who's golden rule?

i've often heard one particular group (which shall remain nameless :) ) claiming the golden rule as their sole propriety. if anyone has any others to add, please do! do not offend others as you would not want to be offended. buddhist udanavarga 5:18 in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you. for this sums up the law and the prophets. christian matthew 7:12 is there any rule that one should follow all of one's life? yes! the rule of the gentle goodness: that which we do not wish to be done to us, we do not do to others. confucianist analectas 15:23 everything you should do you will find in this: do nothing to others that would hurt you if it were done to you. hindu mahabarata 5:1517 ( really, really good read by the way!) none of you shall be true believers unless you wish for your brother the same that you wish for yourself islamic sunnatt what is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow creatures. this is the whole law; the rest is only commentary. jewish talmus shabbat 31 the successes of you neighbor and their losses will be to you as if they were your own. taoist t'ai-shang kan-ying p'ien

If you aren't prepared to take it, don't dish it out! (Basically, if you wouldn't like what you are giving somebody, don't give it! This doesn't apply to presents tho.) Kiama Ps- Then of course there's the Threefold Law of energy return, which is on a sideroad of this. It doesn't implicitly state that you should do unto others as you would be done by, but states that whatever you do will come back to you, threefold.

I really tried hard to find an Aurelian Meditation on this subject. But there aren't any. There are, however lots that say, if you're doing things right, you won't injure anyone anyway...

wise words. I only have one personal golden rule. and it's not very benevolent, but it's done me well. and that rule is 'Lighten up'. a few of my RL friends could do well to take it to heart. ;)
