buying your own deck = no-no? huh?

I've been fascinated by Tarot for a while, but I've just now found a deck I think I'd click with. (Amazon says I'll have my Secret Tarot in 3-5 days, whoopie!) My friend has had what I believe is a standard Rider-Waite deck for some time now, and since I just don't connect to a lot of the symbologies of it, I went deck shopping, poring over the various decks out there obsessively. Some of her friends into Tarot apparently found my search for a perfect (well, no deck will be perfect, let's say compatible) deck appalling, as, according to them you should never purchase your own deck, or at least should never purchase your first deck. Huh? Sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me. Anyone else ever heard of this or the reasoning behind it? You'd think with all the Tarot users and collectors on here, if that were true, tales of woe and disaster would abound by now if it really were bad luck/karma/whatever to purchase your own deck.
(And technically my aunt bought it anyway, since I used the gift card she gave me, so nyah nyah :P)

There's that old rumor, I know, but if you had to wait to be given a deck, I don't think I'd ever have gotten into tarot. I don't know anyone who would ever in a million years have gotten me a deck. Enjoy your deck and don't worry about it. :)

Horse puckey. While a deck given in love and/or friendship can be very special, it's certainly not a requirement! I've heard that, too, and I have to say that all the decks that I have bought for myself read are just peachy, and we have a rapport that's just as good as the decks I've recieved as gifts. In fact, when you buy for yourself, you can be sure that you get exactly what you click with--very important! :)
I just got the mini-Secret Tarot (as a gift, LOL, but it was a request of mine), and it's gorgeous and deep and rather dark. You're going to love it! You may want to have a 'lighter' deck, too, but that's just my opinion.
Welcome to Aeclectic and the world of Tarot! :D

I think this superstition comes from the fact that decades ago decks were not easy to buy, so you HAD to wait till one was handed down to you. At least that is what I read somewhere......

There's nothing wrong with buying you own deck whether it be you firsdt of 50th. I've bought all of my deck and never had a problem with any of them. Most of the people I know would have gotten me one.

Yep, I've bought nearly all of mine too, including the first one, and Im fine :o)
Just realised I didn't explain myself- I was just saying where I thought it came from, I don't believe it :o)
You buy your decks and enjoy them

I don't believe it either; I'm mostly curious as to where this superstition came from. I've even heard that you shouldn't tell your own fortune because it's terrible bad luck, but uh, I'd be dead by now if that were true! Or is it ok with Gypsy Witch cards but not Tarot? ;)
I've collected online images of each Secret Tarot card and keep drooling. I can't wait for the physical version to arrive on my doorstep. Maybe I should have chosen an expedited shipping method... but I'm cheap. ;)
I almost bought the mini version because I have tiny hands, but I realized it was even smaller than playing cards. Is the mini still workable for you, Stregaverde? I might just get both versions eventually.

I've always bought my own, until my son gave me the Morgan Greer deck today! He obviously knows me very well, as I loved it as soon as I handled it.
However, I think it is just an old myth about other people buying them for you.
As someone else has said, I would never have had a pack (until today!) if I waited for someone else to buy me one.

Forgot to ask in my last post, can anyone recommend a good book on this lovely deck? I know it derives from the RW but the images are in a different perspective. Can I just interpret them as I would the RW or should I get a book specifically on MG?
I'd appreciate anyone's help with this.
Thanks.

HI Sue
if you just enter Morgan Greer in the search box on Amazon.co.uk and look in Books, it should have a book on there I think......

Cagedflame, it's pretty little to me, but then I'm a fan of big decks. I can still riffle it, more or less, and I like the mignon size for carrying in my purse. Easy to do a spread on almost any surface with a mini-deck, too.
I was surprised at how dark and edgy this deck was, but then I tend towards 'gentler' decks, so others might not find it so sharp. You're going to really like it, I think!

Oh Cagedflame, I forgot to say, have a look at the thread on this page re; beautiful tarot bags. You'll be drooling after those too! And don't forget the spread cloths!!!

Knowing me I'll probably get the mignon one too, then sell off whichever I find harder to use. Stinekitty is teh cheap.
That's a good price for tarot bags made from cotton? I should start making them then... There's a fabric store near me that sells amazingly gorgeous silk brocades and iridescent dupionis.

This discussion pops up with every crop of newbies!
The statement is a load of dog do-do! Buy whatever deck you want yourself! The Sun will not tumble from the heavens because you did! LOL!

Enjoy your deck! If your friend is really worried, say that it was a gift (from yourself!). I have received a few tarot decks as gifts, and they don’t work any better or worse than the ones I bought myself. The only reason I got those decks as gifts is because I asked for them. When I got my first tarot deck, I told my brother I wanted one for Christmas. I didn’t know till I read the little book that came with it, that I was not supposed to buy it myself (although it never actually said why....).
Where did this (and a myriad of other nonsense) come from? Who knows. I’m sticking to my conspiracy theory, that in the olden times the people with tarot cards wanted to keep the knowledge to themselves so that ordinary folk couldn’t do their own readings (for free), but have to keep paying these charlatans. :)

I suspect the rule that you cannot buy your own decks was created by the partner of a tarot-holic.
Picture him saying "honey, I know it really is necessary for you to have 388 different decks, but it might be bad luck to buy your own. For your own good you should probably wait for someone to buy it for you. It's not that I don't want to spend the money...." ;)
This is fact could be a good solution for gambing addiction.
A NEW GOVERNMENT CAMPAIN: It's bad luck to place your own bets!

Nice one smilia! LOL
I've bought almost all of my decks and haven't falled out of my tower yet...
It is beautiful to be given a deck as a gift, though (mostly because gifts from friends are beautiful things and partially because it means I don't have to buy the deck myself :D ).

Another good reason to buy your own decks and stuff all that "decks should be gifts" rubbish: Has anyone here ever tried to exchange a deck they received as a gift but didn't take to? It's much easier to try and find someone to trade or sell it to, trust me!

I think this myth might have some background in the difficulties in getting hold of a deck way back when.
In that time, having one deck must have been pretty great, and having a second was probably unusual..
Also, consider the societal structure. There were "apprentices" for just about every job and these were chosen by the masters according to the skillset and interest of the apprentice, and ofcourse also according to the masters oppinion of the apprentices possibility to succeed.
I think it was the same with reading tarot as with everything else.
If someone who knew how discovered you and gave you a deck to initiate you and then taught you everything you needed to know, you'd know it was the right path for you.
Whereas if you got a deck on your own and had no mentor/teacher you were probably not very well versed (unless you gained a good reputation over time and started taking on apprentices of your own eventually).
. . . Just a few thoughts . . .

I bought the Toth Deck and as I soon as I looked at it, I knew I wasn't going to get on with it. My best friend was there when it arrived, and she immediately fell in love with it. So I gave it to her. She didn't seem to mind and has used it successfully since!
