House or Apartment?

We are trying to decide whether to get a house or apartment...With a house there is the obvious backyard, resale value tax credit....apartment you dont have to have a down payment...we dont have all of a down payment but we need to move...So the question is what to do? We can buy a house in Redford which is lower class and cheaper..Pretty safe not to bad of an area...To call my mom is long distance (my son likes to call her often) Not to mention all of the down payment...Getting everything turned on etc....Or wait and save up more money with having an apartment then try it again in a year....If we get an apartment I can live in Plymouth which is a bit more upper class within walking distance to almost everything and my son can call my mom whenever he wants...This all got started because my mom doesnt understand why I spent 330 on a correspondace course that will help me write better and get some articles and stories published plus another 20 for dictionary, thesaurus, vocab builder and antonymand synonym books (great buy at amazon.com) She thought it should go towards down payment or in her mind a washer when we move...Or I could of payed her extra money for water bill and her house taxes being 2 years behind...We do pay extra on water and her taxes have been behind for years whether we live with her or not...Obviously solving the problem is moving yes we have lived with her for 4 years longer then planned when we planned on moving about 1 year ago our car needed a new transmission so there went a huge chunk of downpayment money...So what do you think was it worth getting more of education on what makes me happy and probably getting an apartment because of it...compared to buying a house and not able to do anything to further my education?
And still the decision of house or apartment?

You might be able to get an education AND buy a house both! :) Go to the county clerk's office and ask for help looking into tax delinquent properties for sale. After so long a house/land/whatever gets repo'd for back taxes, it usually sits for 2 or 3 years (still lived in most times), then is put on an auction block. If you can get in there in that time period, find one that suits your needs that you can afford the back taxes on, and send a letter to the current owners, you might be able to get it cheap.

For example: in town here there's a house with about $600 back taxes on it. The owners aren't interested in paying that. My SO is offering to get a quick claim deed for the property and buy it from the owners for $50. This house (estimated market value is close to $75K, yard landscaped, really nice BTW) would be ours for less than $700. Which is less than a down payment, less than first/last/hookup fees for an apartment, and less than the cost of a semester's education. ;)
