I have dreamed of an herb garden for years but never actually got to it. Only once I grew a basil plant. Well , 2 days a go For my daily tarot card I pulled the 8 of disks (From cosmic tribe tarot deck) . The card's title is "Prudence and Permission". It has beautiful vibrant pink, purple, orange , yellow-green colors . The picture is of a large lotus flower with 8 female hands coming out of it that hold 8 stems of newly bloomed flowers. The next day I just Knew it was time to plant! Maybe it was the tarot card , or the new moon in pisces, but something just told me that today was the day. I HAD to plant a garden! It was this really strong urge!
Well , this morning I went to Walmart. There I found everything I dreamed of and more! Got 2 "windowbox" type planters that fit perfectly where I want them when I got home . Two big bags of soil (I've never been so excited about dirt!!!) and 9 packets of seeds for herbs plus 2 flower seed packets. I also got free paper flyers with color pictures of every herb , plus growing tips and hints to make them into medicinal home remedies. Here's what I got :

Lemon balm, chamomile, Lavender , summer savory, curled parsley, sage, chives, Hyssop, and Thyme. For the flowers I got pansies. I wanted All the color packets , but settled on bright red , and mixed colors. Happy planting! I just hope the cat doesn't decide to make it her plaything , or destroy or eat them , or urinate in the planter pot. Why must cats do this?

Oh your garden is going to be just beautiful. I can just picture it.

I don't know why cats do this, but perhaps you can find out from a Cat-Lover Forum how to prevent this.

By the way, I have noticed that plants react remarkably well to Bach Flower Remedies. I always give them whatever I don't use in the bottle, or a bit of Rescue Remedy if they're looking poorly.

Umm...Diana, I thought the point of Flower remedies was that they were made OF flowers, not FOR them...
:)

On a cheaper note, sugar-water and breathing over their shoulders work...as does talking to them...

RE:Cats
If its possible, putting a fine chicken wire in a D over the bed can work, but its a bit of an eyesore...
Personally, I sometimes feel like a rifle would do the job...finding surprise gifts when digging and bedding with bare-hands can be VERY annoying....however, in deference to ethics and common-sense, I don;t reccomend it...

Still thinking of anti-cat thingies...

put small stakes in around the edge...like | | | |,
then put rusticky string round it, like |=|=|=|, up to maybe 4 inches, and it might just put the cat off bothering to go in in the first place...

came up with that just now, so it might need a bit of refining...

Here's 2 common household things that I heard work great as plant fertilizer. One is fish water . If you have a fish tank , when you clean it and change the water, add the gross old dirty fish water to houseplants. It has tons of natural fertilizer in it! Another is coffee. You know, when you make a pot of coffee in the morning and maybe don't drink it all . Just pour the coffee(after it has cooled of course) into the potted plants. These 2 things work better than expensive fertilizer! I wouldn't over-do it though . Use about once a month at most.

Sounds like you are on your way to a wonderful herb garden! I just got the best herb in the world tonight!! Chocolate mint! It smells just like a peppermint pattie. I don't know if it will be good for tea or anything..but the smell is great.
I also have in my herb garden:Green sage, white sage, spearmint, peppermint, chamomile, apple mint, lemon balm, catnip, lemon mint, orange mint, thyme, oregano, rosemary(2 kinds),dill, cinnamon basil, and now the fabulous chocolate mint!
I LOVE herbs. Still gotta add alot more to my collection.
good luck!

I'm a rather keen gardener myself. }> My garden started life as an herb garden. There aren't many activities that provide as much personal satisfaction as quickly as gardening. Purplelady you're in for a wonderful time with your herb garden! :D

My garden features on my Seven of Coins and Lovers cards for those with curiosity.

moonklad i also have chocolate mint! i bought it on a whim, who could resist a chocolate plant? :) i havent got the courage up yet to use it in tea, it smells yum!
mints are very picky when it comes to water i soon found out, they need to be moist all the time and ive had rust problems on my choclate mint and peppermint plants, any mint plant is better kept segregated from other plants as their roots will take over :)
