Hi, Free Flight. There was an interesting thread on this subject some time ago -- here's a link: Tarot Pronunciation.

It's supposed to rhyme with Pharaoh, isn't it?
Try this as a tongue twister: Parrot ferret carrot pharaoh sparrow arrow tarot (and please, don't anybody make that deck!)

Not so much that they swore that it was pronounced that way, but when my friend asked me how my Tarot (and she pronounced it ryhming with carrot) was doing I did not even understand what she was talking about. LOL Didn't connect the two, she had to tell me "You know, the cards!" I had no idea what she meant when she first said it. LOL

That's the way I pronounce it too, but I imagine like any other word people in different places have different accents.

Sorry didnt mean to start a thread already covered *blush*
I was asked pretty much the same thing as Sun Chariot the other day and it made me giggle, thought I was onto something original when I was posted.
I am Australian and I prounounce it more to rhyme with arrow than pharoh as per all australian-isms we are lazy in our pronounciation.

Here in New Zealand if you said Tar- row you would be speaking about a polynesian Vegatable taro. If you said marrow tarrow you get it out like a Kiwi. I have heard British persons say Carrot Tarrot. I have heard Tarocchi pronounced Tar -Row- shay. But we mangle words here Try our 'Glass of Mulk and Fush and Chips"

Well there you go, something interesting. I'm in Canada. Over here arrow rhymes with pharoah (and Tarot) :-).

Maybe the sylable was switched down under? Ta ROW? TAY row? TUH row? TAR oh?
I say it TAR oh, myself. Like arrow and pharaoh (and sparrow and narrow, wheelbarrow...time for coffee!)

Interesting too that both Tarot and Faro are card games.

Unknown horrors are creeping behind you, my phoneticians!
Here in Japan, we pronounce tarot, not only with final t, but adding it with vowel o; tah-roh-toh. Of course we can consult respectable English-Japanese dictionaries and find the word "tarot" and its pronunciation "tae-rou"--with Japanese definition "tah-roh-toh cards, 78 cards of Italian origins ...". And imagine, 120 million Japanese are pronouncing Tarot as "tah-roh-toh" every day and night, ignoring any linguistic advice from native speakers...And my confession -- I myself pronounce tarot as "tah-roh-toh" for the easier communication. Well, some things can be very complicated in Far East...

That seems kind of odd. It's the first time I've heard an English loanword (or any foreign loanword, for that matter) be adapted to Japanese based on its spelling rather than its pronounciation.
Thanks for mentioning that, by the way. Languages are one of my primary interests, and Japanese is one of the languages I'm learning. I've marked it into my dictionary for future use, in case I forget. :)

I pronounce it as TAY row though, but it is just me.

Shouldn't it be tah-roh-koh? (for consistency, in view of Italian origin)?
Anyway, I daresay Europeans, Antipodeans and North Americans pronounce all kinds of Japanese things in a way that sounds very funny to you ;)

HA! This is such a cute thread!!! I have always wondered how to pronounce this in English! Down here we say Tah-Rot (with the emphesis on the ROT part, yes yes, like in rot, pot, dot.....(*lol*), the same way in Danish, although then the emphesis is on the Tah part.....this is so funny, I have enjoyed reading how you all pronounce this around the world!!!! :)

I pronounce the 'a' in the word Tarot kind of like the 'a' in the word tsar, while the 'rot' part kind of rhymes with the word dot. I can't help it if that's the Flemish pronunciation... (When I speak about the Tarot de Marseille, however, I use the French pronunciation.)
By the way, is it just me or does pronouncing Tarot so that it rhymes with marrow sound like a VERY English way of pronouncing a French word? (I once heard an American pronounce 'Parlez-vous Anglais' - ouch :D!).

Another Australian here!
Tarot rhymes with barrow, so get on yer wheels, eh?
If we went to a private school we might say TAR oh or ta ROH.
The "eh...." is Queensland dialect! You always say "eh" or "ay" after a phrase in Qld.
And in Queensland they probably take a few seconds longer to get it (Tarot) out than we Victorians. Hehehe....

I pronounce it "Ta-ROH"
the a as in "cat" , and the emphasis on the second syllable.
