First Names

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 20 May 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Phoenix  20 May 2002
I have notuiced here that some people use their first names, and others don't. I have also noticed that people call others by their first name, even when it isn't part of their name.

So my questions are: What is your first name??, and Do you prefer to be called by it, or your screen name??

As you can see, my screen name is Phoenix, but my real name is Darryn. I makes no difference what you call me. I have even answered to bitch on occasion(long story, don't ask LOL!!)

slinky_jo  20 May 2002
My real name is Catriona - not Jo at all! And my nick-name is Cat, which can get confusing, cos someone has that as their screen name her on the Forums!!

Slinky Jo - sounds like "Stinky Jim", who is a DJ on the student radio here in Auckland. He plays reggae and dub. I didn't purposely choose it, but when I was asked to pick a name when registering on the Forums, it just flew out of my fingers onto the keyboard and there it was on the screen! :D Stuck with it now! But I quite like my other nick-names I get called on this board - "Slinky", "Slink", "SJ", etc - makes me think of those slinky ring toys I had as a kid! Those were FUN!

RedWood  20 May 2002
My real name is Sherry...I answer to both..

cricket  20 May 2002
Mine's Kristal, but I've been known to answer to nearly anything.

DollChica  20 May 2002
I'm another Diana. Since there's another one already on the board, I started using the "DollChica" name.

Sam  21 May 2002
hi, i'm sam. you can call me sam or chunkypuffs.

floracove  21 May 2002
My given name is Ruth Virginia, a name that was picked for a paternal Aunt that never showed up and now it's mine, It's a good solid name, but I am called Ginger because when I was born my mother's sister came to the hospital took one look and said "Oh look at her hair, lets call her Ginger." So Ginger I am! And I NEVER answer to Bitch, when called that rarely, I tell them that concidering my brothers and sisters my mother may have raised a little hell, but never once did she ever raise a Bitch!

However; I do answer to Sweetheat, Darling and Honey!

Kiama  21 May 2002
My 'Christian' nameis Kimberley Jean. I answer to Kim, Kimberley (Altho hardly anybody calls me that upon fear of death :P ;) ) And I recently will answer to Kiama.

I will, hopefully, be meeting up with a few members of the forum next year during the Summer, but I am gonna get so mixed up! I really hope they don't mind me calling them by their Aeclectic names! I don't mind being called Kiama at all: In fact, I love it!

Kiama

kayne  21 May 2002
Hey! I'm Scott, pleased to meet you all... :P I think I prefer 'Kayne' on here, just 'cause I am so used to it and it is a little less mundane than Scott...

(And Kiama, I don't mind if you call me Kayne... after all it is a variation on my sirname and I get called Mr Cain everyday... :P)

catlin  21 May 2002
Ok, my "real" name is Nada but as this leads to confusion with Spanish speaking folk I choose "catlin" (why I choose this one pl read in the nickname thread some months ago) here and in some other forums.

You may also find me as "Santeria" at B & N courses, my querents know me as "Solitaire" (so you can find me under "solitaire-de" or "Solitaire de Lioncourt" in some other forums, too)

I have so grown accustomed to all these names that I do not mind which you will choose.

Ravenswing  21 May 2002
i guess you can figure mine out (perhaps i'm just not imaginative enough to come up with some nickname--LOL!!)

LVX
steve (in case you didn't figure it out)

Bings  21 May 2002
My real name is Dianne. I will answer to either Dianne or Bings. Those closest too me call me Di.

Dianne

Rhiannon  21 May 2002
My real life name is Lisa. I chose Rhiannon because I was going to name my youngest son that... until I found out he was a son. LOL I liked the name so much that I used it for myself. Now I'm very comfy with it and if somebody yelled it on the street I'd probably turn around.

Rhiannon :)

Bella  21 May 2002
My real name is Deirdre, but my family and oldest friends call me Dee (but never Dee-Dee, I hate that, sounds like a stripper's name to me!). I'll also answer to Bella, since I use it as a screen name and for my clients (and now my husband uses it too!). Of course, the name I hear most of all is "hey, mom!", since my daughter is always calling me for something! :)

shinta  21 May 2002
my real name is gerrett. although i'd love to be called by it more often, people who's only read my name usually mispronounce is. it's jeret :). but shinta would do.

rostie  21 May 2002
my first name is Sara, at home they call me saar or when i was younger saartje. (my hole 'first' name is sara bianca iris.)

sometimes they call me rostie (or rostiefrostie) because of my red hair (here they call you a 'rosten' if you have red hair, 'rostie' is sweeter), that's why i choose this nickname for here.

for me it's the same if you want to use sara or rostie, i like them both, but i love my first name though...

Jenny-Li  21 May 2002
Well, back in the year of grace and glory 1973, if you had a baby girl in this country you basically named her either Jenny or Linda. I'm a Jenny (obvioulsy), and since througout all 17 years I've spent in school (sounds impressing doesn't it) there were rarely less than 3 Jenny's in my class. I was usually Jenny L, but then some other kid with a last namn beginning with L showed up, then she became Jenny La and I became Jenny Li... So that's the namn I've had since kindergarten, when I came here I tried Jenny (of course) but it was already taken (of course...! I do seem to be the only active Jenny around - yeah?), so Jenny-Li it was!

Hey, I just answered the nick-name thread! Well, anyway: I use Jenny because that's my name. The only other name I answer to would be Linda, because that was my best friend's name all through school, and since there were 3 Jenny's and 3 Linda's in the class, all the teachers were completely confused all the time, and especially with Linda and me, who always turned up together, so both of us got used to answering by the other one's name... :D LOL :D

Lotta small talk here, but basically, Jenny or Jenny-Li is fine, but if you ever, EVER call me Jennifer, I shall never speak to any of you again!!! :TTOW

Light and love, and a big smile,
Jenny :)

Hm... Come to think of it - maybe that's posing the wrong kind of threat... *Finally, a way to shut her up! Hey: Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer...!!*

Big-mouth-Jenny :D

lunalafey  21 May 2002
SUZIE...simple...NOT..
my name is Suzanne, NOT Susan. I can't understand why, when I spell my name out to people, and even say it, do they insist on calling me susan. ICK..
it's not sue, susie, or susan..
it's suZanne. suZy suZie or even suZi....
using the first 3 letters of my last name with the S I have SMAX..in school we had to put names on everything we owned(boarding school)THAT'S 14 LETTERS..I reduced it to 4 and it has stuck ever since. If I'm too busy and don't hear you talking to me, a 'HEY SMAX' gets my attention right away.

Faerie Lin  21 May 2002
Mine's Linda, Lin for short :)

Mystick Dragon  21 May 2002
My real name is Sabrina, but my closest IRL friends call me Sabee. When I was little, I couldn't pronounce my name, so I called myself Sabee. That was about when I was three or four. The name stuck. Any of them's fine, but I find Dragon easier to type!

--Dragon

jema  21 May 2002
jeanette here - but there already was a jeanette on the board.

i live in the north of sweden and we have a funny accent up here and i doubt anyone could pronounce my name correctly (the way I think it should sound) but i don't mind too much.
it is jeanette with a singing whistling s sound in the beginning.

Probably not even me, 'cause I'm from Skåne! That's the south of Sweden - known for an accent very close to Danish, but even Danish people say people from Skåne speaks the most horrible and incomprehensible accent of Swedish...! *pout* lol

(Sorry for all my out-of-the-blue, silly and meaningless posts this evening - I think I'm going to drag myself off to the sack now, instead of bothering you guys to the verge of sanity... :D)

Light and love, and nighty-night,
Jenny :)

Morgeinne  21 May 2002
My real name is Meghan...I'll answer to pretty much anything.

*hugs*
Morgeinne

Mermaid  21 May 2002
My 'real' name's Rach or Rachel.
I chose to be Mermaid here because when I was a little kid I always kind of fancied being a mermaid when I grew up (you know, when your aunties ask you 'and what are you going to be when you grow up young lady?'). I figured this was as close as I was going to get! :)

Call me either, or invent something new for me ... it doesn't bother me that much!

Liliana  21 May 2002
My real name is Amber, been known to answer to Asshole too (even tho im not, its a term of affection in a particular group of friends) and by some people Mistress ;) Also there my craft name which I dont generally annouce, but if someone called me by it Id probably answer

Id answer to either on the street, Liliana is a character I play in a World of Darkness roleplaying game, so I hae to answer to it whenever I play. Id probably answer to Isis for the same reason :)

:THP

Malachite  22 May 2002
I'm Adam.

Nice and simple, no interesting stories...no middle names...no obscure pronunciations, no weird nicknames...

But, since it's Old Hebrew for Red, it does kinda go with my hair...

Diana  22 May 2002
Need I answer? Except to tell those who don't know that Diana is not a nickname.

If someone calls me Diane I will not answer. The "a" is absolutely essential.

When I was teenager hunting for my own identity, I told everyone my name was Jenny for a while. Drove my parents crazy.

Well, one can't really blame you...! :D ROFL :D

Diana is a beautiful name - I'm glad you decided to keep it!

Light and love,
Jenny :)

Hush  22 May 2002
well, my real name is Patrick. i always thought it was kinda dorky, but i like it now...shows my irish roots which i love :)

call me pat though....*eyes glaze over evily* i will personally castrate you with my teeth.

or postman pat! that drives me insane, though it was wonderful once when someone sang "postman patrick, postman patrick, postman patrick and his black and white cat........rick"

*giggles*

Maan  22 May 2002
Well my real name is Hanneke

I don't use it much on the net just fore the simple reason that i don't like the way "not dutch" people pronounce my name. It just doens't sound the same ;)

Somehow the a become's the e ;)

Love and light
Hanneke

Malachite  22 May 2002
so, how DO you pronounce it?...:)

destinyawaitsme  22 May 2002
My name is simply Lauren....that's what I answer to.

Although when I was 5 I wanted to change my name to something exotic.....for some reason I really liked the name Marthy Wilson...not martha...marthy...I don't even know where that name came from.

Emily  22 May 2002
I must be the exception lol, I've never given my real name out in any of the message boards I've used. I use my maiden name for email - Im quite a private person and although I spend many hours on this and other boards, I don't let it run over into real life and prefer to be known just by my nicks :)

Edited to say: I've just broken my own rule and posted my real name on here, that is a definite first for me lol :)

Phoenix  22 May 2002
Maan, is it either one of these??

like annika, or is the "H" pronounced, like "Hannika"???

I'm no expert on Dutch pronunciation, but I imagine that "Hanneke" would be pronounced by a Dutch person very similarly to the way "Hanukkah" would be pronounced by an American. Whereas most English speakers trying to prounce "Hanneke" would turn it into something like "HAN-i-kee" (with a short "a," as in "hand"), which would bug the hell out of me too. :) I myself have to endure all sorts of desecrations of my last name, which is German but which most people seem to think is Arabic, if they bother to think about it at all.

My given name is Keith, one of the more untranslatable names in the English-speaking world, as I've learned in the various foreign language classes I've taken, and I usually don't try to translate it. When I traveled to the Soviet Union in 1987, it got turned into "Kit" on my visa. Studying Chinese, desiring a name that meant something appropriate, I adopted the given name Leshui ("Zhizhe le shui, renzhe le shan").

Dragonfly  23 May 2002
Hi there my name is Julie

Sorceress_Jade  24 May 2002
IRL I go by Jess (short ofr Jessica) But online I'm known as Jade. However, Jade was WELL taken, by an elder actually, so I couldn't really get huffy about it could I? But all of my sn involve Jade in some form and so I chose one that seemed to relate the subject of this forum.

A bunch of pictures of my cards are actually located on a geocities site using this sn. which of course is http://www.geocities.com/sorceress_jade for anyone who didn't get that ;)

I prefer to be reffered to as Jade, but alas that would get confusing. Some people have called me SJ but then... Slinky_Jo is that too, so again it's confuzing. Sorceress Jade is fine, cause thats what I am, after all.

Fin

Cat  25 May 2002
I am Cat.
Short for Caitriona, like Slinky jo. Offline, It's also changed to Kate, Kitty, Tree and numerous other variations.
I got fed up of screen names, couldn't settle on just one, so I decided to just be me :)

Pollux  25 May 2002
I'm Valerio instead. There was a thread about name meanings a while ago... who knows... However mine means "he who gives (good) health" or something similar.

LILIANA!!!
It's only ME who can call you Mistress!!!
Don't go announcing that either, please!!!!

Maan  25 May 2002
You got close Geenius LOL

The H is pronounced and not like a G most americans make of it
Annika came close too but the E at the end is pronouced as well and not as an A
The letters KE are very usual at the end of a name in Holland aswel as JE but i have never heared a foreigner pronounce it correctly :(

I someone would like to try here are some dutch names for you:
Noortje
Geert ( a "soft" G , witch our language is famous or infamous for :) ) (Its is my brothers name)
janneke ( Nice)
Neeltje ( friend)
Maartje (friend )
etc

Enjoy LOL

And if you think those are too easy, try "Scheveningen" (the name of a Dutch town).
:D

When I was in Australia, someone told me that at the time of the Olympics, they had a contest on the radio to see who was able to pronounce the name of the Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband. I thought that was quite funny, but I wonder whether anyone won the contest... ;)

Phoenix  25 May 2002
I know all about the j's in Dutch, my Oma's maiden name is Langejan.

Phoenix  25 May 2002
Scheveningen

Phoenix  25 May 2002

Penetanguishene
Wikwemikong
M'Chigeeng
Sheshegwaning
Sheguiandah

Just so you know, they're native(Ojibewe to be exact)

Not quite... ;-)

The "ch" is pronounced much like the "ch" in "loch".
And the "ng" is pronounced much like the "ng" in "anger".

I'm not even going to try the town names you suggested... ;)

Phoenix  25 May 2002
Tarotlady, they're actually a lot easier that you may think.

Maan  26 May 2002
I really liked the olympics :) "PEETER VANDE HOOGIE BOOGIE " :)

O Phoenix you have dutch ancestors! Langejan is a common name arround here. I think i have one of your family members in my class!! ;)

Hmm those town name's aren't that difficult. There are now sounds that i can't pronounce. The only problem now is to combain them ;)

Phoenix  26 May 2002
Maan, I doubt it, My Oma only has one sibling, and I don't think he has kinds.

Melvis  26 May 2002
My real name is Melani, most people call me Mel, but I prefer Melvis online. It's a nickname given to me a long time ago, and I've always loved it!

Peace,

Melvis
:TSTRE

purplelady  26 May 2002
My first name is Alicia.

Adam (aleph-dalet-mem) means mankind, adamah (aleph-dalet-mem-heh) means earth. So did Adam mean red before the stupid Old Testament thing happened, is that how it works? I am enthralled, tell me... pleeeeze...

Phoenix: I had a professor who was Ojibwe, he was from the Sault Ste. Marie band in Ontario. The name of his town had more than 30 letters in it (seriously!), I can't remember it of course. Motorists kept stealing their town sign with the name on it :)

My name is Simone. The main thing I like about it is that it's pretty rare (albeit not in France I'm sure), so usually people remember it easily. This is helpful because my last name is Menier, which no one can pronounce... they can pronounce Courvoisier and Grand Marnier and Sidney Poitier, so I don't know why they can't say Menier... grrr... but anyway, the uniqueness of my first name means that I don't have to use my last name as much to identify myself. A strange thing is that French names seem to conjure up images of sultriness, savoir faire, femininity, etc. when people hear them, and I am a loud, blunt, deep-voiced woman. So sometimes I'm being introduced to some yutz and he says somethng dumb like "Ooh la la!" or maybe just "What a pretty name," and then I open my mouth, and hilarity ensues -- for me, internally, anyway. })
