Since the original Trionfi were gaming cards, lets see what else you can do with the things!....
Anyone who knows a card game that a tarot deck could be used for, post it here!....
I'm voting for Donkey, or 'Burro', if you're multilingual!...
Take 16 cards, of four types...ie, 4 7s, 4 Pages, 4 Aces, and 4 10s....with a tarot deck, you could actually use only the court cards...
Shuffle the cards up, and deal four cards each to four players...
Don't show your cards to anyone!
All the players count to three together, and on three, pass one card to the player to their right...and repeat
The object is to get all four cards of one type...when you do, put your hand down on the table, and exclaim "Donkey", or "Burro", or any other word at all...
Everyone else must put their own hand down on top of yours as quickly as possible...the slowest player is the loser of that round...
however! *evil grin*....you don't have to be honest when you put your hand down....
Anyone know any other games?

Malachite:
You have given me a whole new quest for the evening (I'm sadly still waiting for two new decks to arrive from Amazon and could really use some severe silliness)!
I'm going to paste your instructions for the game (how 'bout an instructional video for those of us what have troubles with figuring it out? LOL) and wait for my S/O to get home.
We may have to arm wrestle over our choice odf decks. . . any suggestions?

Hey everyone,
there is a book (purchasable thru amazon.com) called Tarot Games. I have it and while some of the games are silly, it lists a bunch of specific games made for single, group and childplay that all require the tarot.
i own it, love it, have yet to try it... but i'm hoping to maybe start a tarot circle at some point where i can try some of these games out. btw, i love your suggestions and will be adding these games to my Tarot BoS soon. i have the rules for monopoly and a version of poker if anyone wishes to email me for them. (too long to post here)
blessed be,

I highly recommend this book! To give it's full title: Tarot Game - 45 Playful Ways to Explore Tarot Cards Together by Cait Johnson & Maura D. Shaw. ISBN 0-06-250964-0
Make this your next tarot book purchase and have loads of fun!

Malachite: I thought 'Donkey' was the one where you pass cards to each other, getting rid of any pairs of threes or fours of a number as you go. But, there's a 'donkey' card, usually the Joker, and if you get that, you have to pass it on quickly, cuz if you're left with it when the first person gets rid of all their cards, you're the Donkey! (Also called Old Maid, or La Poilleux)
The Tarot Games book is absolutely amazing! (Thanks Major Tom!!!!! :* :* :* :* :* ) And I am using some of the games from it for my Tarot course....
I've played normal card games with my Tarot cards, usually because I was on a long coach trip, and nobody had a deck of playing cards, but I always carried a deck of Tarot cards, so, out came the Majors, out came the Pages, and then, we played!

Kiama...that might be called donkey where you come from, but its something else here...can't remember what though...
for that one, you deal out all the cards to all the players...then you go round the table, putting down any pairs you have...the first person with out any pairs has to take a card from the player before them...
last player with cards loses...
we play it in the sixth-form room all the time..!

The New Games Treasury by Merilyn Simonds Mohr (ISBN 1-57630-058-7) is a terrific resource for all sorts of traditional games, and it's got a chapter specifically devoted to tarot cards, with three games: basic tarot, tarocco (Italian tarot) and French tarot. They're trick-taking games in the same vein as whist and bridge, but instead of scoring by the trick, you score based on melds, as in pinochle.
