Cups I think usually has to do with emotions, issues of the heart. I usually see swords as challenges, wands as work or spiritual issues, and pentacles as money/finances.

Paring it down to the bare bones:
Cups--emotions & feelings, matters of the heart & soul.
Wands--living life, your actions and day to day matters.
Swords--words & the actions that happen directly because of them. A lot of Swords are what's happening in the immediate stress filled lives we run.
Pentacles--money, possessions, and the things we do to acquire them (jobs, skills, planning).

I usually think of them as mind (Swords), heart/emotions (Cups), body/material matters (Pentacles) and spirit/ambition (Wands). I know there's a bit more to it than that, but this is just how the suits generally come across in my own readings. Just my 2 cents' worth. :)

I see:
Cups - Emotions, love
Swords - Action, strategy
Pentacles - Manifestion, material things
Wands - Ideas, 'what you do' {many people list Wands as 'work', and I think that is too limiting}

Cups=family-friends-new friends-feelings
wands=work hard-play hard
swords=retribution for the above wands
pentacles=what makes your world go round

A lot of repetitions here but;
Cups - The emotional part of life. Relationships, feelings, even instincts to some degree. What goes on inside of us rather than more practical aspects of life.
Wands - Actions, doing something, acting and reacting. Being on the move and keeping things moving. Instincts on deeper levels, the "Id" coming out to have a say. Fast reactions and energy.
Coins - The physical world. The body, the world around us. Physical labour and a clear earth-connection. Reep what you sow, what you begin in the physical realm will grow and evolve. Slow and steady.
Swords - The intellect. Thoughts, plans, strategies. Cutting through the fog to get to the heart of the matter. Analyses, contemplation, meditation. Logical responses to things that take place and finding patterns in how things work. Aquiring knowledge and experience through processing information.

I think it depends quite at what suit do you connect with what element.
To me it is:
cups = water = I feel; I got to the heart of matter slowly like water under riverside
coins = earth = I have; everything I can hold on
wands = fire = I will; let there be (the wand of a magician); I got to the heart of matter fast like fire
swords = wind = I know; there's logical reason for everything
I know that it is but very simplified, I hold to that when I started with tarot, but till now I sometimes go back to it.
