Why don't you try searching the archives for "grounding". There have been many ideas regarding such before now.

Here's an excellent page about it: http://www.psipog.net/activepsy/book2.html#_Toc472931485
It's basically visualization mixed with meditation, you relax and 'see' roots going down into the earth or part of yourself firmly connected with the planet. It's easy to do once you get the hang of it and it works very well. The grounding, centering and shielding are all mentioned on that site, just keep scrolling down.
Me, I was taught to sit with eyes closed, relaxing everything from the feet up, then visualize my feet going down into the ground like roots, or my hand sinking down deep to touch the Earth's core. It always is accompanied by a surge of energy when I reach the right level.

Hey TarotGirlJess!
I can see how that would work well, for both you and me.
I think we'll have to coordinate a time and see what we can do working together, just to have someone else to bounce ideas off of.
E-mail me, and we'll see what we see!

I'm happy that you brought this up, because I have been thinking about this myself, and thanks for the link :)
To ground myself - I have to spend time by myself for a couple of minutes with the cards - and I find that works well. Another way of grounding myself - is to clean - I cannot tolerate any kind of mess if I am reading. For some reason, cleaning makes me feel more fresh and focused on readings - That might sound weird but it works for me :)

Hi TarotGirlJess,
I do an exercise very much like the one that HudsonGray has described.
This exercise is good but a little long to do after every tarot reading or when I need grounding during the day. It's a good meditation exercise though.
I sit quietly, take a few cleansing deep breaths in and out to calm my mind, then I imagine I can feel soil beneath me. It's cold and slightly damp - you can imagine rock too if you like. Then, keeping my breathing very deep and even I imagine myself putting down roots. Imagine the roots going deeper and deeper through the different levels of the Earth till they come to an energy scource.
You should be very relaxed by now.
As you breathe, start to imagine that you're drawing up the Earth's energy.
I actually visualise each chakra spinning and opening as the energy passes through them.
When you've finished, visualise the energy gradually leaving your body and returning to the Earth.
If you need to ground yourself quickly, try putting your hands on the floor but instead of wood or carpet there imagine you can feel moist, clean, soil. Actually feel the coldness of it, smell the earthy smell - make contact with the Earth.
If you need to ground yourself very quickly because you feel panicy or something try putting a little salt in the middle of your tongue. Salt is very grounding.
Hope that helps.
Love
Sulis xx

HudsonGray that is the way I find to ground myself also and thank you to Sulis also as I did not know that about salt.

a great way to ground yourself is to dig a hole, jump in and then fill the beauty up! You aint going nowhere that u shouldnt then ;)
if that doesnt help the there is a stone called Agate (think thats the right one) which helps u stay grounded - incase u cant picture moss and roots in ur head! :D
hope it helps

I often read for others, so I tend to ground myself and the client with a nice cup of tea/coffee. :D
Afterwards, I tend to eat something, because I've been talking and conversing with the client for maybe a good two hours, and need something to replenish my flagging energy.

I use tea or coffee to help ground myself. Tea has been use for a long time for this purpose. I use sandle wood or potala incenses to this end. They have been used to clear the mind and center perception. Nag Champa incense is widely used for the same purpose.--Tao

I try to relax and let go of eveything & clear my mind. At first it was hard
but after a while it just comes natural. I only do this before my readings because I know the client wants all attention about them. If my
mind is not clear, then the reading is still about me.
Once I was having a bad time & was uneasy. Nothing serious, just having a bad day. I took some dirt in my hands and rubbed them together, thinking
like the coffee grounds, this will help. I can't remember if it really helped
but it took the edge off the day.

Hematite is a good grounding stone to hold in your hand, too. That comes as a polished stone so it feels nice as well.
I've used the psi balls, it's an exercise to get you used to holding energy in your hands that you've called up. The practical use of it is to then put your hand on someone who needs healing energy & let the energy go into them. If they're not there in the room with you, just visualize them in front of you & you putting the energy into their hands to allow it to flow to them. Or you can give it to your pets, they're great energy sink holes & will take everything you give usually.

Yellow Topaz placed in the middle of the forehead is helpful. I agree with pets. I frequently read with one of my parrots on my wrist.

This is pretty much how I ground. I try to stay grounded all the time... as long as i'm awake. If I'm having a particularly upsetting day, I go hug a tree!!! it sounds silly... but it takes this visualization beyond visualization.. kinda cheating... but that tree creats a direct tap into Mama. just ask nicely first lol
Grounding can be frustrating at first, but with practice, you'll be able to ground and center in an instant!

I need to learn more about all my stones.
This gives me an idea for a grounding ring. I do jewelry.. so I tend to think along those lines.
Do you think that it would interfere in the reading if hematite was worn during?
Guess it's time for more research! lol

Hedgewytch, the tree idea is an awesome one, I do the same when I'm really really upset or stressed out.
I don't think hematite would interfere at all, I used to wear a hematite ring and necklace while doing readings and they seemed to come out fine.

Personally I have never had a problem whether reading for someone or being the querant wearing hematite.
