I received my order from Tarot Totes today, containing some beautiful bags for a few decks that didn't have a "home" yet.
And even a bag for a deck that I haven't got yet... But hey, that's just another good excuse to quickly get that particular deck... :D

jade  24 May 2002
oh, i LOVE tarot bags!!!!! my mom makes them and i just love love love them.

in light,
jade

ps running off to get another bag too.....................

Faerie Lin  24 May 2002

Lin

wavebreaker  24 May 2002
Yes!! :P
I got three with celtic designs and the specially designed "rock & roll" bag for my rock & roll tarot.

Phoenix  24 May 2002
I think I might just order from Tarot Totes now!!!

Sam  24 May 2002
hey! that's great!

Faerie Lin  25 May 2002
Too cool! I should get me some fearie design ones.

Melvis  25 May 2002
I've seen you guys talk about Tarot Totes, but up until a few minutes ago I'd never visited the site...

OMG!!! There's so many bags and they're such a good price and their color-coordinated to go with certain decks! I know one thing I'm doing this weekend...making a list of all my "homeless" decks so I can buy bags for them!

Tarotlady_nl: I like your bag choices...I'll probably end up with those, too!

Whee! This is fun! :D

Peace,

Melvis

they have good bags, gives me a few ideas.
i make all my bags myself - by hand since i don't have a sewing machine. i wonder where they get their fabrics?

i loved the search-engine they had there!!

wavebreaker  25 May 2002
That's what I was wondering about too: where they get their fabrics. I suppose it's not too difficult to make one yourself (a friend of mine has a sewing machine and she already offered to make some for me), but to get all those beautiful fabrics...

I did make one myself though, I crocheted it, and I'm quite pleased with the result :D. Now if only I can find a shop that sells some nice silk to use for crochet...

(just to brag a bit)

as you can see - not too fancy fabrics.
but they are fun to make - almost like meditation just letting the needle do the work.

tarotlady, been looking at the totes site, they have indeed nice bags, your decks will be happy in their new homes.

jema-nice bags!!!I used to work in the fabrics section of a large hobby store. I have literally , tons of fabric! So now I sew all my own bags. I admit , I looked at all of tarottotes wonderful bags and tried to copy the design.( I have no clue how else to make a bag!) So mine basically look like that , same drawstring and all. Except I think mine are probubly not as perfect . It's the only thing I've ever learned to sew on the sewing machine also! I usually go to walmart for fabric! Have also gone to jo-anne's fabric and hancock fabric. Walmart also has a very good selection of drawstring chord. You can usually find a few celestial themes there, stars and planets, and sometimes something like trees. I've never been able to find wizards or dragons , I don't know where to find those.
As for the search engine at tarottotes, I know one thing, I cannot navigate the site At All with my msn browser! And it's the one I normally use. None of the links work! You know how the curser has a cool trail of stars? We Finally figured out that if I use internet explorer it works Fine! I have the same problum at other sites that use that fancy curser. I wonder if this is a problum for anyone else?

purplelady  25 May 2002
p.s. also , regular velvet is surprisingly easy to work with on a sewing machine. (The kind that comes on the Big roll on the wall at the fabric store) and it makes a beautiful tarot bag. I haven't tried the softer, lighter, stretchy "velour" type velvet yet . but I am about to make a bag out of soft black velvet for my new rock and roll tarot. It will be lined with deep purple satin-like liner. It was such a hard decision choosing a fabric for it!

wavebreaker  25 May 2002
Jema: those are beautiful bags!!
And I agree with you that making them can be like meditation, except that in my case it's the crochet hook instead of the needle. ;)

I just got back from a handicraft shop and bought some really nice thread. One of them has different shades of brown/orange and green in it, I'm going to use that one for a bag for my Osho Zen deck. I've also got one with black and gold and another one with lilac and silver.

jema  25 May 2002
hi,

i made a bag out of a silvery velour once.
since i do all stitching my hand, needle and thread and lots of patience etc... it is tricky, the stuff keeps gliding and slithering away all the time.
this is also why i stay away from silk.
i hope to be able to borrow a sewing maching this autumn though so i am gathering lots of fabrics and cutting it out and needling it all together sometime soon to prepare it all.

i have been thinking of making applications on them. as it is i only use some buttons or beads for decoration but perhaps making some kind of quilted application wouldn't be too difficult.

i got lucky with the drawstrings. a local fabrics-store closed down this winter and i few a few yards silky silver string.

Maan  25 May 2002

It was the chinese deck and the bag was specially made for the deck:)

Emily  26 May 2002
I've never been to the tarot totes site but I want to make a couple of bags for my favourite decks so I think I might go and get a few ideas :)

Maan  26 May 2002
Tarotlady
Your not living in a town THAT small. So stop teasing me! This is deadly serious ;)

You stept on my toe's ( trancelation of a dutch saying ;) :) :) )

wavebreaker  26 May 2002
Actually: I AM serious about the post office having been closed. I had to pick up the Tarot Totes package at the supermarket!!

But.... I'll see what I can do at the office on Monday... snail mail wise... :D

wavebreaker  26 May 2002
Just to brag a bit too... :D

This is the first one I made, as a test. I'm now using it for my Rider-Waite deck.

jema  26 May 2002
yay! those were pretty!
i never thought about crocheting a bag!
do you have a pattern you follow or do you just measure and crochet away?

i haven't done anything like that since i was in school and don't know if i remember even the basics. but i guess that once you get started one would remember it again?
*hopefull look*

wavebreaker  26 May 2002
No, I don't have a pattern, I just started and tried a few things. And started again and tried something else... ;)

I only learned the very basics in primary school and taught myself the rest later. There's not much to it really, you only need to know 3 or 4 stitches and then you can create your own patterns.
I'm sure there are books on it, with the basic stitches in it and some suggestions for patterns.

I also did a quick search on the internet and look what I've found: http://www.crochet.org/lessons/lessonr/lessonr.html (don't you just love the internet!!)

For my bags, I use alternate rows of single and double crochet.

Maan  26 May 2002
wauwie Tarotlady there Sooooo beautiful!!!

Oke i'm looking for my crocheting thinks to get started!!!

"hello decks, who would like a new bag ? " LOL

purplelady  26 May 2002
tarotlady_nl , thanks for the crochet lessons link! I love the internet , you can find AnyThing! I know there are many many many craft sites of all kinds with instructions for everything one could think of and some you haven't thought of.
I like the link you posted because the diagrams are Big and understandable. I have a lot of difficulty trying to understand the directions in a lot of books that are just abbreviated words, for things like knitting and sewing , I Need Pictures !
Here's a link I cannot resist posting , just for fun!
It's groovy 60's crocheting !
http://www.cei.net/~vchisam/groovy/accessories.html  .

wavebreaker  26 May 2002
Wow, purplelady, those are really grooooovy patterns!

Are there any tarot decks that go with these patterns? :D

Kiama  27 May 2002
Now, I'm useless at any type of knitting, sewing, crochet-ing, etc... But I really wanna try and make some bags! At the moment, I keep nearly all my decks (Apart from the ones I use) in their original boxes, but sometimes the boxes get a bit tattered... Since I want to keep my collection as 'new looking' as possible, I think some protection for my decks is in order! (I tried using little Jiffy bags, but my collection just looked ugly then....)

My Mum can sew and knit, so maybe I can coerce her into helping me out...

catlin  27 May 2002
Yes, 3 Jema-hand-made tarot bags :P :P :P

So the shop where I usually get my bags is already wondering what has happened. Imagine, a whole month has passed and I did not pop in there to leave with an armful of cute baggies for my decks (of course I did not spent a whole month without getting a new tarot deck ;) I just got the Jema-bags and found a sold-out of Indian and Chinese bags here in the city so I had no need to go to Heidelberg.

jema  27 May 2002
oh Catlin, i really need to send you a GOOD bag sometime, the ones you got were among the first i made and nothing fancy at all:-)

glad you liked them though!
i am sitting here trying to match up fabrics right now for a few new ones.

think i will give some fabrics to my mum to do some cross-stitching on. i need to find small but good patterns for the tarot-suits!!
like cups, pentacles and wands and swords.

wavebreaker  27 May 2002
Hey, how about a self-made tarot bag gallery?? ;)

Maalin  27 May 2002
Jema & tarotlady - I *love* your bags!!!

I'll try to put a picture of mine up tonight (I'm still at work :()

What a lovely thread!

faunabay  27 May 2002
I love making my own bags, but I'm debating whether to buy a few from tarot totes or not. (have in the past)
I've found some that I just love the fabric and don't have any similar stuff locally, so will probably go for it.
It's funny that jema mentioned making hers by hand. I have a sewing machine and have made all mine that way. But just within the last couple of days started thinking how fun it would be to sew one by hand. I couldn't do them all that way as I don't have that much patience LOL but I think it'd be fun to do at least one by hand.

jema  27 May 2002
by hand is the way to go:)
of course it takes a long time, but once you get started the needle sort of does the job without you thinking too much about it!
i don't recommend doing them my way though.
i have one heavier fabric on the inside to make the bag sturdy and then one flimsy and see-through on the outside for the pretty look - it does take some work and practice esp when it comes to cutting the fabrics.

i must say i like the idea of a gallery:)
would love to see more bags!

catlin  28 May 2002
Hi Jema,

Should you ever coem across a nice fabric with Celtic or Asian or Egyptian pattern on I'd LOVE to get one of your bags made out of such fabric as there are still some bagless decks in my book case.

wavebreaker  01 Jun 2002
I hope my Osho Zen deck will be happy in it... ;)

Maan  01 Jun 2002
O My Tarotlady it has turned out Beautiful!!!
It is sooooo pretty

I will never believe you again when you say that your not good with your hands ;)

And i think the Osho will be very happy in his/her new home!!!

kayne  02 Jun 2002
That is really fantastic TarotLady!!! :D:D:D The colours are perfect and it looks so warm and cosy - just the type of vibes the Osho Zen deck gives... :D

Maalin  15 Jun 2002
Right, I finally got around to getting a picture of my home-made bag. It's a scan of the actual bag rather than a photograph, so the colours are a bit strange, but I thought I post it anyway.

It's made from really dark navy blue velvet and lined with a beautiful two-tone purple-ish raw silk. The deck slides into the little pouch at the bottom and then the long bit wraps around the whole pack once and buttons closed at the side. I sewed it entirely by hand, but it only took a couple of days.

It's the first (and only) tarot bag I've ever made and I sort of made it up as I went a long, but it was good fun to make and it's nice to know that my special deck has a special bag to suit.

(PS I did a quick reading after I put the deck inside for the first time and got 4W and then 9C -I guess it's a compliment LOL!) :D

Rather than posting the link, it's posted my message twice instead. :(

I'll try again tomorrow....

VGimlet  15 Jun 2002
I am in awe of all of you crafty people who can work with fabric and yarn. I used to embroider a bit when I was young, but not well, ;).

I like Tarot Totes bags, but I also think it's even more special to have something personalized with beads or quilting or applique.
