Any suggestions for real good (historic) fantasy books?

Hi,

I am starving for a well-written fantasy book such as "The Copper Crown", the Pendragon-trilogy by St. Lawhead or the T. William's books.

Do you have any more suggestions (apart from M.Z. Bradley or D. Gabaldon)?

Thanks in advance.

i read a lot of scifi/fantasy type books but i'm not sure exactly what you are looking for. books by david brin are excellent and well written. he has a series on what he calls "uplift". it's where aliens visit a planet and help the inhabitant uplift to a higher level. in the one i'm reading now, the main character is working w/ uplifting dolphins. really pretty interesting. as far as historical fiction goes i like steven saylor's gordianus the finder mystery series. gordianus is basically a detective in ancient rome. lots of intrigue w/ historical figures and political intrigue. i like tanya huff's books but hers aren't as deep. they're kind of light, fluffy and funny. the one i'm reading now is called "summon the keeper". a keeper deals w/ ghosts and other metaphysical breaches between this world and the other side. the best character is the keeper's cat austin. austin talks and he has all the best lines. he is so funny!!!!!!! have you read any of marion zimmer bradley's books like the mists of avalon?

if i can think of any more i'll let you know.

my all time favorite series by Terry Goodkind: the sword of truth series, 6 books, here are the titles:
wizard's first rule
stone of tears
blood of the fold
temple of the winds
soul of the fire
faith of the fallen

Books by Morgan Llywelyn are very good, they are historic fiction setin the time of the druids, a few of her books are Red Branch, Lion of Ireland, and Druids

Circle of Stones by Anna Lee Waldo.

There are the 'Pern' series of books wrote by Anne McCaffrey. Basicaly science fiction, set in the future world of Pern, where Dragons and Dragon riders fight the thread that slowly kills the planet during the Pass (Can you tell I love these books lol) :)
Actually they are a good read, if you like this kind of fantasy/science fiction, but you have to read them in the right order or the books don't make sense. She also wrote other fantasy/science fiction books, not just one or two books but a whole series of them.

You've probably all read these books, but I'm gonna promote them for the 0.0001% of people who haven't!! (ummm - that would make it quite a small number for aeclectic LOL!!!)

The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The tale of Arthur and Camelot and Avalon, through the eyes of the prominent women of the times. Lots of preistessy-pagany things (although I would have liked more LOL).

Also 3 (?) other books follow on from it.

It's a great read - not too heavy, and not too frivolous either. Enough battles and ego for the chaps, and a bit of sex n magick for the ladies ;)

read it - now!!!

Set in this world I would recommend "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" and "Wicked" by Gregory MacGuire (sp?) They are both interesting new takes on those classic faery tales.

Another good re-take on faery is "Beauty" by Sheri S. Tepper. Or for a more erotic version of Sleeping Beauty try "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty" by Anne Rice, WARNING! not for the faint of heart! LOL })

A good Clan of the Cave Bear type set of books is by Piers Anthony. They are "Isle of Woman", "Shame of Man" and "Hope of Earth".

For good knight in shining armor fantasy, though not necessarily of this world, try: David & Leigh Eddings "Belgariad" Series or David Farland's "Runelords" Series. I highly recommend both.

Can you tell I read ALOT?
Rhiannon :)

Wow, that sounds great!

Oh if we are going the rewritten fairy tale route, let me suggest a book called Santa Steps Out, and I warn you this is really really REALLY not for the faint of heart, trust me here, dont let your kids read it ;)

The Anne Rice... Claiming of SLeeping Beauty there are 3 of them!

Dark is Rising Series Susan Cooper
Everworld series K. Applegate

I definately promote: The Mists of Avalon!

There are so many good books out there..

For anyone interested in a comedy/mystery

Janet Evanovich: One for the money
There are 7 in all right now..I am anxiously waiting for the 8th!
READ IN ORDER..They are much better that way!
