At the moment I am writing this post, the number is 957. And becoming a 4-digit community doesn't seems such a far thing...
I was wondering, wouldn't it be useful if we retrieved all those suggestions to save up space?
I know we now have a brand-new, flashy Forum, but I also believe we might have a bit of the job beforehand...
For example, I see that it has become an habit to quote entire messages... when it might be the same to use Meewah's Layout (he he... ;))
I am also thinking about something else... but I won't say it now, since it might sound exagerate and unfair...

Umm...
all the unfair things we could do...
*cancel registrations where new members don't ever post...
*Remove the chat forum
*limit the number of 'hello' replies in the new members forum
*stop people making one-line posts
*prevent all links in sigs, and all others unless sanctioned by solandia
any more horrid things we could do to save space?
;-)

malachite,
i doubt people would want chat removed. it gives a place to get to know each other better. that's the 'glue' that makes great friendships (in my opinion anyway) :)
*cancel registrations where new members don't ever post...
just cause they aren't posting doesn't mean they aren't reading the new posts. some people just don't feel confident enough, or have a desire to state their opinion.......but they still learn. :)
*limit the number of 'hello' replies in the new members forum
i think that saying hello to new people assists them in feeling like part of the group. i know that i joined a new forum about 6 months ago and i go soooo many welcomes. it made me feel so welcome. :) i loved it.
*stop people making one-line posts
forcing people to say more than a little bit - to me - would just take up more space.
*prevent all links in sigs, and all others unless sanctioned by solandia
solandia has asked us to keep our signatures short :)
but that's just my opinion.

Now wait a cotton-pickin' minute...j/k :D
I did some power lurking before I started to post. Even now, I don't do much posting, but I read and learn. This was why I joined.
That is all...

Fear not! I think Malachite was being sarcastic when he posted these suggestions... I giggled anyway :p
I think, as long as we all stick to Solandia's new guidelines, we'll be fine :)

(Speaking for the one line posting people;) )
Writing english without to many mistakes takes some time.( in my case anyway) So please let me reply with one line only:o

Pollux has a very good point - it is much easier to read threads where quoted responses are pruned or kept to a minimum.
And Malachite's suggestions would indeed be very effective. Fortunately disk space is not such an issue as with the previous forum software and we don't need to go to those extremes just yet :)

*Kiama breathes a sigh of relief* I feel happier in these new forums, cuz we don't have the weight of impending doom (aka running out of space) hanging over us.

MAybe I was just in my "Elder" Frenzy...
but now I'm puzzled...I don't want to be polemic, but why then do we need to shut polls down? :(
OK, I think that at any rate keeping signatures and quotations to a minimum is fine, also for those reading the posts (me at least :p).
Jade: Meewah's layout is what I am actually using right now in this sentence! :)
And, I was thinking that, once a year for example, we might have a sort of confirmation of our registration to Aeclectic. This would remind people that they are registered after all, and someone may decide to sign out because no longer interested... Just an idea, though... :)

What a great idea! There are often people who register for a forum and then find they can't be bothered, or they haven't got time, or it doesn't interest them anymore, so they don't ever come back! (I am one of these people with every other forum and mailing list other than Aeclectic!) A really good idea, Pollux! :* :* :*

Oh, nearly forg: If the keep-the-registration email thing does go ahead, it would be a goo id for the default to be if you want to stay you don't reply to the email, but if you want to un-register, then you reply... That way it wouldn't be so hard on Solandia's inbox, or organisation of who wants to be deleted, etc...

The problem with once a year registration would be if you kept not replying as default that you want to stay joined is a lot of people get tired of one email address so they get another one and not bother to unsubscribe to the forums or discussions they joined..They just let it go until there email runs out of space...I think you would need people to reply so you know..Even if you made a thread that way the email inbox will not get overloaded..Just my thought on the subject.

What we could do is when one of those emails goes out, have a link to a thread where we can post if we want to remain, or leave. Then only one email is sent, and after a deadline for responses is past, then that thread can be deleted.

(my pruned quote)
I had mentioned in another post about going through our own posts(not threads) and eliminating those that do not really hold any information. If we did then we REALLY would not have to worry about space.
I think a re-registration could work(not nec. every year). Maybe send out a little questionair, twice to those that don't respond within a certain time, just to give them a second chance (vacation, delete accidents, etc.) Reason for the questionair, those that are truely interested would respond,(have a 'are you a lurker Q')I feel like it's 'false advertising' to claim so many members when alot seem to never re-visit. I can't see some on joining 18 months ago making one post and then continue to visit and not have something to say somewhere at sometime.
How about dividing the active and the inactive? might that be a better idea?

sam,
this thread was over 2 months old and far in the depths of the archives. why did you bump it up just to say that we shouldn't respond to it anymore?
i see you were bored last night, bumping up a bunch of 2-4 month old threads.........pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease, we have soooo many current threads to answer and read every day, don't bring up old threads unless you need it for reference for someone (which i recommend posting the link to it instead and leaving it in archives) or if you need to respond to it.
in light,
jade

Jade: Is that why there are suddenly 8 pages of threads with new posts in just the last 18 hours? Yikes! I'm going to be here for three hours just reading them! :D
Sam, you little devil...are you just trying to reach Elder status? ;) }) :D

ok sam, deep breathe!!!
maybe i can help put this in perspective.
nobody wants you to quit posting altogether. i'm sure you just didn't realize, how difficult it makes it for us to find the new threads, when a whole bunch of old threads have been bumped up in a short period of time.

Sam, no need to get worked up.
but Jade did have a very valid point,(I failed to notice) It had been a couple of months and basically was a tucked away thread.
Your timing and words where somewhat of a contridiction. We don't want you to stop posting.
I think that maybe we need to realize/remember that you are one of our younger members, therefore the way you see and go about things is different.
I also sensed what Melvis sensed, you wanted to get to that elder status....I have a 12 year old son, I know just how you guys think....
Hey, what ever it takes right? and you got there, congrats to you sam......
