The Gift is a movie written by Billy Bob Thorton, and directed by Sam Raimi....

has anyone out there seen it??? I highly reccommend it. It's about a woman who is psychic who "sees" a murder... .... I won't give away the story, but I wanted to say, it's great to see a very accurate portrayal of the experiences of someone in tune with their "gift."

if you haven't see it - go see it - and report back to this thread! haha. :)

if you have seen it.... tell me what you thought!

i have seen it. very intreging... directed by sam raimi (one of my faves and very much different than his noiaritary stuff). i loved the imagery and the fact that they really didn't up or downplay the psychic abilities too much. it was intreguing to try and place the era of this film because it had such a 70's feel to it and sorta of laid back approach but they mentioned some modern day references, so it was very hard to tell whether or not the story was based in the present day or earlier times.

i loved keanu reeve's performance as the redneck accused. i tend to not like his characters but this one was done very nicely.

there was just enough twists to the plot that it kept me guessing about who the killer was. i think i figured it out before the end, it's been awhile since i've seen it.

oh and the cards are NOT tarot cards, they're the ESP testing deck, which i thought her use of those for divination very interesting and appropriate symbolism. makes me wonder if those were the cards her character was tested with.

thanks for starting this thread.
blessed be,
.dc

Hi Joya,

I have seen The Gift several times and I agree with you and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who hasn't seen it

I found myself wishing they would make that into a series because I got the feeling her gift was growing in a different direction than she was accostumed too..

hey .dc, :)

yah, I forgot to mention that the cards she used were unfortunately not tarot cards. if they were the movie would have rocked that much more! .... as for Keanu Reeves... well, i do love the man... but (in my opinion) he still cannot act! haha. (btw, Matrix 2 is coming sooooon....)

the movie wasn't as fast-paced as most mystery/thrillers... but I dug it. Interesting... I didn't even think about the year the movie was set in.... It seemed like it could have been current day -- just in a really slow-moving, simple-minded western (or southern?) town... I dunno...

hey, did you see Frailty? (Sam Raimi gave it high reviews, along with Steven King) --- you'd like it.

btw, I liked how she could read into the flow of energy type things.... like the pencil dropping off the desk, or the dripping faucet...

The Gift is a great movie :D I really enjoyed it (and I think I need to add it to my DVD collection... :P) I think that Cate Blanchett (Aussie :D) was brilliant in this movie, as she has been in all her movies (Elizabeth, Lord of the Rings, Talented Mr Ripley to name a few...) The Gift website is really cool too...

Well, this movie kept me guessing right up until we found out who the killer was! (Duh!) But it felt really weird watching Keanu Reaves playing such a bad-guy character. This is the guy who started out as Ted in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure! (I LOVED THIS ONE! And their Bogus Journey!)

Anyway, a very good film. Go see it if you haven't!

Actually I saw the movie recently. I thought it was a Great Portrayal of someone with a Gift of that nature. I do believe it was meant to be in the South. Considering the looks of the trees swamps etc.. I would speculate , Louisiana. For those who think all Southerners are dense hicks... I feel Sorry for you . Evidently you have not had the pleasure of living in the South. Reguarless of your education or beliefs you neighbors will loan or give you a cup of Sugar; Jump start your car; watch your child; feed your dog, or do anything they can to help you . It was a very laid back type of town; unlike the uptight anal retentive North.
I did like the use of the ESP testing cards. Sometimes you just need something to focus on in order to pick up information. Not that the Tarot isn't a Great Help at times. But it can also be a hinderance too ! For instance if you are seeing something through your minds eye... but it doesn't register with the paticular card in front of you.... or you are unsure how that card relates to the info you are getting.
I must say that Keanu Reeves really surprised me. I am not use to seeing him in that type of roll. He is generally the good guy. I think he pulled it off rather well though. The woman that portrayed his wife looked familiar. I later realized she was the girl from Karate Kid II . Over all I liked the movie ; I have rented it a few times since... Anyone that is interested in the Clairvoyant should see it !!

Many Blessings
Kathy O

PS; I grew up in the south. I long for the day I can return. Not to say the North isn't nice, But I find Southerners to be alot more friendly and less negative.

Funny you mentioned this movie. Aside from the divination and psychic plays in the flick, I saw this on a plane to London. When there, I went to the Aussie/London Film Fest at Barbizon and had a glass of Shiraz with... Cate Blanchett! All by ourselves in the lounge before the showing I told her I watched The Gift on Brit. Airways. She began "playing" with the ESP cards shortly after shooting the flick and through concentration, she's "developed".

That's all I have to say about that.

I wanted to see that movie but somehow it was not so long here in the cinema and so I missed it, what a pity.
