So my sister's birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and I was perusing her Amazon wish list for gift ideas, and I came across the title "Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls." It looked quite interesting, despite apparently having been plugged on "Oprah." Has anyone else read it? Is it good?

Ooooh... that Oprah Stigma. Its like saying "I got the idea from Martha Stewart".
This book? I haven't read this... yet. My friend is reading it, digging it - although I usually steer clear from the girly-girl-power schtuff. I have read another Oprah-approved tome, The Poisonwood Bible and I actually enjoyed it. (hey, Steven Tyler is one of Oprah's Angels... ugh!)
Well GAW, I'm inspired to read and give you a book report if I weren't sooo into Henry Miller right now (just a little blatantly sexual yet poetic, eh?). I guess it reminds me of Paris. I say, go with your sister's intuit and get it. What I get from the reviews is that its a psycho-stat book of burgeoning women. And for me, being a would-be psychologist hoping to work with the adolecent population, I think I may read it (after I leave Montparnasse and the 20-cigarette breakfast, of course) 8)

What are "Oprah's Angels?" Sounds creepy... I work at a Borders and I have had it up to here with all these sheep thinking that because a book has Oprah's stupid stamp of approval on it, they have to buy it.... Think of all the mind-enriching these folks could be doing if they'd take the time to pick out their own books, based on their actual interests... Gosh, they could use their daily hour of Oprah to research books instead!

The counterargument is that if Oprah weren't recommending books, they wouldn't be reading at all. I confess to being ambivalent about the whole thing.

Oprah's Angels is basically a program that researches different groups and/or individuals that volunteer lots of time and money to the needy. The most dedicated individuals get a s*!%load of money and things they need to keep going and to support their cause. It's the one thing I ever liked about the show. 8)
On the flip side, I actually -bought- one or two of the Oprah recommended books at one time. They were rather unimpressive, or so says I. -_-
