I am also fairly new to the tarot and have only been reading since New Year's when I got my deck. However, in the past month and a half, I have come to realize that it is a powerful tool for unlocking the subconscious and guiding you to a decsion, not in telling you what to do. Remember that you can change your future and you can listen to the cards or not listen to them. They can help point out things that you hadn't thought of before or make you look at a situation from a different perspective. It is up to you to take that information and apply it to your situation. Perhaps the reason the cards are showing so much confusion is because they are reflecting the confusion that you feel inside. I know that when i'm feeling down or upset, I get the most confusing readings. Try doing a reading about career when you feel calm and realzed and arent' stressing about it and see what they day. I bet they will be a lot more responsive and give you a clearer idea of the direction in which you want to be headed.
I have been drawing a daily card since I got the deck to start learning the cards and reflect on their meaning and they have so far been pretty accurate indicators of where I am in my life. I suggest that you start doing the same thing and realyl reflect on what the cards mean for you. Be patient and your wisdom will grow, they will take on personal meanings for you and help guide you.
I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes with the reading when you are in a calm state of mind.

Since this is about reading in general, and not a specific reading, I am moving it to Talking tarot.

I highly recommend Putting the Tarot to Work by Mark McElroy. There's a lot in there about exploring your strengths and options, and it's all tailored to the career/business world. I believe the book is available on his website www.tarottools.com.
I personally feel that asking "will I/won't I" questions is you letting something else pick your path for you. Of course, it's easy and if you fail, you can always blame the tarot. But it might not be the way that you'd be happiest taking. Also, "will I/won't I" usually doesn't tell you how you got to that outcome, and that's useful information to have!
Tarot can definitely be used for helping with careers! Don't lose faith. Maybe there's an option out there that you haven't thought of?
