A favorite song really depends on my mood of the moment and what's on my CD player, or who's on stage. I am fortunate to work in an environment where a variety of exceptional live acoustic music is performed by artists from around the eastern United States. A song may touch me deeply in some way, just for the time it's being played, and in that moment, become my favorite -- may even remain so for a while.
Within the last couple of days, I've discovered an Australian artist, Kasey Chambers, and have been playing her first album, "The Captain," over and over. She has a beautiful little tune on the CD called "This Flower," and it's most certainly my favorite song right now.
But still, in the long run... what's my most enduring favorite song? I guess I'd have to say there are two:
"Paperback Writer" (The Beatles) - I honestly feel this may be the "most perfect" pop song ever recorded.
"Sympathy for the Devil" (The Rolling Stones) - Topical, intense, smokin' -- with a lead guitar break that still sends chills down my spine.

That's so hard! Like Rosicrux said, they change with my moods!
A song I have listen to a million times never got sick of is "Le Femme D'Argent" by Air. It is a song that picks you up, makes you fly and leaves you floating in space...
Other favourite songs for this moment are:
"Gabriel" by Lamb,
"Sound Check (Gravity)" by Gorillaz
"I've Seen it All" by Bjork
The list could go on... I am in a quiet, late night mood and I think these songs reflect that...

adaggio for strings by samuel butler--it was the theme music from the movie "platoon" and just gives me chills
paschabels' canon--just a relaxing romantic piece

music from the opera carmen--particularly march of the toreadors
everything jewel does
everything john denver did
about everything the eagles did
the wall album by pink floyd
hell's bells by ACDC (the church bells at the beginning are so spooky)
loreena mckinnet
enya
yanni
kitaro
paul winter--his "december" album is my fav
susan ciani particularly the tune--the velocity of love
some tori amos
some madona
rod stewart's "i don't want to talk about it"--just makes me bawl
almost everything by the rolling stones but particularly "you can't always have have what you want" and "miss you"
sarah mclaughlin--another i haven't heard anything i disliked
city of angels--music from the movie
the theme song from the new star trek series Enterprize
bob segar
simon and garfunkle particularly "the sounds of silence", bridge over troubled water and "homeward bound"

As with others, my favorite songs differ with my mood but my all time favorite song is "Time" by Pink Floyd. For the past...I've lost count now..but many years on New Years Eve, where ever I am , I make sure that that is the first song I hear after the new year has come. It is a song that always makes me realize, hey..time is ticking away, better do all those things you want to do before its too late. I have made some major decisions in my life listening to that song: Deciding to get a divorce, deciding to go back to college, deciding to ask my now husband to marry me. That song makes me cry, it makes me smile. Its my favorite song.
blessings,
Moon

I like almost everything. From 50's-90's. Classical, Country, New Age, Metal, Old Rock, Rap...And all those other crazy categories that they made up. My thing is as long as it sound good and has a rhythm. What I hate is Cop killer crap or ganger stuff. You can burn it in my book. Well that's my 2 cents worth.

Wow, there are soooo many. Uh let's name some of my absolute favorites as of now (it changes as I hear more):
Brilliant Dance - Dashboard Confessional
The Ender Will Save Us All - also Dashboard
Is it Real? - The Seatbelts (from the anime Cowboy Bebop)
Goodnight Julia - also from Cowboy Bebop
Tank - once again, Cowboy Bebop.....the opening theme
Needs - Collective Soul
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins
Tonight, Tonight - Pumkins....you can't have "Mellon Collie" w/o Tonight immediatly following it
Nussun Dorma - Puccini
I would recomend to anyone who appreciates good orignal acoustic guitar and awsome lyrics to download or buy dashboard confessional. I would also severly recomend that anyone who likes jazz get a hold of the stuff from cowboy bebop because it is AWSOME! And it was all writen by the same woman and it's all very diverse writing...and I don't think there's much of it that is bad, either.
Love to you all,

there are a few songs that make my heart and soul go nuts, but at the moment i can only think of one...How to disappear completely by Radiohead...if you listen to this song with the volume turned up high (not high enough to annoy the neighbours though :) ) and your eyes closed you will feel as if the music is completely engulfing you...thats the closest i can get to describing it...Radiohead lovers will understand what i am getting at ;)

confusion... new order
a mass of songs by vnv nation:
--left behind
--solitary
--joy
--rubicon (the most important one!!!)
hurt/wish/something i never had... Nine Inch Nails
Anger... Skinny Puppy
um...yeah.
and I Believe... from the Run Lola Run soundtrack.
there's more and my mood always shifts but for now this seems like a good list. and yes, VNV is my most recent "favorite group".
blessed be,

Winds of Change-Scorpion
Gypsy-Fleetwood Mac (like all their music)
Dust in the Wind-Kansas

Anything by Rod Stewart (He is my favorite singer of all time!)
Father Figure-George Michael (song has a very personal meaning to me)

I have a hard time choosing a fav song. My music collection is, um, eclectic (or would that be "aeclectic??), ranging from rock to jazz to world beat to show tunes (current fav is the soundtrack from "Notre-Dame de Paris") to acid jazz/nujazz/chill-out lounge (but I'm so old I call it all acid jazz, even though that's frowned upon by the clubbers of the day).
Anyhoo....songs that I am pretty much guarenteed to turn up loudly include:
"Burning Down the House" - Talking Heads
"Enola Gay" - OMD
"Kashmir" - Led Zeppelin
"AM Radio" - Everclear
"I Will Follow" - U2
\and pretty much anything from Truby Trio
My sister reminded me that I was a rocker in my teenage years, but I grew up in Detroit area before New Wave 80's hit, so there wasn't much of a choice...:)

Hush> If you are still reading this thread - are you a fan of Serial Experiments LAIN?...
Caycia> I love Cowboy Bebop! Did you catch the movie?....
Oh dear, fave song...... Couldn't really commit to *one* song or group or even type of music! In general, I like it unpredicatable...
Stuff like Bjork, Tori, Tool is very sexy
Stravinsky when I'm eating meat with my hands or breaking something
DJ Food or John Cage or more 'cerebral' stuff for lying completely still and using up all my organic RAM
Rovo or Beck or Gamalan music gets me charged up
Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Radiohead sometimes Skinny Puppy make me cry about capitalism
Debussy/Sigur Ros etc w/eyes closed and consciousness waning
Yoko Kanno/Esthero chills the tension
J-Pop in the mornings with coffee
Cocteau Twins at dusk
Hafler Trio after midnight
Cripes, I'm sorry, I'm going to stop here before I make a complete list of my CD collection!!!

I have to share with you guys the lyrics to my favourite song of the moment. It's by a band called "Jimmy Eat World", the song's called "The Middle". I find it a really inspiring song when I'm down. I find the words really cut through to me.
hey
don't write yourself off yet
it's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
just try your best
try everything you can
and don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away
hey you know they're all the same
you know you're doing better on your own so don't buy in
live right now
just be yourself
it doesn't matter if that's good enough for someone else
it just takes some time
little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
everything everything will be just fine
everything everything will be all right
do your best
do everything you can
don't you worry what their bitter hearts are going to say
