Since we have so much negativity in the bad movie thread, I thought I'd balance it out by starting a BEST movie thread. SO what is YOUR all time favorite movie?
Mine would have to be Billy Madison. It is hysterical! I've seen it like 10 times, okay maybe 15, and I'm going to get it on DVD when I get Back from my trip to Cancun. (Don't worry, I'm not leaving 'til mid-August.)

I loved "Finding Forrester" , it was really great (not only because of Sean Connery).
I also enjoyed "Dance with Wolves" (hope this is the exact English title), "The fifth element", "Rob Roy" and "Legenden der Leidenschaft" (the movie with Bratt Pitt and Anthony Hopkins).

Yep, done my thinking now, and my vote goes to....
a French movie called Delicatessen, it's a really crazy story about a house in which nothing is quite normal, and where the "meat-store" (or whatever the right word is...:() in the ground floor has a bit of an odd way of supplying meat for their customers.
I also liked Boondock saints, despite all the violence, I think that movie is extremely well made, especially in the way its story is told.
More of a "mainstream" favourite: The president and Ms Wade! Michael Douglas speach in the end gets me every time! :D And I always think what if politicians were REALLY like this, all over the world... WOW! *lol*

I'm the type of person that loves movies and hardly comes across one that I don't like. Here's just a few:
Moulin Rouge and the new Romeo and Juliet (Baz Luhrmann is an incredible director)
Splash (you gotta admit that Daryll Hannah looked like a real mermaid :D)
Lilo and Stitch (I almost cried)
I was so obsessed with Titanic for a couple years (I went to so many Titanic exhibits after that movie) and I still like it...just not as much
Iron Monkey
But don't think I like Leo Dicrapio like that because I can really only say I respect his acting. *LOL*

First 4 got to be at the top! I'd just reverse the order :D
Gotta add Bogie and Bacall in "To Have and Have Not"

"Shirley Valentine" is good...
but I think "Educating Rita" is better... Julie Walters and Michael Caine. great casting

well, the original 3 star wars films will always be my fav. i am clueless how many times i have watched them. then there's raiders of the lost ark. it could have something to do w/ the crush i've had on harrison ford since around 1976.
most recently, it's been american beauty and a beautiful mind. russel crowe is awesome in "a beautiful mind". shoot! the whole movie is awesome! trust me, i know you all think it's about this boring math genius's life story but that's not it at all. i've never seen a movie that surprized me this much except sixth sense. another exceptional movie, btw.

Ayup. Forgot about Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Sixth Sense. Both great films. I also LOVE some of the old, old movies from the 20's. Their imagery is breathtaking and its fascinating watching a world gone by and still so influenced by the 19th century. I'm amazed at the sophistication of some of them, including some of the German films of that era.

I don't think there's such a thing as the best movie ever - best story, best acting, best effects,- most of us seem to have a list and probably change the order depending on our moods. However, this is my list (in no particular order), with lots left out :
High Noon
Tombstone
Jurassic Park
Twelve Angry Men
True Romance

I haven't read all posts yet, but I doubt this one was mentioned. Though I don't own it, i think my favorite movie would have to be Dead Poet's Society
Its a really good moralistic storey that's just... life. Has Robin williams, books, friendship, secrets, and young people learning to live.

My favourite at this moment (it changes all the time) is Dogma, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. I'ts just soooooo hilarious :D
Some other ones I love are; Phenomenon and another one with Matt Damon and Robin Williams (just love that man) but I forgot the name of the movie.
What Dreams May Come - Robin Williams
Sword Fish - John Travolta
Actually there are so many that I like, I love to watch a good movie.

It's a good job my wife is not a member (yet) as she would be in a right tizwaz after Maan's post. She too likes everything (and I mean everything) with Val Kilmer in it. We have a fair chunk of his repertoire on tape/DVD. Her favourite after Tombstone is probably Doors!

I came to think of another one: The Fisher King! Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams in a brilliant story of not getting stuck at appearance and surface, but see the truth behind all that... I wish I had that movie on tape, I'd probably go watch it right away!!

i wish i could share your enthusiasm about LTR, LL. i found it too long and at times irritatingly tedious. not to say it wasn't well done. acting and everything was well done. it just seemed to drag at times. but that's just my opinion. i plan to watch it again at home where i can stop it where i want if i get restless or need a break. i hope i'll have a different opinion at my second viewing. i did love harry potter. the action and story translated very well to film. but still not as good as "a beautiful mind" and "american beauty". oh yeah! another favorite is jimmy stewart in "it's a wonderful life". everytime i see that film i see a new layer of meaning. citizen kane is a masterpiece, too. even tho "gone w/ the wind" isn't my fav, it still has remarkable filming and acting. how could i forget cary grant in "arsenic and old lace"? what a hilarious film! casablanca, the maltese falcon...the list is endless of wonderful films out there.
to me, films today that have color and all these special effects don't take as much time to develop cinematography skills. in the old black and white film days, filmers had to develop skills w/ letting the images speak w/o telling every thing about the story to the viewer. i think citizen kane shows enormous filming skill. i was opposed to ted turner having all those old films colorized b/c the black and white made the films art. you can't really tell as much about the use of panning, shadow, fadeout and other techniques w/ color. but that's my soapbox.

Hi Truth,
I must say that i've read the books as well as seeing the film, and considering what a masterpiece they had to work with, they did a fantastic job.. I really don't think you could make that film without some awesome special effects. 30 years ago, it wouldn't have had the same impact.
I'm not really a fan of old movies, so having not seen 'Gone with the Wind' (don't faint with shock) i can't really comment. I did like HPotter, but not as much as LOTR (am a Charter Member of Fan Club too) *grins*.
Your other movie that I love and heartily agree with is a Beautiful Mind..I didn't go to flicks to see it, because i'd become rather prejudiced with reports of his arrogant behaviour during filming, so it put me off, but a friend lene me a pirate copy, and I lOVED it!! The man is a genius in acting, absolutely beleivable in every way. Made me cry too.

Grosse Point Blank is one of my absolute favourites, it's so weird and so crazy, the first time I saw it, it took me two hours to re-collect my chin after it dropped to my chest about two seconds into the movie....
And not to forget: Joan Cusack is in it, she is my favourite too! (Where's that "If-they-did-a-bio-pic-on-you,-who'd-play-you"-thread - forget my last reply, Joan is my obvious choice!)

three words:
WIZARD OF OZ
it was the first movie i ever saw (or at least sat through) and from the age of about 3 to 5 i *WAS* Dorothy. I even have a picture of me with the Easter bunny when i was about 4 with my name as Dorothy on the back, 'cuz that's what I told the lady who took the picture that's what my name was!! My dad was the tinman, my cat the lion, i had a stuffed dog as toto, and my mom was the scarecrow. She didn't like me calling her the scarecrow in public, so she made me a stuffed scarecrow... so she became the witch!! she shoulda seen that coming really...
Princess Bride, Labyrinth, & U2 Rattle & Hum are my other faves :)
