French presidential election

Hi guys,

I need to vent a bit. I am a French living in Finland and tonight was the first round of the french presidential election. President Chirac (right wing) gets around 19% and the second one is Jean-Marie LePen with around 18%. Well what is the problem, you might wonder ?

Well my dear friends, LePen is the worst fascist on earth, the guy is openly racist, anti-homo, anti-everything, his only politics is the HATE.

Usually, in french elections, like in most, you always end up with a guy from the right and a guy from the left. This time, for the first time ever in french history, this didn't happen. Tonight, France is about fascism.

MY HOME COUNTRY HAS CHOSEN A FASCIST UPON A DEMOCRAT !!!!!!!!!!!

Like most Frenchies tonight, I am shocked, terrified, angry and bloody ready to vote for Chirac (which I dislike very much) in two weeks !

Thanks for reading,

Karen

There seems to be a swing to the right in the world at the moment...the slightly righter of the two right parties in the US, Haider (sp?) in Austria, Berlesconi in Italy, and the absolutely not socialist government we have here in the UK.
Its kinda worrying...people never learn, do they?

Kissa: I thought of you yesterday. I've got French nationality (amongst others), and am devastated, but not too surprised. Ah, if only the real issues had been addressed seriously over the last twenty or thirty years or so - this would never have happened. I think it's too late now. If Chirac wins (may the Gods hear us), will this electoral message be strong enough for those in power to act upon? Unfortunately, I doubt it.

Let's pray that next time around, it won't be a battle between Le Pen and Mégret.

Could everyone on these forums please send out thoughts of peace, tolerance and love to all mankind. PLEASE!!

What has happened in France is an alarm signal which should be heard all over the world. The frequency is on "High Alert".

here the cabinet fell some days ago.
we have a new one now it seems, a combo of middle/right (2 parties) and a very right wing party.
this last one is also a worry, it's a new one and its tendence is going the same direction as what kissa described.
luckily those can't govern a whole country, but it is a worry.

Yesterday evening I was shocked but I thought "that's ok, the left electors will wake up and go voting next june so that we get a left winged assembly and it will be ok".

After a very short night, like most French people, I feel so down, hopeless and I don't see the point of all this anymore. Even if we get the assembly on the left, politicians will still ignore this MAJOR issue in many people's live : immigration/racism/misery/insecurity, this awful devil circle that enabled LePen to be where he is now.

With Jospin leaving politics, I also feel like socialists don't have a real leader anymore so it is not even sure that we can get a left winged assembly.

Yes, please send LOTS OF THOUGHTS OF PEACE, TOLERANCE & LOVE !!!

And most of all, wherever you are in the world, please remember to GO VOTING, ignore the bloody statistics that gave LePEn third so that Jospin's electors didn't bother to go voting, as they trusted the other ones to make it happen for them.

Ignore the statistics, vote with your head as well as your heart, BE RESPONSIBLE so that this shameful thing NEVER happens in your country, it feels so painful. Someone told yesterday on tv that "My France hurts" just like you can say "my head/feet/stomach hurts". Feels like that ...

I was also pretty shoked but ppl just recall history: That was pretty similar to how matters happened that Hitler and co. could gain political influence here in Germany.

Whenever ppl feel political depressed and have to suffer economical restrains they seem to cling to right winged groups.

Ppl do not seem to learn from history :( :( :(

Kimon  22 Apr 2002
Hello,

Catlin, yes, you are right, shockingly right, I didnt think about this historical parallel.
It is terrifying where the political world is going: USA, England, Denmark, Portugal, Austria, Italy, now maybe France and next maybe Germany - they all made a turn in the same direction. With France and Germany the European Union will change its course and go the same direction as US and UK.
I am very concerned.

Greetings,
Kimon

That is so true. The thing I heard was that young voters didn't worry so much about the label 'Fascist' being applied to a candidate as it doesn't mean the same to them as it did to people 30 years ago.

What do we need, another Second World War before people learn? Short-termism does not work, neither does once five-yearly voting in people to 'put everything right', then dumping them for another set when they somehow don't. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not dissing democracy. But we all need to take a more active hand if we want real change. I think our leaders do well keeping things the same, which is what they are elected to do. Real social 'progress' comes from activism, whether leafletting, marching or simply taking an interest.

Also, many of the right-wing leaders are frequently referred to as "extremely charismatic". I can think of another extremely charismatic leader. He had a mustache.

What worries me is how easily things could swing... people would never believe that we could have skinheads in jackboots marching on the streets, and folks being rounded up. But it could happen, in as quickly as five years, to paraphrase "night could fall across Europe again." That scares me.

Sorry to be so worked up, just this kinda touches a nerve :)

Cel

Oh, and send thoughts of peace and love too!! =^.^=

Yet another argument in favor of instant runoff voting

Kiama  23 Apr 2002
Um.... *Feeling ashamed to be British after reading Kimon's post.*

I was researching some of LePen's policies last night, and I must say the same thing as Kissa... This guy is nuts! I mean, he wants to change laws on abortion, and only let people who already have kids have a vote on whether it should be made illegal or not!! (Called a 'Family Vote', and the number of votes each person gets depend on how many kids they have.) This is dumb! I don't have kids, but believe me... I would vote to keep it legal, cuz maybe I don't want kids yet! And if abortion is illegal, an I get pregnant, that's my young life ruined... But, according to LePen, people without kids don't care about whether or not they can legally have an abortion. (??!!!) He is also thinking of scrapping the laws that prevent religious hatred... Bad news for everyone who isn't Christian! And his anti-gay attitude is really off-putting. Its as though everything that LePen isn't, is wrong!

This man is seriously mucked up.

Hello Kiama,

please, don't feel ashamed to be british!
You have a great country, a wonderful culture and fantastic people.
If you feel ashamed, everyone should feel ashamed about his country, because I don't think there is any country in the world whose leaders did not at least once manage to get their will done democratically, with the support of the mass/mob, and went down a dangerous or ignorant road.
Politics is a dirty job, everywhere! And nationalities have nothing to do with this!

Greetings,
Kimon
