green olives with pimento.

And I draw the the Nine of Swords. Yikes, you don't want that kind of decision hanging over your head, feed the children the peanut butter sammies, no matter what time it is.

There is no relevant quote about peanuts to add, but that dictionary does come in handy.

This is priceless, Darwinia, starting with the "the evolving diorama of my tarot cupboard"...

I read on a light to medium blue cloth I have 3 votive [unscented] candles arranged in a triangle to my right for ambience, along with my Tarot journal---When not in use I have a velvet lined carved box which holds 6 standard decks. To "cleanse" the cards I keep a pyramid generator handy. I let a deck "rest" on the generator for approximately 2hrs. I do not use incense or scented candles because some clients are allergic.

I am currently keeping my primary 6 decks in a leather, business-like, zip-up bag. It makes them easier to carry around, especially when I was doing readings professionally about a year ago. Also in the bag, I keep the books associated with the decks along with my recent purchase of "Forest of Souls" by Rachel Pollack and perhaps some loose change hehe. Oh, I also keep a poetry and tarot journal with some spreads in it with the books. Hopefully I'll have an opportunity to tote it around to more psychic fairs, etc. in the future!
