I am currently renewing my acquaintance with the Soprafino decks and using them in conjunction with Jonathan Dee's Tarot - an illustrated guide.
He says
Medieval Italian tradition suggests that if the Fool is the first one out of the pack then the question you are asking is probably the wrong one. It may be that you are asking it for wrong reasons or that you are mistaken in your initial assumptions
So what do you do if the first card out is the Fool? Do you carry on regardless or do you get the querent to ask another question?
BTW - For those who don't have a Soprafino deck - GET ONE NOW! They are just exquisite and work so well with this Jonathan Dee book. I am having a wonderful time with the two at the moment.

As I'm not a medieval Italian, I don't follow this recommendation. As a reader who trusts the tarot to speak truth, if the first card is the Fool, then I see it as pertaining to a new path, an opportunity, perhaps, and see what other cards turn up to give more details.

i've read that in a couple of places too, but never had it drawn myself, I would probably continue or just take note of the reading and then do another one to ask for more understanding, or ask the question in a different context. I generally do readings for myself and close friends, so I guess it owuld depend on how you and the querent feel. hope this helps. :-)

I say - like The Fool - go with whatever feels right for you. If that has meaning for you, then follow it but make sure you follow it every time you do a reading. Make that decision and step off the cliff on your wonderful Tarot journey:)

When the fool is the first card out, I treat it like I would any other card. I don't believe in asking the wrong question or asking questions at a wrong time. If you feel the need the ask, then it is the right time. I think that it is important to listen to the questions in our hearts and heads because it is that curiousity that leads to wisdom. In fact it is the curiousity and the wonder that difines the fool. We should not be afraid to answer questions who might be undesireble itself or to which we do not want the aswer. When the fool comes up, it asks for curiousity.

I belive that there is a reason for everything when it comes to the tarot. And what you believe or dont believe plays a big part of it. If you truely believe that if the first card you pull is the fool, that it means its the wrong question. The fool will make his apperance when needed. It seems that, that sugjestion is pretty "old school".
Like for example, Querent cards. I dont use them, some people do...
Its all a matter of wether you believe that it works/helps/whatever.
The tarot shows you what you need to see and bends itself to your thoughts, and shouldnt be the other way around..

That's really interesting, Jewel-ry! I had never heard that before. I guess that it works like the moon void of course in astrology. If you're casting a chart to answer a specific question, then it's invalid if the moon is void of course. (I hope I'm remembering that correctly.)
Since I had never heard of discarding the reading if the Fool was out first, I had never considered it. I always just read it as part of the spread, and the readings ended up going well.
