What do you mean by 'Philosoph'? Cuz if its the Philosoy passe down thrugh people like Socrates, Plato, Hume, Descartes, etc, then there aren't very many American Pilosophers out there to write books...
But if you're talking about books such asThe Tao of Poh and the Te of Piglet, then that's a whole new Kettle of Philosophy...

God, I'm trying to grasp Descartes right now. I'm studying psychology and I'm learning that its such a blend of biology, philosophy and ethics.
Speaking of which I have to get back to writing a paper on the cognitive development of infants....

If the philosophy we're discussing relates to the study of ethics, epistemology, etc., I would nominate Oliver Wendell Holmes for his treatise, The Common Law.
Its a pretty well reasoned discussion of cultural ethics.

In fact, ANYTHING by Russel! As long as its not about the Ontological/Cosmological argument for the existence of God. Russel made a complete pratt of himself with this one!
January: Descrates is a pretty difficult guy to grasp. (Philosophically, not pyscally! })) Mostly due t he fact that he seemed to get a say in nearly all the major philosophcal arguments arond. His famous, 'Cogito Ergo Sum' (I think, therefore I am, or 'I am thinking, therefore I exist') is actually quite a sweeping statement, and does not stand up under proper evaluation.
Of course, to add some more Ethics Philosophy into this, although he's not American, Peter Singer is an amazing ethicst. He's Australian. Also, Peter Vardy... I think he's either English or American. Both are modern writers, and I think both are till alive. Peter Vardy's the guy to readfor anything to do with Religious Philosophy, or a round-up of Philsophical thoughts.
